    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Response of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) on infection with strawberry black spot (Colletotrichum nymphaeae (Pass.)Aa.)

    Okužba rastline z določenimi patogeni vpliva na njene metabolne procese in posledično na vsebnosti primarnih in sekundarnih metabolitov v njenih tkivih. Naša naloga je bila ugotoviti ali črna listna pegavost (Colletotrichum nymphaeae (Pass.) Aa.) vpliva na spremembe v metabolnih procesih na vrtnem jagodnjaku (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) in na kakšen način. Poleg tega pa smo sočasno preverjali tudi kakšen vpliv imajo na vsebnost primarnih in sekundarnih metabolitov določena sredstva, ki imajo potencialni fungiciden učinek in kako zavirajo razvoj bolezni. Ugotovili smo, da okuženost s črno pegavostjo zmanjša vsebnosti skupnih sladkorjev in skupnih kislin. Povečajo pa se vsebnosti skupnih fenolov. Po skupinah fenolov, ki smo jih preučevali se od njih najbolj povečajo vsebnosti skupnih flavanolov in hidroksicimetnih kislin. Sredstvi, ki smo jih uporabili (ocetna kislina in kalijev hidrogen karbonat) sta v primerjavi s kontrolo zmanjšala okuženost plodov. Uporabljeni sredstvi nista imeli značilnega vpliva na vsebnosti primarnih in sekundarnih metabolitov. Omeniti velja le, da je škropljenje s kalijevim hidrogen karbonatom povzročilo večjo vsebnost skupnih kislin v plodu.Infection of plants with some pathogen affects on metabolic processes and consequently on the value of its primary and secondary matabolites in tissues. Our task was to determine if strawberry black spot (Colletotrichum nymphaeae (Pass.)Aa.) have the impact on metabolic processes in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). We examined the influence of disease on primary and secondary metabolites and by the way we examined the influence of acetic acid and potassium bicarbonate on disease growth and metabolic processes. We found that the infection with Colletotrichum nymphaeae reduce the amount of total sugars and total acids and increase total phenolic compounds in strawberry fruit. Most remarkable increases with infection had flavanols and hydroxycinnamic acids. Spraying with acetic acid and potassium bicarbonate gave good result in suppresing fungal growth but they do not have any impact on values of primary and secondary metabolites. Only potassium bicarbonate produce higher value of total acids in the fruit

    Heat stress risk alert system for dairy cattle in Slovenia

    For the estimation of heat stress risk and modelling of prediction equations, temperature-humidity conditions were recorded on three dairy farms with different ventilation systems: natural ventilation (NV), fan ventilation during daytime (FVD) and fan ventilation during day and nighttime (FVDN). First data set was collected from April 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010 and the second from April 1, 2011 to September 30, 2011. On each farm hourly data of outdoor and barn air temperature and humidity were recorded. Results showed that in all barns the time of exposure to heat stress risk was longer compared to outdoor conditions. However, the maximum exposure to the heat stress risk conditions was reached in July 2010 and August 2011 when it was 19.1 and 18.5 hours for NV facility, 17.9 and 16.9 hours for FDV facility and 13.8 and 13.3 hours for FVDN system. Barn temperature-humidity index (THI) was estimated on the first data set. The model included the linear effect of ambient THI, month and hour of measurement. Validation of prediction equations was performed on the second data set, showing a correlation between true and estimated THI of 83.7 for NV, 82.7 for FVD and 89.4 for FVDN facility. Finally, system for prediction of dairy cow heat stress risk based on the most recent data from the nearest automatic meteorological station was incorporated into web page Govedo (www.govedo.si) to alert farmers on possible risk of heat stress

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
