Obraz postaci historycznych w trylogii rewolucyjnej Teodora Jeske-Choińskiego (na przykładzie Camille’a Desmoulinsa, Georgesa Dantona i Maximiliena Robespierre’a)

In the revolutionary trilogy, Jeske-Choiński uses historical figures to present the cruelties of the events of the end of the 18th century. For this reason, the fictional characters become a background for the actions of historical heroes, whose profiles, in turn, are presented by the author by means of suggesting their moral evaluation. Although it seems coherent – the characters are just as cruel as the world they live in – it makes the reader feel uneasy about the contrast between the historical facts and the characters in the novel. In this work, the representations of historical figures created by Jeske-Choiński will be compared with their real counterparts, described by historians

Learner characteristics predict performance and confidence in e-learning: an analysis of user behaviour and self-evaluation.

We examined the role of learner characteristics as predictors of four aspects of e-learning performance, including knowledge test performance, learning confidence, learning efficiency, and navigational effectiveness. We used both self-reports and log file records to compute the relevant statistics. Regression analyses showed that both need for cognition and serialist preference predicted test performance. Participants needed less time to complete the e-module when they had lower serialist and higher surface processing scores. Learners with higher deep strategy and need for cognition scores were more confident in their learning, whilst the reverse held true for learners who scored high on surface strategy use. Also, learners with higher surface strategy use showed less active navigation patterns. Age did not predict any outcome except performance efficiency. The results therefore support the importance of including self-reported learner characteristics and educational background in addition to log file information

AÇÃO E CONTEMPLAÇÃO: O ESTATUTO ONTOLÓGICO DA RAZÃO NO Lº XII DO DE TRINITATE DE AGOSTINHO

Abstract: In Lº XII to "De Trinitate," Augustine shows the two dimensions by which he understands the operation of human reason in time, they are: the action and contemplation. The first concerns the scientific knowledge and direct the created and the way in which man projects his actions amid them, while the second is the ratio of capacity to transcend the real and understand the meaning of Being in which it is based, that is, the "reason" in which things were created in a certain order, more precisely, its telos. Both are operations of a single human soul created in the time it operates seamlessly with the body activity of men. The integration between these two spheres of reality and the two dimensions of rationality becomes a challenge for the author because of original sin, designed here in the perspective of a "reductionism" of the operating capacity of reason on the real, which leads him to conceive a deep integration between epistemology and ethics, where intelligible and sensible are not two "separate realities", but two dimensions of the same reality created, whose telos depends on the correct integration of the two dimensions. Private international debt with risk of repudiation

    No full text
The risk of repudiation plays a central role in the size and nature of international capital flows. In this paper the author addresses the question of whether, in a world of international capital flows with risk of default, strategic externalities provide a rationale for regulation of international borrowing. The author models centralized arrangements of international debt in which only governments borrow and lend internationally and decentralized arrangements in which individuals have access to international markets. The author shows that a centralized setup allows more international risk sharing than a decentralized setup

A Paleoethnobotanical Comparison of Mortuary and Village Langford Tradition Sites in Northern Illinois

    No full text
Archaeologists working in northern Illinois have conducted research on Langford Tradition (ca AD 1100-1450) sites for more than a century. The last 40 years have seen increasing methodological sophistication providing for a relatively nuanced understanding of food technology and resource use. Paleoethnobotany has provided one way to observe the diversity of plant use among Langford site occupants. Using standard paleoethnobotanical practices, plant macroremain from the Robinson Reserve Site (11CK2) are analyzed. The results of the plant macroremain analysis are then compared to existing floral data from the Washington Irving Site (11K52). This research investigates whether site functionality is distinguishable between Langford tradition mortuary and village sites

Critical success factors for working in home office–an empirical analysis from the perspective of employers and employees

    No full text
Against the background of the Covid-19 pandemic, the home office has become widespread in Germany since 2020 and has since been used as a new working method by many employers. The use of home offices can have various positive and negative effects on employees and employers as well as society in general. In order to benefit from as many positive effects as possible, a good home office concept is required. The article shows which requirements exist for such a concept and which prerequisites are fundamentally associated with the use of home offices. From technical to social aspects, requirements of various types are considered, which have been formed by a study carried out by the author. The focus of this article should be the critical success factors for ideal work in the home office, i.e. the requirements that are decisive for the successful implementation of a home office concept and have an influence on the perceived effects of the home office. The author’s study listed in the article was carried out as part of Mr. Jeske’s thesis, on which the article is based

Equity home bias: Can information cost explain the puzzle?

    No full text
Most stock market investors believe that the ideal equity portfolio should be well diversified to lower overall portfolio risk. International financial markets offer a means for diversification, but most investors do not exploit this risk-sharing opportunity and instead hold large shares of their portfolios in domestic stocks-a tendency called home bias. ; To measure how severe home bias is, the author introduces a method of quantifying it. A simple asset allocation model is used to determine the shadow cost of foreign investment-that is, the perceived annual cost of foreign equity necessary to create a bias away from perfect international risk sharing and toward domestic equity. The model shows that in most industrialized nations the shadow costs would have to be unrealistically high to account for home bias. In the United States the home bias is almost 150 basis points per year, by far the lowest among all industrialized nations. ; The article then discusses a popular explanation for home bias: information cost. This theory argues that investors face lower costs for gathering information on their domestic assets than on foreign assets and are therefore biased toward holding domestic equity. While this explanation is intuitive, the author demonstrates, using both a naive model and a rational expectations model, that the theory is unable to account for observed patterns of home bias. The author thus concludes that home bias is still a puzzle.International finance ; Capital movements ; Stock market ; Investments, Foreign
