Faculty members’ level of satisfaction of the institutional services of the university
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the level of satisfaction of the faculty members of Central Philippine University for the school year 2004-2005. It also hoped to determine relationships that exist between level of satisfaction and personal characteristics such as age, sex, civil status, religion, educational attainment, length of service and basic monthly income. The samples consisted of two hundred ten (210) randomly selected faculty coming from different departments of the university. Data were collected through a researcher-made questionnaire that were processed and analyzed through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software. Measures of central tendency such as mean and median were generated to describe the characteristics of the respondents. To determine level of satisfaction of faculty, Gamma and Chi-square measures were used and tested at 0.05 level of significance using two-tailed test. Result revealed that faculty members were mostly “satisfied” in areas of planning and implementation of policies; communication; roles and functions; supervisory consideration; and training, career, social and spiritual development but were only “slightly satisfied” of their physical working condition and remuneration and benefits. Over-all satisfaction result shows that faculty members of Central Philippine University were “satisfied”. Of the variables involved, only educational attainment and basic monthly income have inverse significant relationships with level of satisfaction.Includes bibliographical reference

Reflective learning and prospective teachers’ conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical communication skills
Journal articleThis is a quasi‐experimental study that explored the effects of reflective learning on prospective teachers’ conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical communication skills and the relationship of these variables. It involved 60 prospective teachers from two basic mathematics classes of an institution of higher learning. There were two treatments used in the study: the lecture‐discussion approach and reflective learning approach of teaching. The lecture‐discussion involved five phases: introduction, presentation, comprehension, monitoring, integration, and review and closure. The reflective learning approach involved initializing, exploring, and connecting processes. Validated and reliability‐tested researcher‐made tests on conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical communication skills served as the instruments. The study reveals that the scores of prospective teachers exposed to the reflective learning and the lecture‐discussion approach were below 50% of the perfect score before and even after intervention. It further shows that the prospective teachers’ conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem solving and mathematical communication skills significantly improved in the reflective learning group, and in the lecture‐discussion group. However, the mean gains of both groups are significantly different in favor of the reflective learning group in all the aforementioned skills except in critical thinking. Furthermore, the prospective teachers’ conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem solving, and mathematical communication skills were all found to be significantly related in the reflective learning group. However, in the lecture‐discussion group, only the following pairs were significantly related: conceptual understanding and mathematical communication skills; conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills; and problem solving and mathematical communication skills
Faculty members’ level of satisfaction on the institutional services of the university
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the level of satisfaction of the faculty members of Central Philippine University for the school year 2005-2006. It also hoped to determine relationships that exist between level of satisfaction and personal characteristics such as age, sex, civil status, religion, educational attainment, length of service and basic monthly income. It also sought to compare satisfaction level of faculty for school year 2004-2005 and school year 2005-2006. The sample consisted of two-hundred fifteen (215) randomly selected faculty coming from different colleges/departments of the university. Mean was used to describe the characteristics of the respondents. Pearson’s-r, Gamma, Chi-square and Z-test measures were used and tested at the 0.05 level of significance using two-tailed test. Results revealed that faculty members were mostly “satisfied” in all areas of faculty satisfaction in the university, namely: physical working condition; communication; planning and implementation of policies; roles and functions; supervisory consideration; training, career, social and spiritual development; and remuneration and benefits. Over-all satisfaction result shows that faculty members of Central Philippine University were “satisfied”. Of the variables involved, only educational attainment, basic monthly income and number of years of service have inverse significant relationships with level of satisfaction. Moreover, faculty members were more satisfied last year than this year.Includes bibliographical refence
Faculty members’ level of satisfaction on the institutional services of the university SY 2011-2012
Abstract only
Full text availableThis study was conducted to determine the level of satisfaction of the faculty members of Central Philippine University for the school year 2011-2012. It sought relationships that exist between level of satisfaction and personal characteristics such as age, religion, educational attainment, undergraduate course, length of service and basic monthly income. It also compared satisfaction level of faculty according to sex and civil status and determined whether there is significant difference in the satisfaction level of faculty for school years 2007-2008 and 2011-2012. The samples of this descriptive-relational one-shot survey consisted of one hundred ninety-eight (198) randomly selected faculty from different colleges / departments of the University. Results revealed that faculty members were “satisfied “with all the services rendered by the University. Also, faculty members were “satisfied’ with all the benefits classified as “pay for time not worked” and the services rendered to them by the different units in the University. Level of satisfaction is not significantly related with age, religion, educational attainment, basic monthly income and length of service while it is significantly related with undergraduate course. There is also no significant difference in the satisfaction level of faculty when they are classified according to sex and civil status. Moreover, there is a significant increase in the satisfaction level of faculty from school year 2007-2008 to school year 2011-2012.Includes bibliographical reference
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The effect of reflective journal writing to students’ critical thinking and mathematical communication skills
Research reportThe objective of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the effects of reflective journal writing to the students’ critical thinking and mathematical communication skills. There were two teaching strategies under investigation in this study: the lecture-discussion approach and the reflective journal writing approach. A total of 60 participants, 30 prospective teachers from two comparable classes underwent the two teaching approaches. The students’ critical thinking and mathematical communication skills were measured using researcher-made tests, which were content-validated and reliability tested. The lecture-discussion approach involved five phases: introduction, presentation, comprehension monitoring, integration, and review and closure. The reflective journal writing approach involved initializing, exploring, and connecting processes. Findings revealed that the performance of students in mathematical communication skills exposed to reflective journal writing approach was significantly higher than the performance of students exposed to the lecture-discussion approach. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the mean gain scores in critical thinking for both lecture-discussion and reflective journal writing groups.Central Philippine UniversityIncludes bibliographical reference
