    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Job satisfaction stability increases over time: meta-analysis and fifteen-year longitudinal study

    I investigate the stability of job satisfaction under the hypothesis that stability increases with employee age and work experience. This idea is tested via both meta-analytic evidence and a 15-year longitudinal data set with four waves of observation. The target phenomenon—i.e., the increase in job satisfaction stability across time—is specified as a moderator effect of age or tenure on the relationship between job satisfaction at time t and job satisfaction at time t + 1. Results indicate that job satisfaction stability increases with age and tenure at both the between-persons and within-persons levels of analysis. At the between-persons level of analysis, rank-order correlations for job satisfaction increase with age and job tenure in linear and nonlinear patterns, based on meta-analysis (Study 1). At the within-persons level of analysis, results suggest that the intra-individual lagged effect of early job satisfaction on later job satisfaction also increases with age and tenure (Study 2).     Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Pulse Switching Study on the HfZrO Ferroelectric Films With High Pressure Annealing

    Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HfZrO) thin-film ferroelectric materials have recently drawn considerable attention due to their attractive properties such as large bandgap (&gt; 5 eV), extreme thin thickness (&lt;= 10 nm), and good Si-compatibility. However, high crystallization temperature (600 degrees C-1000 degrees C) and relatively low remanent polarization (P-r) compared to conventional perovskite ferroelectric materials are not suitable for flexible energy related devices, and are insufficient to overcome the barriers of conventional ferroelectric memory. In this paper, we investigated the effect of high-pressure postmetallization annealing (HPPMA) on the ferroelectric properties of the HfZrO metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) devices. HfZrO MFM capacitors annealed at 450 degrees C/50 bar shows a P-r value of over 20 mu C/cm(2) which is very advanced P-r value. Based on the short-pulse switching technique, we quantitatively and systematically examined the improved characteristics of HfZrO prepared by HPPMA in terms of coercive field (E-c) and possibly involved interfacial capacitance (C-i).

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    This paper describes the formation of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and poly[(N-isopropylacrylamide)-r-((3-(methacryloylamino)propyl)-dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide)] (P(NIPAAm-r-MPDSAH)) films on a glass surface via surface-initiated, atom transfer radical polymerization as a cell-culture platform. The films of PNIPAAm with various thicknesses and of P(NIPAAm-r-MPDSAH) with various ratios of NIPAAm and MPDSAH are formed to investigate the behaviors of cell adhesion and detachment. In the case of the PNIPAAm-grafted glass surfaces, the optimal film thickness, achieving the effective control of both cell adhesion and detachment, is estimated to be 11-13 nm for NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells. The adhesion and detachment behaviors of NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells are further tuned by incorporating the hydrophilic and non-biofouling MPDSAH moiety into the PNIPAAm system. The cell adhesion and detachment are controlled best, when the ratio of NIPAAm and MPDSAH is 75:1 (NIPAAm:MPDSAH). (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
