    One-for-all: towards universal domain translation with a single StyleGAN

    In this paper, we propose a novel translation model, UniTranslator, for transforming representations between visually distinct domains under conditions of limited training data and significant visual differences. The main idea behind our approach is leveraging the domain-neutral capabilities of CLIP as a bridging mechanism, while utilizing a separate module to extract abstract, domain-agnostic semantics from the embeddings of both the source and target realms. Fusing these abstract semantics with target-specific semantics results in a transformed embedding within the CLIP space. To bridge the gap between the disparate worlds of CLIP and StyleGAN, we introduce a new non-linear mapper, the CLIP2P mapper. Utilizing CLIP embeddings, this module is tailored to approximate the latent distribution in the StyleGAN's latent space, effectively acting as a connector between these two spaces. The proposed UniTranslator is versatile and capable of performing various tasks, including style mixing, stylization, and translations, even in visually challenging scenarios across different visual domains. Notably, UniTranslator generates high-quality translations that showcase domain relevance, diversity, and improved image quality. UniTranslator surpasses the performance of existing general-purpose models and performs well against specialized models in representative tasks. The source code and trained models will be released to the public.</p

    MultiBodySync: Multi-Body Segmentation and Motion Estimation via 3D Scan Synchronization

    We present MultiBodySync, a novel, end-to-end trainable multi-body motion segmentation and rigid registration framework for multiple input 3D point clouds. The two non-trivial challenges posed by this multi-scan multibody setting that we investigate are: (i) guaranteeing correspondence and segmentation consistency across multiple input point clouds capturing different spatial arrangements of bodies or body parts; and (ii) obtaining robust motion-based rigid body segmentation applicable to novel object categories. We propose an approach to address these issues that incorporates spectral synchronization into an iterative deep declarative network, so as to simultaneously recover consistent correspondences as well as motion segmentation. At the same time, by explicitly disentangling the correspondence and motion segmentation estimation modules, we achieve strong generalizability across different object categories. Our extensive evaluations demonstrate that our method is effective on various datasets ranging from rigid parts in articulated objects to individually moving objects in a 3D scene, be it single-view or full point clouds.     Application of biodegradable implants in pediatric orthopedics: shifting from absorbable polymers to biodegradable metals

    Over the past two decades, advances in pediatric orthopedics and closed reduction combined with percutaneous internal fixation techniques have led to significant growth in pediatric orthopedics surgery. Implants such as Kirschner-wires, cannulated screws and elastic stabilization intramedullary nails are commonly used in these procedures. However, traditional implants made of metal or inert materials are not absorbable, leading to complications that affect treatment outcomes. To address this issue, absorbable materials with excellent mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and controlled degradation rates have been developed and applied in clinical practice. These materials include absorbable polymers and biodegradable metals. This article provides a comprehensive summary of these resorbable materials from a clinician's perspective. In addition, an in-depth discussion of the feasibility of their clinical applications and related research in pediatric orthopedics is included. We found that the applications of absorbable implants in pediatric orthopedics are shifting from absorbable polymers to biodegradable metals and emphasize that the functional characteristics of resorbable materials must be coordinated and complementary to the treatment in pediatric orthopedics

    Unveiling Stimulation Secrets of Electrical Excitation of Neural Tissue Using a Circuit Probability Theory

    Electrical excitation of neural tissue has wide applications, but how electrical stimulation interacts with neural tissue remains to be elucidated. Here, we propose a new theory, named the Circuit-Probability theory, to reveal how this physical interaction happen. The relation between the electrical stimulation input and the neural response can be theoretically calculated. We show that many empirical models, including strength-duration relationship and linear-non-linear-Poisson model, can be theoretically explained, derived, and amended using our theory. Furthermore, this theory can explain the complex non-linear and resonant phenomena and fit in vivo experiment data. In this letter, we validated an entirely new framework to study electrical stimulation on neural tissue, which is to simulate voltage waveforms using a parallel RLC circuit first, and then calculate the excitation probability stochastically. © Copyright © 2020 Wang, Wang, Thow, Lee, Peh, Ng, He, Thakor and Lee.1

    Mutations in the cilia-centrosomal protein Retinitis Pigmentosa GTPase Regulator (RPGR) are a frequent cause of retinal degeneration. The RPGR gene undergoes complex alternative splicing and encodes multiple protein isoforms. To elucidate the function of major RPGR isoforms (RPGR 1-19 and RPGR ORF15), we have generated isoform-specific antibodies and examined their expression and localization in the retina. Using sucrose-gradient centrifugation, immunofluorescence and co-immunoprecipitation methods, we show that RPGR isoforms localize to distinct sub-cellular compartments in mammalian photoreceptors and associate with a number of cilia-centrosomal proteins. The RCC1-like domain of RPGR, which is present in all major RPGR isoforms, is sufficient to target it to the cilia and centrosomes in cultured cells. Our findings indicate that multiple isotypes of RPGR may perform overlapping yet somewhat distinct transport-related functions in photoreceptors

    Investigation of Lagrangian coherent structures in a wake-induced boundary layer transition

    The evolution of coherent structures in a flat plate boundary layer transition induced by the cylinder wake is investigated using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE), which characterizes the amount of stretching about the flow trajectory, is used to extract the Lagrangian coherent structures. It is revealed that secondary vortex is induced by the cylinder wake vortices in the near wall region,which would evolve into hairpin vortex as it convects downstream. The subsequent evolvement of the hairpin vortex, characterized by the regeneration of offspring hairpin vortex upstream of it, leads to the appearance of the hairpin packet and the boundary layer finally reaches a turbulent state
