Chicano Art as Alternative Media: Its Influence on US Popular Culture (and Beyond)

    No full text
In 1972, Chicana/o artists held the first Día de los Muertos exhibits in the USA to publicly honor Mexican heritage in a majority Anglo-American society. Day of the Dead altar installations and art became mediums for publicly communicating about Latino identities and political struggles. Weaving together various elements of the US Latino experience -- including Roman Catholic, Indigenous, and Mestizo artistic and cultural traditions juxtaposed with aspects of US popular culture, US Day of the Dead celebrations assumed an ideological and political value that far transcended the holiday’s original religious meaning in Latin America. This celebration of the dead had unexpected appeal with non-Latinos, who felt that mainstream US culture lacked public opportunities to collectively remember and heal after the death of loved ones. Today, the holiday is a popular autumn ritual in schools, museums, community centers and commercial venues across the US. Through various communication flows (the mass media, tourism, commerce), Chicano artistic influences have not only proliferated across the USA, adding a new celebration to the holiday calendar, but have also migrated to Mexico and other parts of the globe.Published in The International Journal of the Arts in Society by Common Ground. On the Lebesgue constant for the Xu interpolation formula

    No full text
In the paper [Y. Xu, Lagrange interpolation on Chebyshev points of two variables, J. Approx. Theory 87 (1996), 220-238], the author introduced a set of Chebyshev-like points for polynomial interpolation (by a certain subspace of polynomials) in the square [-1,1]^2 , and derived a compact form of the corresponding Lagrange interpolation formula. In [L. Bos, M. Caliari, S. De Marchi, M. Vianello, A numerical study of the Xu polynomial interpolation formula in two variables, Computing 76 (2006), 311-324], we gave an efficient implementation of the Xu interpolation formula and we studied numerically its Lebesgue constant, giving evidence that it grows like O((log n)^2 ), n being the degree. The aim of the present paper is to provide an analytic proof to show that the Lebesgue constant does have this order of growth

Maintenance of belief bases is a big challenge in the design of intelligent agents. In particular, the belief merging area aims to define common beliefs and goals for a group of agents with distinct and possibly con- flicting individual goals, keeping their individual belief bases consistent and without excessive loss of information. In this context, some belief merging operators have been proposed in the recent decades, including the pioneers: majority and arbitration operators - which use, as a me- asure of change, the calculation of distance between bases considering one propositional symbol as the unit of distance. Most operators act on model sets, which can grow exponentially on the number of formulas described in the belief base. As alternative, synthetic operators can be used. In particular, the BPM operator (acronym of Bittencourt, Perrussel and Marchi) was proposed using the same idea of minimum measure, but acting on a minimal dual representation of the belief ba- ses, called prime normal forms, obtaining equivalent results. However, the demonstration such this operator respect the postulates established to guide belief merging processes remains open. Thus, the objective of this work was to demonstrate that this operator satisfies the merging postulates, which was done successfully using the definitions of prime implicants as an strategy for the demonstrations. Thus, the synthetic operator BPM becomes an interesting tool to obtain situations that deal with basic knowledge systems

The Graph Isomorphism Problem is one of the problems whose the computational complexity was not defined yet [Skiena 2008], so, an investigation of its complexity, and efficient algorithms, is still open. Thus, the objective of this study was to produce an algorithmic method to detect isomorphism between two graphs. Through modeling the graphs in propositional theories in the normal conjunctive form, and then applying a dual-transform algorithm to find an equivalent theory of reduced size in the normal disjunctive form, composed only of prime implicants. With the set of prime implicants, the next step was to count the number of models of this new reduced theory, whose objective is to categorize theories in families. These theories were categorized in the work of [Polya 1940] and [Bittencourt, Marchi e Padilha 2003], and both conclued that if two theories belong to the same families, they are therefore congruent. The motivation for this study comes from this property of congruence between theories. The result obtained was the development of an algorithm that is able to identify the isomorphism between two graphs. However, during the analysis some cases of non-isomorphism were mistakenly identified as isomorphs. These graphs apparently have a common characteristic, making the results, even if incorrect, promising. Therewith it is concluded that this work fulfilled the defined objectives, however, there is a need to investigate if the method in fact only fails for the set of graphs with the identified characteristic

    No full text
The article examines the new Italian regulation of collective and certification marks, implementing the EU directive 2015/2436. Under the new rules, collective marks guarantee that the marked goods are supplied by enterprises that adhere to a single membership and its statutory purposes; whereas certification marks guarantee that the marked goods comply with quality standards set up by a single independent owner. The author suggests that collective marks may be registered only by non-profit organizations, provided these organi-zations are not closed to actual membership, but open to the access of new members. In addition, the article investigates the meaning of the duty of neutrality of certification mark owners and suggests the need for a “strong certification” guarantee for this kind of mark. The paper explains the specific requirements of collective and certification marks, especially the need for the perception of their nature by the public. The article examines the peculiar rules on registration of geographical collective and certification marks

U članku se nastoji osvijetliti hvarsko podrijetlo inž. Eralda Markija (Marchi) kroz dostupne matične knjige (rođenih, umrlih, vjenčanih i stanje duša). Erald Marki was born in Hvar on August 14, 1876, with the full name Eraldo Candido Gvido Marchi, to his mother Margarita (née Novak) and father Andrea Marchi. The Marchi family was ever-present in Hvar throughout the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, primarily because its members were well-known entrepreneurs and designers-contractors (builders) of numerous houses in Hvar. It has not yet been determined when or which generation of the Marchi family settled in Split. It is also unclear exactly when he began using the phonetically adapted name and surname—Erald Marki—but it was certainly before the autumn of 1924, as he published his treatise Climatic Conditions of Dalmatia under the signature Prof. Eng. E. Marki. However, this was after 1920, when he was still referred to as Marchi during the founding of the Split Olympic Subcommittee. He completed elementary school and the Great Realka grammar school in Split, and later, in 1901, graduated from the Technical University in Graz. From 1912, he was a regular member of the Austrian Meteorological Society, and in Split, he was involved in numerous civic associations, such as the Mosor Hiking Society (HPD Mosor), the Labud Sailing Club (Y.c. Labud), and the Split Olympic Subcommittee. He was the director of the Split Auto Club (Auto Club Spalato), secretary of the Society of Engineers and Architects in the Kingdom of Dalmatia, and more. He was the conceptual originator of the idea and construction of the Marjan Meteorological Observatory in Split, where he served as its first director for five years, from its opening in 1926 until 1930. He was the author of numerous popular lectures, articles, short pieces, and scientific papers. Among meteorologists, his works remain relevant today, particularly Climatic Conditions of Dalmatia (1924), Meteorological Service on the Adriatic (1927), and Weather – A Practical Guide to Understanding and Predicting Weather Without Instruments (1955). He lived and worked in Split, but today’s Split has forgotten him, while in his native Hvar, he remains completely unknown. Did he deserve this

    No full text
The paper addresses the topic of in-work poverty from a legal point of view. The author argues that in addressing this issue a different approach must be adopted, focusing on the most vulnerable workers. Particular attention is paid to two factors underlying this phenomenon. Firstly, job quality, including both the kind of job a person is employed in and wage levels. To this respect, the paper focuses on wages, the application of art. 36 of the Constitution, the problems related to the implementation of this provision and the debate on the introduction of statutory minimum wage in Italy. Then, it is stressed the importance of increasing work intensity of household, through policies aimed at promoting female participation in the labour market, such as measures aimed at promoting an equitable redistribution of care responsibilities in the family
