Interview with Marie Conti, Dorothy Graham, and John Marocchi
Audio recording and transcript of Marie Conti, Dorothy Graham, and John Marocchi's 1984 interview with Lynne Bowen for the Coal Tyee History Project. Conti and Marocchi have Italian backgrounds, while Graham's family came to Vancouver Island from England. The group shares memories and stories about their lives in the coal mining community of Cumberland. They also give biographical information about various members of their families.https://library.viu.ca/libinfo/harmfullanguagestatementhttps://viuspace.viu.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/129/CoalTyeeContiScript1984.pdf?sequence=
La conspiration du prince de Conti (1755-1757)
John Woodbridge : The conspiracy of the prince de Conti (1715-1757).
In the summer of 1755, Pastor Paul Rabaut met secretly with the Prince de Conti to discuss means whereby the Prince could help improve the conditions of the Protestants in France. When Conti's own political influence over his cousin Louis XV began to falter, he attempted to lure the Protestants into a revolt against the King in the spring of 1756. The Protestants were to keep Conti's seditious proposal ' an inviolable secret '. This article explores the extent to which some Protestants entered into Conti's schemes and into those of William Pitt, the English Minister. It underscores the severity of the political crisis which Louis XV faced in the years 1755-1757.Woodbridge John. La conspiration du prince de Conti (1755-1757). In: Dix-huitième Siècle, n°17, 1985. The radical right in Europe, between slogans and voting behavior. IHS Political Science Series No. 123, July 2011
The paper analyzes the radical right‘s attitudes toward the EU focusing in particular on the level of congruence between the programmatic statements of the central office and the voting behavior of their MEPs. It shows that although radical right parties represent a source of opposition to the EU, within the EP they express their dissent making use of the rules of the game, voting with the opposition more than the other forces do, but voting almost as much with the majority. The party public office in the EP is inserted in the legislative process and even more collusive with the other parties of both sides of the political spectrum than the Eurosceptical rhetoric and statements of central office makes the public believe

"Il ‘fuoco giorgionesco’ da Angelo Conti a d’Annunzio"
The friendship between Gabriele d’Annunzio and Angelo Conti is particularly intense in the years 1894-1900, in the context of Venice. Both of them reflect about Venetian painters and especially Giorgione, whose picture they interpret as an expression of Venetian magnificent life. I analyze the meaning of the form fuoco giorgionesco, also used by Walter Pater in his well-known essay The School of Giorgione. I examine in particular Conti’s references to this text, in order to verify their accuracy. I put forward the hypothesis that, when Conti wrote the monograph Giorgione, his knowledge of the English author was incomplete and came largely from articles published in magazines, from conversations with friends, and from the translation into Italian of only short extracts. I argue that it was unlikely that Conti (and d’Annunzio) had read Pater’s whole work in English, which at the time was little known in Italy
The facilitative role of the extracellular matrix in the development of colorectal cancer liver metastases
We have investigated the hypothesis that a desmoplastic reaction (DR), characterised by the deposition of collagens I and III produced by activated stromal cells, offers Colorectal Cancer (CRC) liver metastases a growth and survival advantage. Immunohistochemical staining of liver specimens obtained at resection for CRC, demonstrated increased deposition of fibrillar collagens and alterations in collagen IV distribution within the tumour as part of a DR. In addition, the deposited fibrillar collagens were closely associated with increased numbers of activated hepatic stellate cells/myofibroblasts. Β1 integrins were highly expressed by both cancer and stromal cells throughout the tumour stroma. However, in poorly differentiated areas of the CRC metastases β1 integrins appeared to be down-regulated, with αv integrin (especially αbβ5) expression upregulated. Clonogenic (survival) and PARP cleavage (apoptosis) assays, showed that collagen I compared to collagen IV significantly increased the survival and reduced the rate of cellular apoptosis for CRC treated with chemotherapy (5-Fluorouracil). The adhesion and proliferation of CRC cells on collagens I and IV was significantly reduced in a dose dependent manner, after incubation with β1 integrin neutralising antibodies (5-10μg/ml), compared to IgG controls. In contrast, αvβ3 and αvβ5 neutralising antibodies (5-20μg.ml), had no influence on the CRC cell adhesion, but significantly reduced the rate of proliferation of the CRC cell lines on collagens, especially for the highly metastatic KM12SM cell line. These results support a role for the desmoplastic reaction in supporting CRC metastases, mediated via β1 and αv integrins. As CRC adopt a more aggressive malignant phenotype, matrix turnover reveals specific binding epitopes which upon ligation by αv integrins plays a key growth regulatory role.</p
Paradoxical solitude in the life, letters, and poetry of John Keats, 1814-1818
This thesis proposes two distinct but connected ideas: that John Keats’s idiom of friendship was haunted by “sequestered” longings and that he ultimately valued specific, one-on-one partnerships as a basis for his poetical character. The Introduction places the thesis within its critical context and outlines “paradoxical solitude,” a concept the poet expressed by joining a “kindred spirit” in a wilderness retreat in “O, Solitude.”
I begin by examining the evolving role of solitude in Keats’s literary predecessors (Chapter I). I then trace the development of ideas of creativity and solitude from his 1814-1815 verse, including his first association with a coterie and the influence of Wordsworth (Chapter II). Building on these findings, I explore the poet’s introduction to the Hunt circle in 1816, assessing his relationships with its members and their overstated roles in the production of Poems (Chapter III). I then discuss how Keats regarded the composition of Endymion in 1817 as a poetic “test,” specifically tailored to reinforce his identity as a solitary poet (Chapter IV).
I contend that Keats engaged in a dialogue of independence with Reynolds, adapted the theories of Hazlitt, and restlessly travelled throughout England as a means of rejecting the highly social periods of 1818 (Chapter V). I then consider the creative gains of his northern expedition with Brown in the summer of 1818. I argue that Keats exaggerated his development into a “post-Wordsworthian” poet, positioning himself outside both the coterie’s sphere and the reach of Blackwood’s criticism, and inspiring the theme of Hyperion (Chapter VI).
In closing, I analyze Keats’s advice to Shelley to be a selfish creator of his poetic identity. Only through paradoxical solitude, I argue, was Keats able to construct the poetic identity that led him to compose the poems on which his fame rests in the 1820 volume
