Early Literacy Development in Mandarin-Speaking Children: The Role of Phonological Awareness, Rapid Naming and Spoken Language Skills
In Taiwan, many children grow up in a bilingual environment, namely Mandarin and Taiwanese. They learn Zhuyin Fuhao – a semi-syllabic transparent orthography – at the beginning of the first grade before learning traditional Chinese characters. However little is known about the acquisition of literacy in this complex context, especially about the role of phonological awareness (PA), rapid automatized naming (RAN) and other spoken language skills. This longitudinal study is the first systematic attempt to investigate the trajectory of literacy acquisition in Mandarin-speaking children and the impact of instruction in both Zhuyin Fuhao and character.
The study was carried out in Taipei. A sample of 92 children were tested in their first grade (mean age of 6;7), and then followed up a year later in their second grade. A comprehensive PA battery was designed to measure implicit and explicit PA of syllables, onset-rime, phonemes and tones. RAN, spoken language skills and literacy skills, including reading accuracy and comprehension in Zhuyin Fuhao and character were also measured, alongside non-verbal intelligence and children’s home languages.
It was found that the role of PA in early literacy development of Mandarin-speaking children in Taiwan varies as a function of the orthography system. PA was closely linked to ZF-related tasks and reading comprehension, but not character reading where it had no predictive role. On the other hand, graphological RAN was found to be a good predictor of reading performance in both scripts, both concurrently and longitudinally. Additionally, non-graphological RAN had a role in predicting lexical-related literacy skills. Lastly, all spoken language skills, except semantic fluency, were significantly associated with reading comprehension indicating that oral language competence contributes major variances in reading comprehension. Moreover, vocabulary and auditory memory were associated longitudinally with many CH-related tasks. However, the variance of ZF word reading or spelling could not be explained by any spoken language skills. Investigation of children with atypical development revealed that children with reading difficulties performed less well on RAN and PA tasks while children with speech difficulty performed less well on sub-syllabic PA, Zhuyin Fuhao literacy tasks and character recognition, but no differently to their peers on RAN and character reading accuracy and character knowledge in radical form or position. The theoretical, methodological and practical implications of these findings are discussed

The logistics demander, 3PL company and 4PL company are taken into consideration to analyze the optimal incentive level of 4PL company selects in this paper, and our conclusions present that it depends on the ratio of product of weight of the logistics activities and its factor coefficient and the optimal incentive level has a positive correlation with the weight of volume of logistics activities done by 3PL company. ? 2011 IEEE
INTERACTIVE MODELING OF 3D FACIAL EXPRESSIONS WITH HIERARCHICAL GAUSSIAN PROCESS LATENT VARIABLE MODELS
The natural expressions play an important role in the daily communication. The efficient and intuitive facial expression editing based on the limited constraints is desirable in the facial animation. In this paper, we present an interactive 3D facial expression editing system with the hierarchical Gaussian process latent variable model (HGPLVM). The hierarchical model incorporates the joint work of the local facial features to produce the natural expressions. To deal with the holistic expression modeling from the local constraints, the inverse mapping between the low-level feature nodes and the high-level facial region nodes is established by the RBF regression model in the latent space. A propagation algorithm is introduced to predict the holistic facial configurations. The experiments demonstrate the 3D facial expressions satisfying the user constraints can be produced efficiently.Computer Science, Artificial IntelligenceComputer Science, Information SystemsEngineering, Electrical & ElectronicCPCI-S(ISTP)

Design and analysis of integrated thermal protection system based on lightweight C/SiC pyramidal lattice core sandwich panel
Thermal protection system (TPS) plays the key role to successful development of hypersonic vehicles. Here, a novel structurally and thermally integrated thermal protection system (ITPS) based on the lightweight C/SiC pyramidal core lattice sandwich panel is proposed. This ITPS integrates advantages of low areal density and high temperature resistance up to 1600 degrees C. Heat transfer characteristics and compressive responses of the C/SiC sandwich panel are established in advance. The results demonstrate that filling alumina fibers in the pore significantly reduce the effective thermal conductivity from 2.45-4.83 W/m degrees C to no more than 0.7 W/m degrees C. The critical relative density is determinated for the failure models under aerodynamic pressure load. Meanwhile, an analysis procedure of the ITPS is exclusively established under typical aerodynamic heat flux and pressure load. With fulfillment of both temperature and mechanical constraints, minimum areal density is obtained. Compared with current metal corrugated core ITPS, the ITPS proposed here significantly raises the temperature limitation up to 1600 degrees C and reduces the areal density up to 35%, and is very promising for potential application in hypersonic vehicles. Unsupervised Image Matching Based on Manifold Alignment
This paper challenges the issue of automatic matching between two image sets with similar intrinsic structures and different appearances, especially when there is no prior correspondence. An unsupervised manifold alignment framework is proposed to establish correspondence between data sets by a mapping function in the mutual embedding space. We introduce a local similarity metric based on parameterized distance curves to represent the connection of one point with the rest of the manifold. A small set of valid feature pairs can be found without manual interactions by matching the distance curve of one manifold with the curve cluster of the other manifold. To avoid potential confusions in image matching, we propose an extended affine transformation to solve the nonrigid alignment in the embedding space. The comparatively tight alignments and the structure preservation can be obtained simultaneously. The point pairs with the minimum distance after alignment are viewed as the matchings. We apply manifold alignment to image set matching problems. The correspondence between image sets of different poses, illuminations, and identities can be established effectively by our approach.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000305188500016&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Computer Science, Artificial IntelligenceEngineering, Electrical & ElectronicSCI(E)PubMed9ARTICLE81658-16643
UV DYNAMICS OF CIS-STILBENE STUDIED BY ULTRAFAST ELECTRON DIFFRACTION
Stilbene is a prototype molecule for studying photoisomerization and photocyclization mechanisms which are pivotal to converting light into chemical and mechanical energy in nature. Despite multiple decades of research, the exact details of the photoisomerization of cis-stilbene into trans-stilbene and/or its cyclization into 4a,4b-dihydrophenanthrene (DHP) have remained a topic of debate. We have used mega-electronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) to capture and spatially resolve the photoexcitation dynamics with sub-angstrom resolution. At the SLAC MeV-UED beamline, cis-stilbene was optically pumped with 267 nm ultraviolet light with different pulse energy and probed with 3.7 MeV electrons. We compare our experimental difference-diffraction signals with Ab initio multiple spawning simulations (AIMS) for single-photon excitation dynamics and molecular dynamics simulation for two-photon excitation leading to ionization. We found that with 80uJ pulse energy, the single and two-photon excitation channels are comparable, while with 130uJ pulse energy the two-photon channel dominates. Our data and simulations revealed very different dynamics and end products in the one-photon and two-photon channels
