Jyoti and Haese, 2019, "The transition from face dissolution to wormhole formation in a heterogeneous limestone based on the distribution of local dissolution rates"

    No full text
The findings from the dataset presented here are described in the paper titled "The transition from face dissolution to wormhole formation in a heterogeneous limestone based on the distribution of local dissolution rates" by Apoorv Jyoti and Ralf. R. Haese from the Peter Cook Center for CCS Research at the University of Melbourne.A multicomponent reactive transport model at the pore-scale in combination with a flow-through experiment with intermittent high-resolution imaging of the pore network geometry is used to better understand the formation of dissolution patterns in porous limestone. The 3D images of the pore network were used for reactive-transport simulations to derive the distribution of local dissolution rates. The model was validated through the comparison of experimental and integrated calcite dissolution rates derived from simulations. The image-based change in pore geometry was limited to less than 3 mm from the inflow of acid due to the rapid acid neutralization from calcite dissolution. The dataset consists of three parts: 1) Raw image data from the micro-CT scanner, 2) Chemical analysis of the effluent presented in an excel file, 3) The three reactive transport models at T0, T2, and T4, consisting of the input files for COMSOL and PhreeqC

Why the New Film About the Gang Rape and Murder of Jyoti Singh Is Required Viewing

India’s Daughter, the BBC Storyville documentary made by Leslee Udwin, a British filmmaker and British Academy of Film and Television Arts award winner, memorializes this one particular case: focusing on Jyoti Singh’s life and death through interviews with her parents, her friend and tutor, one of the rapists, rapists’ families, and some administrative officials. Eschewing any generalizations, the documentary presents the events of that day sequentially as they unfolded for Singh and for the rapists, presenting the different voices directly and without any voiceover or narration. It also charts the protests that followed. Udwin has gone on record to say that as a rape survivor herself, this case had a special resonance for her because it was followed by an unprecedented public outcry against sexual violence

Jyoti and Haese, 2021, "Validation of a multicomponent reactive-transport model at pore scale based on the coupling of COMSOL and PhreeqC"

    No full text
The dataset contains the results used for validation of a reactive transport model at the pore scale using Comsol and PhreeqC described in the paper titled "Validation of a multicomponent reactive-transport model at pore scale based on the coupling of COMSOL and PhreeqC" authored by Apoorv Jyoti and Ralf R. Haese from the Peter Cook Center for CCS Research at the University of Melbourne. The dataset contains validation results of the presented model to previously published simulation and experimental results

The Opportunity Cost of Electricity Outages and Privatization of Substations in Nepal

The unreliability of electricity supplies is a major cause of the high cost of manufacturing in developing countries. In this paper, we are able to measure the cost imposed by power outages and suggest some feasible mitigating measures. The study employs a rich, if not unique, set of data from three large manufacturing enterprises in Nepal. Using it, the opportunity costs to the enterprises from lost production from electricity outages can be estimated accurately. Power outages due to substation failure can be separated from other electricity systems failures. An analysis is carried out on the feasibility of privatized electricity substations. We find that this is a very worthwhile capital investment for the private sector to undertake, even when additional generation capacity to improve overall electricity reliability is not justified.electricity supply, reliability, opportunity costs, privatization

Nava Jyoti: Farmer’s Pursuit of Profitable Sales

    No full text
Small and marginal farmers in India face several difficulties in selling produce due to their scale of production and related transaction costs. Aggregation of produce under the aegis of a producer organization is seen as a possible solution for improving market access. This case is about Nava Jyoti, a producer organization based in Odisha, India. Nava Jyoti received support from several institutions in the form of grants, soft loans and managerial handholding at the time of its inception. However, after a few years Nava Jyoti had incurred losses due to several internal and external factors affecting its sales operations. Building profitable sales operations was the key for farmers to stand on their own feet since grants and other institutional support would not flow indefinitely. The time had come to review the sales operations and take corrective steps, finding an optimal route to market strategy was the envisaged outcome of the review process. Solutions had to be relevant to the context and capabilities of Nava Jyoti’s members — small and marginal farmers in one of the poorest regions of the country. </jats:p
