Wax was a valuable and irreplaceable commodity in the middle ages. The wax was exclusively of natural origin, the bee was its sole producer: A colony produced per season, depending on the costume, about 15 kg honey but only about 0, 6 kg wax. Hildebrand Veckinchusen was a Hanseatic merchant, who lived at the beginning of the 15th century in Bruges, acted, and organized a wide trading network. In addition to other trades, he ran a large wax trade. The present work deals on the one hand, the raw material of wax and its varied uses in the middle ages. On the other hand, all, documented in Veckinchusens Handelsbüchern and comprehensible wax trades are presented and analyzed in this work. Over the years, Veckinchusen tarde from 1399-1421 with about 120 tons of wax. With this trade amount Veckinchusen should have been in his time one of the major wax merchants. He sold mostly of his wax in Bruges, but also in Lübeck, Mainz, Cologne and Frankfurt. The present work shows where he got the wax from, how he was organized in his commercial activities and who was his customers. To document the magnitude of the wax traded by Hildebrand Veckinchusen, the English customs accounts, the Gdańsk pound toll lists, as well as the trading accounts of the Teutonic order, as far as they contain data about the discussed period, were consulted at the end of the work.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
