    PERFECTIONISM: RESOURCE OF PATHOLOGY

    Get PDF
The main trait differing perfectionists from other individuals is high standards, which is the unifying feature in all models. No matter how well the theories and models of perfectionism are developed, there has always been disagreement about the nature of perfectionism – is it \u27The Good, the Bad or the Ugly?\u27 The paper aims to review the studies focused on the mechanisms behind perfectionistic representation, its threats to psychological wellbeing, caused by its pathological side, and look into perfectionism as a possible resource for personal growth and achievement. In the first section of the paper, the aetiology of perfectionism is viewed to see if the foundations add to the type of perfectionism formed. In the second section, models of perfectionism are discussed to see their ability to distinguish between adaptive and maladaptive perfections. Finally, in the third section, perfectionism\u27s positive and negative sides are discussed to understand when perfectionism becomes pathological and when it can be viewed as a resource. In the research of perfectionism, the quantitative approach is mostly used. However, the literature review provides the possibility to have an overview of current knowledge on the nature of perfectionism and to identify gaps in the existing research. The results show that although perfectionism may be viewed both as a positive and negative trait, its negative consequences prevail over its possible positive outcomes. Complex research involving several perfectionism measurements is needed to understand the impact of different combinations of perfectionism types on positive and negative outcomes. The findings of the literature review will serve as the theoretical background for studying perfectionism, its pathological traits, and its possible contribution to achievement

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERFECTIONISM AND HIGH INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES

Since the beginning of 1990s, when the first multidimensional concepts of perfectionism were published (see, Frost et al., 1990; Hewitt, & Flett, 1990, 1991) there has been a stable increase in the research of perfectionism and its relationships to wide variety of variables, for example, stress (Smith, Saklofske, Yan, & Sherry, 2017), personality traits (Cruce, Pashak, Handal, Munz, & Gfeller, 2012) coping strategies (Gnilka, McLaulin, Ashby, & Alle, 2017).  It has to be noted that perfectionism researchers have turned their attention to both general and clinical populations, as well as specific groups, for example, individuals with high intellectual abilities or gifted individuals (e.g., Kornblum, & Ainely, 2005; Margot, & Rinn, 2016). The paper aims to review the studies focused on relationship between perfectionism and high intellectual abilities, and to see what variables are involved in this relationship. In the first section of the paper concepts and definitions of high intellectual abilities are described. In the second section of the paper perfectionism concepts are described. An in the third section of the paper the relationship between high intellectual abilities and perfectionism is analysed. The results of literature review will serve as theoretical background for studying individuals with high intellectual ability and perfectionistic personality traits

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Respondenti aizpildīja demogrāfisko datu aptauju (vecums, dzimums, bērna vecums, vai dzīvo kopā ar bērnu un bērna māti), Subjektīvās labizjūtas skalu pieaugušajiem (Personal Wellbeing Index for Adults, The International Wellbeing Group, 2013, K.Pīrāgas tulkojums latviešu valodā, 2017) , Vecāku subjektīvās labizjūtas aptauju (The Subjective Well-Being of Parents, Ishii-Kuntz & Ihinger-Tallman, 1991, K.Pīrāgas tulkojums latviešu valodā, 2017) un Iesaistes bērna aprūpē aptauju (The Child Care Activities Scale, Cronenwett, Sampselle & Wilson, 1988, K.Pīrāgas tulkojums latviešu valodā, 2017). The aim of the research was to establish if there is a connection between well-being of new fathers and level of involvment in paternal care. There were 70 respondents participating in this study aged 20 – 43 with children younger than 2 years old. Participants answered to demographic data questions (age, sex, age of their children, living arrangements with mother of their child), Personal Wellbeing Index for Adults (The International Wellbeing Group, 2013), The Subjective Well-Being of Parents (Ishii-Kuntz & Ihinger-Tallman, 1991) and The Child Care Activities Scale (Cronenwett, Sampselle & Wilson, 1988). Results of the study revealed positive correlation between involvment in child care and well-being. Fathers with higher parental well-being had higher levels of involvment in play activities, as well as in direct and indirect childcare activities. Correlation between subjective well-being and involment in play activities was found. No differences were found between fathers with higher and lower level of childcare involvment

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
