The Time of Montage. A lecture in the form of a dialogue
In this lecture-conversation, Isabel de Naverán and Leire Vergara offer an array of readings, life experiences and descriptions of films in order to address the concept of montage as applied to contemporary choreography and curatorial work.Taking the description of several scenes as a point of departure, the authors propose an understanding of montage (both in exhibits and in choreography) based on a specific temporality in which peripheral elements and everyday life lend intention and meaning to the work. In this partially scripted conversation the authors exchange their perspectives on the white cube and the black box, and question some of the dynamics of those two mechanisms.The Time of Montage has been staged on three occasions. The first was in the Teatro Pradillo in Madrid, in the context of Laboratorio 987 (2013) organized by Chus Domínguez, Nilo Gallego and Silvia Zayas and the cycle of exhibits Form and Vouloir-dire curated by Leire Vergara in 2012 at the MUSAC (Museum of Contemporary Art of Castille and Leon), the second was in the Laboratorio 987 at MUSAC within the same initiative, and the third time in Sukaldea-Tabakalera in San Sebastián (2014) as part of the program Paracinema curated by Esperanza Collado. CASE STUDY: ZULUETA´S RAPTURE. Writtings from inside and outside the Academics on trial
The present text is divided into two parts: a presentation and a paper. First, in italics, I present what could be called “Case Study: Zulueta’s Rapture” and propose some reflections on its meaning within the framework of current university practices surrounding knowledge. Next to take the stand is the paper itself, the object of the trial, whose author proposes a political reading of the film Rapture (Arrebato in the original Spanish) by Iván Zulueta. History meets the Body. Re-enactment as a mode of architectural inquiry.
Although we normally think about ideas and discourses as disembodied entities, the truth is that tacit architectural concepts, specific ways of understanding history, time, and space, are inscribed into our built environments, and they can only be disentangled with the help of our own bodies, by performing actions within, in, and around buildings. This paper explores the use of re-enactments as a method for architectural historians, using Aldo and Hannie van Eyck’s own house as a case study. The researcher’s body informs the reflections and findings, from materiality to meaning, through the continuous and embedded experience of the space, a seventeenth century building were the Van Eycks lived from 1965, which was diligently remodelled by themselves into their treasured family home. Almost hidden from the street hustle, yet open to the outside, the place lights up as soon as the threshold is crossed. Both literally and metaphorically, the changes and additions to the building reveal their architectural thinking and ways of inhabiting. In the house, layers of temporality, materiality, everyday living and lived experience mingle with design solutions and worldviews affecting them. Hyun Jaemyeong’s Opera Chunhyang-Jeon: Ancient Traditions and Western Perspectives
abstract: ABSTRACT
Korea’s first opera Chunhyang Jeon was composed by Jaemyeong Hyun in 1948. Until that time, most Korean vocal music was sung by a few native traditional artists. Inspired by their work, composer Hyun combined elements from the ancient Pansori (epic poetic forms presented by a solo singer with drum) and Western music techniques to create his opera. Hyun also used the more vernacular Hangeul (Korean alphabet) for his libretto rather than the Chinese usually heard in Korean theatrical presentations. It might be noted that in that same year (1948), the first Western opera: Verdi’s La Traviata was performed in Seoul.
This study concerns the bringing together of Korean traditional idioms (in Pansori) and Western musical ideas (harmony, orchestration, etc.) to create what is now known as Chunhyang-jeon Opera. In this regard, the author will present a brief split-analysis of the older style and the more modern musical attributes of the combined style of traditional Korean music and European style opera. It is hoped that this study might provide the basis for a future opera course and guide for both disciplines.
This study will also show that the Pansori and its subsequent operatic treatment has historical, social and artistic elements. Some similarities and differences of both forms were noted here with regard to cultural sensitivities.
While Chunhyang-ga (older form) and Chunhyang-jeon (Hyun’s modern adaptation) have some musical similarities, the latter was not composed based on the former. Chunhyang-ga consists mainly of compound meter (6/8, 9/8, 12/8, 24/8), which is at the heart of Korean traditional music, while Chunhyang-jeon uses simple meter (2/4, 3/4, 4/4).
Identical words are not often used in the two works, but their libretti are of much significance. Chunhyang-ga had been traditionally handed down with Chinese characters, whereas Chunhyang-jeon constituted its libretto with more modern Korean words which were easily understood by the audience.
Pansori have been sung with traditional singing techniques, which demonstrate the flow of the melodic line found in the images of the words (as interpreted and improvised by the solo performer), while in opera, vocal music is primarily from a set of melodic and harmonic techniques.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Music 201
Putting the World to Work
This text is a translation of the recently published book’s Introduction by Cara New Daggett, The Birth of Energy: Fossil Fuels, Thermodynamics, and the Politics of Work (Durham, Duke University Press, 2019), where this author records how 19th-century cultural imaginaries (particularly those gestated in the British Isles) were deeply convulsed by the articulation of two specific phenomena: on one hand, the creation of a new fossil fuel-based industrial production regime (in particular the massive use of coal) and the increase in employee productivity (subject to the logic of relative capital plusvalia, i.e. the work intensification for each unit of time); on the other hand, the emergence of a new concept of energy around thermodynamic science , which legitimized productive imaginaries and fossil imperialism through the theological perception of nature as an infinite source of resources at the service of human material progress (Western).Original publication: "Introduction: Putting the World to Work," in The Birth of Energy, Cara Daggett, pp. 1-14. ResumenEn “Teoría de la Mujer Enferma” la autora Johanna Hedva (2018) pregunta ¿cómo se rompe la ventana de un banco con un ladrillo si no puedes salir de la cama?, para referirse a los modos de protesta y participación que son permitidos para las personas enfermas. En un mundo donde la protesta y la revolución se manifiestan en acciones públicas, ¿qué formas de revuelta y tácticas de resistencia son posibles para los cuerpos que no son físicamente capaces de situarse en la calle? Este artículo busca responder a esta pregunta proponiendo una revisión a nuestras prácticas de revuelta y revolución, lidiando con las implicaciones de lo que ambas excluyen. Basándome en materiales de mi investigación doctoral, la cual explora experiencias de mujeres con dolor cronificado, utilizo fotografías y extractos de una de las entrevistas realizadas durante el trabajo de campo, para proponer visualidades e imaginarios radicales que las personas enfermas o con discapacidad emplean cada día. En otras palabras, este artículo propone una reflexión de formas de revuelta y tácticas de resistencia tullidas para pensar en cómo se vive una revolución en horizontal.AbstractIn "Sick Woman Theory" author Johanna Hedva (2018) asks "how do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can't get out of bed?", to refer to the modes of protest and participation that are permissible for sick people. In a world where protest and revolution are manifested in public actions, what forms of revolt and tactics of resistance are possible for bodies that are physically unable to situate themselves in the street? This article seeks to answer this question by proposing a revision to our practices of revolt and revolution, grappling with the implications of what both exclude. Drawing on materials from my doctoral research, which explores the experiences of women with chronic pain, I use photographs and excerpts from one of the interviews conducted during fieldwork to propose radical visualities and imaginaries that sick or disabled people employ every day. In other words, this article proposes a reflection of forms of revolt and crippled resistance tactics to think about how a revolution is lived horizontally
Quantization for compact neural passage re-ranking
Passage re-ranking is a fundamental problem in information retrieval, which deals with reordering a small set of passages based on their relevancy to a query. It is a crucial component in various web information systems, such as search engines or question-answering systems. Modern approaches for building re-ranking systems rely on neural language models such as BERT, or its derivatives, to create dense indexes for the target document corpus. While such approaches bring significant performance gains compared to classical lexical re-rankers, they have the disadvantage of increased memory costs.A family of methods that can be used to reduce the memory footprint of a dense index is called vector quantization. Vector quantization algorithms usually rely on a combination of clustering and space manipulation operations to perform a lossy compression of the dense index at the expense of index performance. While vector quantization is widely used for first-stage retrieval, its use in the context of re-ranking is underexplored. To this end, this thesis evaluates the effectiveness of product quantization, a well-known vector quantization method, on single-vector dual-encoders, specifically TCT-ColBERT and Aggretriever. In addition to this, we show how linear interpolation of sparse scores can be leveraged to improve the performance of quantized dense indices with negligible costs to the memory footprint or speed. Last but not least, we propose WolfPQ, a learnable quantization method aimed at further improving quantization for re-ranking by bridging the gap between the objective functions used in training product quantization and re-ranking systems, respectively.Computer Scienc
The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works.
