No full textLaurent Joubert, "Traité du Ris, contenant son essance, ses causes et mervelheus effais", Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, 1579.From Plato and Aristotle, via Freud and Bergson, to neuroscience, laughter has sparked a variety of theories from some of the most important writers and thinkers: and it continues to raise many questions. In the long list of those fascinated by this mysterious phenomenon, a Renaissance humanist occupies an important and yet sometimes underestimated place. Laurent Joubert (1529-1583), chancellor of the University of Montpellier, was the advisor and personal physician of the future Henri IV. He also wrote a « Treatise on Laughter » (« Traité du Ris, contenant son essance, ses causes et mervelheus effais », Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, 1579, 375 p.) This book has been translated into various languages over the last few decades, but, surprisingly, has never been reissued in France since its first publication in the 16 th century. To make this treatise accessible to a wider audience, therefore, I intend to produce a critical edition of the work, with my translation of the text into modern French, supplemented with explanatory notes and critical apparatus.D'Aristote à Freud, ou de Platon aux neurosciences, en passant par Bergson et quelques autres auteurs majeurs, le rire a suscité bien des théories-et il continue de soulever bien des questions. Dans la longue liste de ceux que ce mystérieux phénomène a fascinés, un humaniste de la Renaissance occupe une place importante et pourtant parfois sous-estimée : Laurent Joubert (1529-1583), chancelier de l'université de Montpellier, fut le conseiller et médecin ordinaire du futur Henri IV et l'auteur d'un « Traité du Ris, contenant son essance, ses causes et mervelheus effais » (Paris, Nicolas Chesneau, 1579, 375 p.). Traduit en diverses langues au cours des dernières décennies, l'ouvrage n'a pourtant jamais été réédité en France depuis sa publication au XVI e siècle. Pour le rendre accessible à un plus large public, je me propose de le translater en français moderne et de l'accompagner d'un appareil critique
