Demographic Transition Environmental Concern and the Kuznets Curve
Get PDFIn an endogenous growth model with pollution and abatement we characterize the socially optimal solution. We find that the rate of growth depends negatively on the weight of environmental care in utility and positively on the population growth rate. We also find a trade-off between growth and environmental quality beyond which an environmental Kuznets curve is derived in the long term. This one emerges from the implications of the demographic transition for the rate of population growth, and the accompanying variation in the willingness to pay for environmental quality as the economy develops.Optimal Growth; Environment; Population Growth; Preferences

Ruiz Questell who has been a teacher in the public system for 29 consecutive years. He mentions the changes and impacts that social injustices and climatic changes have had on the system. He especially mentions the changes based on the tremors of 2020 and he also talks about the salary injustices that exist against the teachers at the heart of education.Esta entrevista trata sobre los cambios a la educación en los últimos años. Se discutió el tema con José A. Ruiz Questell, quien ha sido docente en el sistema público por 29 años consecutivos. Éste menciona los cambios e impactos que las injusticias sociales y los cambios climáticos han provocado en el sistema. Se enfoca en los cambios que surgieron a raíz de los temblores del 2020. The social welfare functions considered range from the Millian to the Benthamite. When population growth is endogenized, the associated optimal control problem involves an endogenous effective discount rate depending on past and current population growth rates, which makes preferences intertemporally dependent. We tackle this problem by using an appropriate maximum principle. Then we study the stationary solutions (balanced growth paths) and show the existence of two admissible solutions except in the Millian case. We prove that only one is optimal. Comparative statics and transitional dynamics are numerically derived in the general case
