An investigation into the efficacy of methods commonly employed by mix engineers to reduce frequency masking in the mixing of multitrack musical recordings
Studio engineers use a variety of techniques to reduce frequency masking between instruments when mixing multi-track musical recordings. This study evaluates the efficacy of three techniques, namely mirrored equalization, frequency spectrum sharing and stereo panning, against their variations to confirm the veracity of accepted practice. Mirrored equalisation involves boosting one instrument and cutting the other at the same frequency. Frequency spectrum sharing involves low pass filtering one instrument and high pass filtering the other. Panning involves placing two competing instruments at different pan positions. Test subjects used eight tools comprising a single unlabeled slider to reduce frequency masking in several two instrument scenarios. Satisfaction values were recorded. Results indicate subjects preferred using tools that panned both audio tracks
Plasma-Laser Wakefield Acceleration
Many texts detailing the derivations and science of Wakefield Acceleration are aimed at graduate and doctorate level scholars, and these may seem intimidating to new physics students. This paper is meant to be an introduction to the nature of plasmas, lasers, laser-plasma interactions, and Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA), with sources given where extra detail may be required. I recognize that this paper is not meant to be an all-encompassing review on the nature of the topics, as these topics are complex and subject of entire textbooks. Instead, I aim to provide an introduction to these topics to a college-level scholar beginning to study plasma particle acceleration

Profiling of Academically Successful and Unsuccessful Students on Music Technology and Production Degree Courses
Academics often have a “gut feeling” about which categories of students are successful or unsuccessful on their courses. Sometimes this is based on ad hoc anecdotal evidence, e.g. citing examples of a few strong or weak students, or sometimes based on back of the envelope analyses. It is not unusual to hear staff hypothesise that mature students do better/worse than 18 year olds or National Diploma entry students do better or worse than “A” level entry students. However, staff experiences with subgroups of students can be misleading and not representative of the true picture of the student cohort as a whole.
This project adopted a systematic approach to identify the characteristics of successful (awarded 1st or 2(i)) and unsuccessful (e.g. fail or withdrawn) types of students on a suite of Music Technology and Production degrees. It extracted data from the University’s Applicant and Student Information System and compared student’s entry profiles with the outcome of their studies.
Whilst the results are arguably specific to these particular Music Technology/Production courses, some interesting results were produced. For example, increasing UCAS points increased the percentage of successful students but it did not decrease the percentage of unsuccessful students as might have been expected

'Giving honour to the Spirit' : a critical analysis and evaluation of the doctrine of pneumatological union in the Trinitarian theology of Jonathan Edwards in dialogue with Karl Barth
The extent to which the 'honour' of the Spirit influenced the theology of
Jonathan Edwards is a hitherto underdeveloped theme. Against a backdrop of
Patristic thought and in dialogue with the theology of Karl Barth, evaluation is
made of pneumatological union in Edwards' Trinitarian theology as this centres
on the nature and inter-relatedness of the 'three unions' that characterize his
theology: the union of the three Persons of the Trinity, the union of the saints
with God, and the union of the divine and human natures of Christ.
Edwards' seeks to honour the Spirit as the mutual love of the Father for the Son
within his Augustinian, Lockean model of the immanent Trinity, and as 'Person'
in the economy. The challenges of doing so within the limits of this
psychological model of the Trinity are evaluated in dialogue with the
Cappadocian Fathers and Barth.
In a manner patterned after union in the Trinity, Edwards gave prominence to the
concept of the pneumatological union of the saints with God in Christ, in
fulfilment of the self-glorifying purpose of God in creation and redemption.
Edwards' experiential theology of conversion, and his elevation of subjective
sanctification by the Spirit over objective justification in Christ, for assurance, is
contrasted with Barth's greater emphases on the Christological union of God
with humanity and objective justification in Christ. Barth's more contemplative
approach is contrasted with the overly introspective spirituality of Edwards.
Edwards' view of the role of the Spirit in the hypostatic union of God with
humanity in Christ, which is reflective of the other unions, is also evaluated in
light of Patristic, Reformed-Puritan and Barthian thought on the nature of the
humanity Christ assumed, and the doctrine of the vicarious humanity of Christ. A
more emphatic incarnational emphasis may have saved Edwards' Spirit-
honouring spirituality from an anthropocentricity which is ironical given that the
glory of God is his ontic doxological concern

Intelligent Equalisation Principles and Techniques for Minimising Masking when Mixing the Extreme Modern Metal Genre.
The intensity, complexity and energy of performance, combined with the power and density of the tones involved are characteristics of the extreme metal genre. These characteristics present numerous problems when striving to achieve the clarity, definition and hyper-realism of performance required for this genres production. Avoiding masking in a mix is a fundamental
aspect of clarity, definition, intelligibility and perceived loudness and due to the fact that masking especially occurs in a dense mix, and is more pronounced in low frequencies, is particularly applicable to mixing the downtuned extreme metal genre. Masking in simple terms is the ability of frequencies of one sound to obscure or inhibit (i.e. mask) the frequencies of
another sound. This paper will draw upon the first author’s eight years of experience producing within the metal genre, including releases through Sony and Universal and working with the likes of Colin Richardson and Andy Sneap
Numerical and Experimental Studies of Wakefield Accelerators
This thesis is based on work done by the author on the development of laser wakefield accelerators.Wakefield acceleration in plasmas is a promising technique to provide the next generation of accelerating structures and particle beams. Plasmas can sustain electric fields that are many orders of magnitude stronger than those possible in conventional accelerators. Other benefits of wakefield accelerators are that electron beams produced inside the plasma can be generated with high peak current and ultra-low emittance.These strongly accelerating structures can reduce the size of particle accelerators, making them more available, for example in hospitals, or to increase the energy in particle colliders.In wakefield acceleration, a driver is used to excite a plasma wave.The acceleration of charged particles takes place in a plasma wave excited by, and co-propagating with, the driver. The driver can be a laser pulse or a bunch of charged particles.However, many technical challenges remain to be solved before a reliable particle source can be realized based on this technology.This thesis describes numerical studies performed using particle-in-cell simulations and experimental work using high-intensity laser pulses, with the aim of improving our knowledge on wakefield accelerators. The work presented here focuses on three different topics: trapping mechanisms, achieving higher electron energies and improvement of the betatron X-rays generated.In particular, trapping in a density down-ramp, ionization induced trapping, and trapping by colliding pulses have been investigated numerically and experimentally.A novel guidance technique for high-intensity laser pulses is suggested, the merging of two laser wakefields is experimentally demonstrated and suggested as a possible means of staging wakefield accelerators, and the possibility of carrying out a beam-driven plasma wakefield experiment is investigated through simulations. An improved X-ray source based on laser wakefield acceleration and enhancement of the betatron oscillations through direct laser acceleration is investigated and two applications are demonstrated
