[EN] John Pawson is an architect born in a small town in the North of England in the middle of the 20th century. He is noted for spearheading the search for simplicity in his work, which leads him to address problems of light, materials and space. Pawson adopts minimalism as an attitude that has repercussions in his creations: the search for pure forms, precision in the use of materiality or simplicity with the omission of the non-essential. This character of the architect has been forged and evolved through the influence of the different personalities who have passed through his life and the events he has experienced. It is worth highlighting the rigid family discipline in which he grew up, his restlessness for travelling and his encounter with new cultures, such as the Japanese. Great references such as Mies, Le Corbusier and the designer Shiro Kuramata stand out among the main influences. This paper aims to analyse the role played by the Cistercian Order in forging Pawson's minimalist spirit. Its beliefs determine the author's way of thinking, and we will examine in depth, with examples, how they are translated into his works. In an era marked by constant changes regarding the paradigms that guide man and the world, architecture has, in the face of an unstable and temporary context, resisted the transformation of its essential values. The theme of the presented dissertation reflects on the importance of essence and its manifestation in the reduction of elements that configure a space, by praising the works of architect John Pawson and Architects Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus, since this learning process leads to a search for references and coinciding with a particular interest in this type of architecture, which is expressed in a sense of Minimum. Inserted in this context, it is noted that a minimalist incline architecture triggered by multifunctional spaces, articulated and reduced to the essential, has already been the subject of studies, for the most variable reasons and by some of the most influential architects such as Walter Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier , among others. Through the analysis of the case studies of John Pawson and, similarly to Aires Mateus, it is particularly interesting to understand the essence of the purification of the architectural object faced with the demands of its users

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
