    Polynomial methods in combinatorics

    No full text
This book explains some recent applications of the theory of polynomials and algebraic geometry to combinatorics and other areas of mathematics. One of the first results in this story is a short elegant solution of the Kakeya problem for finite fields, which was considered a deep and difficult problem in combinatorial geometry. The author also discusses in detail various problems in incidence geometry associated to Paul Erdős's famous distinct distances problem in the plane from the 1940s. The proof techniques are also connected to error-correcting codes, Fourier analysis, number theory, and differential geometry. Although the mathematics discussed in the book is deep and far-reaching, it should be accessible to first- and second-year graduate students and advanced undergraduates. The book contains approximately 100 exercises that further the reader's understanding of the main themes of the book. Some of the greatest advances in geometric combinatorics and harmonic analysis in recent years have been accomplished using the polynomial method. Larry Guth gives a readable and timely exposition of this important topic, which is destined to influence a variety of critical developments in combinatorics, harmonic analysis and other areas for many years to come. -Alex Iosevich, University of Rochester, author of "The Erdős Distance Problem" and "A View from the Top" It is extremely challenging to present a current (and still very active) research area in a manner that a good mathematics undergraduate would be able to grasp after a reasonable effort, but the author is quite successful in this task, and this would be a book of value to both undergraduates and graduates. -Terence Tao, University of California, Los Angeles, author of "An Epsilon of Room I, II" and "Hilbert's Fifth Problem and Related Topics"

Suzie Guth : Actuality of W. F. Whyte. Order and disorder in street district. The purpose of this text is to examine the position of W. F. Whyte, author of "Street corner society", in relation to the Chicago school, by consulting the author's written work and personal archives, in particular the handwritten work following his thesis examination, requested by the jury in 1942. The question is to understand why he refuted his adherence to this sociology and its concept of "social disorganization". The authors quoted by W. F. Whyte are confronted together with the analyses he made. The unilateral interpretation of social disorganization, the fear of stigmatizing those who live in slums, led W. F. Whyte to minimize the effects of social recomposition and to affirm the preeminence of solidarity in the street social order. Guth Suzie. particleShear: Discrete Python particle simulation with digital rheology and stress tensor evaluation

    No full text
particleShear: Python package for particle shear simulation This package provides a discrete particle simulation kit for having multiple spheres interacting. The spheres (i.e. 2D circles) interact by mutual elastic repulsion and tangential friction upon contact, but can also be crosslinked together. In addition to the elementary implementation of the interacting particles, it is also possible to define rheological experiments where the spheres are exposed to sinusoidally varying displacement conditions on the boundaries. We paid particular attention to avoid pitfalls that generate asymmetric stress tensors. Acknowledgement: Thanks from the author go to Fabien Bonini and Joé Brefie-Guth for package testing, and to Daniel Lyobenov for initial help with simulation setup. This repository archives the releases of the source code hosted at https://github.com/tbgitoo/particleShear. The package is available through the Python package server (see https://pypi.org/project/particleShear/1.0.2/). It can be installed automatically in python via pip3 install particleShear In some installations, the command may also be pip install particleShear; the minimal version of Python is 3.

Sharp Lp estimates for oscillatory integral operators of arbitrary signature

    No full text
The sharp range of Lp-estimates for the class of Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators is established in all dimensions under a general signature assumption on the phase. This simultaneously generalises earlier work of the authors and Guth, which treats the maximal signature case, and also work of Stein and Bourgain-Guth, which treats the minimal signature case

Egyptian Humour and Satire in Mona Prince’s The Life and Adventures of Professor M.

Although it may seem absurd, it is no exaggeration to say that humour is a very serious matter in Egypt, where dozens of intellectuals have analysed this phenomenon, often linking it to their national identity. This article presents various opinions on Egyptian satire to introduce a 2015 novel by Mona Prince, one of the Egyptian writers of the 1990s generation. In 2012, the author published a memoir of the January 25 Revolution. This study tries to explain the relationship between her political activism and her literary career; the role of humour in her œuvre; and how she deals with gender and religious issues in her 2015 work, which is also autobiographic. Moreover, since the novelist wrote the text between 2008 and 2014, this article offers some notes on satiric literature in pre- and post-2011 Egypt

    No full text
Al-Rawiyat (The Storytellers) is a metafictional novel written by Syrian author Maha Hasan in 2014. The text contains two intertwined levels: the first is the inner monologue of a woman who is writing a novel; the second is represented by the stories of the characters she creates and that become themselves storytellers. In this text Maha Hasan explores the art of storytelling through multiple stories and many female characters. Ḥasan’s storytellers often live in parallel and imaginary worlds, in a permanent state of metamorphosis and perpetual reincarnation. The stories they live and narrate represent their last attempt to preserve life in an inhuman time that changes at a spasmodic rhythm and generates simultaneous events with contradictory effects. This novel translates into fiction the rapid changes of the present period, which—as affirmed by Rosi Braidotti in her Metamorphoses—does not truncate the brutality of power relations, but at deeper view, intensifies them to their point of implosion
