La tragedia "radicale" di John Webster - John Webster: vita e opere - Le fonti di "The White Devil"
The White Devil è il primo dramma autonomo di John Webster e una delle più importanti opere del teatro giacomiano.
Questa nuova edizione del dramma presenta l’opera al pubblico italiano in una veste più moderna e accessibile, dal momento che l’ultima traduzione italiana pubblicata, quella di Aldo Camerino, risale al 1944.
Il volume contiene anche il saggio «La tragedia “radicale” di John Webster», di Mariaelisa Dimino, in cui l’autrice offre una personale interpretazione critica del testo basata sulle più recenti tendenze critiche anglosassoni.
Il saggio analizza il testo drammatico con il metodo critico dei Cultural Studies, considerandolo come il prodotto materiale del proprio contesto culturale. In particolare, nel saggio si dimostra in che modo la struttura drammatica, la caratterizzazione dei personaggi e la scelta del setting italiano di The White Devil rechino il segno della tipica discontinuità dell’epoca giacomiana, frutto della problematica coesistenza di paradigmi culturali residuali ed emergenti. L’opera di Webster viene dunque presentata, sulla scia di un pionieristico studio di Jonathan Dollimore, come una tragedia “radicale”, in quanto portavoce di una costante e consapevole interrogazione delle strutture di potere e dei sistemi di conoscenza dominanti
Dairy cows welfare: Prof. John Webster in conversation with Clive Phillips
Clive Phillips was Australia's first Professor of Animal Welfare, at the University of Queensland, and has written widely on the welfare of farm, zoo and companion animals. In 2022-23 he conducted a series of recorded dialogues (Conversations With Clive) with senior animal welfare scientists and academic experts, including dairy cows welfare expert Prof. John Webster - Emeritus Professor at the University of Bristol.These dialogues are aimed at upskilling organizations concerned with farm animal welfare, helping them gain a more nuanced understanding of welfare issues from academics with deep knowledge of animal agriculture systems and direct experience of practices. Relevant academic publications and references are included at the end of the recording.Key topics of the 40-minutes conversation from April 2023: 1) Clive introduces John Webster. 2) Early research opportunities and interest in farm animal welfare. 3) The "5 Freedoms". 4) Metabolism, nutrition, and genetic selection of dairy cows. 5) Lameness. 6) Cold and heat stress. 7) Housing and grazing, and freedom of choice for cows. 8) Mastitis. 9) Electronic collars. 10) Calf/cow separation, calf pneumonia and corticosteriods. 11) Sexed semen and artificial insemination. 12) Final comments

John Webster (214973)
The "John Webster" was a wooden ferry of 134 gross tons. She was built at Morrisburg, New York in 1917. During the First World War, she was used as a carrier on the New York Barge Canal. In 1919, her name was changed to the "Lawrence." In 1922, the vessel was listed to the Sarnia and Port Huron Ferry Company. She was abandoned at Detroit, Michigan in October of 1934
