European Merger Control: Is there an actual enhancement of efficiency considerations under the current common regulatory framework?

This document attempts to reveal how the Commission have been applying the new concerns of the ECMR 2004; specifically, the influence of efficiency gains on the Commission assessment, either as an independent factor or as a factor that offsets the importance of other factors. The theoretical and the statutory perspective make us previously expect a significant influence of efficiency consideration on the decision process, but such expectations should be assessed. For this purpose, the document is organized as follows. Section 1 explains the main issues of the economic theory with respect to the effects of merger on welfare. Section 2 describes the evolution of the European common regulatory merger framework. Section 3 refers the quantitative methodology used to reach our aim. Section 4 is devoted to present and to analyze the outcome of our quantitative approach. Finally conclusive section is drawn.Francia. Región Nord Pas de Calais. Beca BLÉRIO

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Proces liberalizace trhu s elektřinou v EU

This Master Thesis conducts a survey of the process of the liberalization of the electricity market, exclusively in the context of the European Union. The method of the review of the contemporary literatury is used to analyze reforms in the electricity supply industry. The thesis provides readers with the basic characteristics of the liberalization of this strategic net industry. The main focus is on one particular reform-unbundling- as it influences all principles of the eletricity energy markets. Scholars argue there are direct advantages and at the same time direct disadvanatges resulting from these reforms and it is almost impossible to find a clear agreement on if positive or negative effects prevails. In the thesis there is an attempt to evaluate whether contemporary research literature is able to decide if the liberalization reforms will bring about pure benefits for participants of the electricity markets

Competition and Market Integration -- Role of European Power Exchanges

    No full text
The main focus of this thesis is to find out degree of market integration in power exchanges in the European Union. Well integrated electricity markets imply existence of single European electricity market and advanced level of liberalization process in this sector. The thesis provides estimates of degree of market integration for six most evolved European power exchanges. Therefore, British, Dutch, French, German, Spanish and Scandinavian power exchanges have been selected during sample period 2004 - 2012. After conducting correlation and convergence analysis, the results have not suggested existence of single European electricity market and prove the effect of liberalization at regional level. The main focus of this thesis is to find out degree of market integration in power exchanges in the European Union. Competition Patterns at the EU Internal Energy Markets in Central Europe

The first part of the thesis concerns describing the main topics concerned when mentioning electroenergetics: peculiarities of electricity and specifics of this commodity as well as liberalization that took place within this sector and new patterns arisen from these changes mainly in terms of business not only in wholesale, but also with effects on retail. It also outlines the economic rationale behind these changes. The second part of the thesis is an empirical analysis of real wholesale market data, demonstrating results of correlation, convergence and cointegration in spot prices of wholesale electricity in particular European countries

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
