Wilkinson, John Richard
John Wilkinson was born on June 30, 1878 in London, England to parents John and Mary Wilkinson. He was raised in England with sisters, Isabella, Mary and Jessie, and a brother, Thomas. In the early 1900s, John immigrated to Canada, making his home in Lethbridge, Alberta. At time of enlistment, he was employed as a porter.
On November 18, 1914, John Wilkinson enlisted with the 31st Battalion CEF. Pte Wilkinson arrived in England in June 1915, and remained in England until embarking for France on October 27, 1915. He would serve on the frontlines with the 31st Battalion for sixteen months, seeing action in many key battles.
On February 2, 1917, Pte Wilkinson received major supershell wounds to the entire right side of his body, fracturing his jaw and back. He also received gunshot wounds to the right thigh and arm. Pte Wilkinson was evacuated to England for treatment, but would never make a complete recovery. In January 1919, John Wilkinson was discharged from military service. He would never return to Canada, choosing to make his home in Epsom with his wife, May, whom he had married in 1918. In February 1925, John Wilkinson passed away, and was laid to rest in a common, unmarked grave in Epsom Cemetery. He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal for his wartime service

Critic, painter, and poet Claude Wilkinson is a Memphis, Tennessee native. His books of poetry include Joy in the Morning (2004) and Reading the Earth (1998). His work has appeared in African American Review, Arkansas Quarterly, Atlanta Review, Georgetown Review, and numerous other publications. He has been recognized with the Whiting Writers\u27 Award and two Pushcart Prize nominations, among other honors. As a visual artist, Wilkinson\u27s paintings have been exhibited in numerous invitational, juried, and solo shows. In 2000, he became the first poet to serve as the John and Renée Grisham Visiting Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi.
