Mani and Free Press Journal editorial policy, particularly in relation to identifying authors (with bylines as was then the American practice – Sadanand refuses Mani’s request for such identification) and to setting up a consolidated news office in Singapore. Mani is confirmed as FPJ correspondent for Malaya and Singapore.

No full textFrom the current vantage point of the transformation of books and libraries, B. Venkat Mani presents a historical account of world literature. By locating translation, publication, and circulation along routes of "bibliomigrancy"--The physical and virtual movement of books - Mani narrates how world literature is coded and recoded as literary works find new homes on faraway bookshelves. Mani argues that the proliferation of world literature in a society is the function of a nation's relationship with print culture - a Faustian pact with books. Moving from early Orientalist collections, to the Nazi magazine Weltliteratur, to the European Digital Library, Mani reveals the political foundations for a history of world literature that is at once a philosophical ideal, a process of exchange, a mode of reading, and a system of classification. No full textL’Autrice esamina la questione di legittimità costituzionale dell’art. 47-ter, comma 1-ter ord. pen. nella parte in cui detta previsione di legge non prevede l’applicazione della detenzione domiciliare anche nelle ipotesi di grave infermità psichica sopravvenuta durante l’esecuzione della pena. In particolare, si evidenziano le criticità della normativa penitenziaria con riferimento specifico all’assenza di strumenti alternativi alla detenzione carceraria per il detenuto in esecuzione pena con residuo superiore a quattro anni, affetto da grave patologia psichica sopravvenuta, stante l’inapplicabilità sia degli artt. 146, 147 e 148 c.p. sia della detenzione domiciliare c.d. “umanitaria” ex art. 47-ter comma 1-ter ord. pen., in as-senza di rinvio –nella citata disposizione di legge- alla norma di cui all’art. 148 c.p.The Author examines the question of the constitutionality of art. 47-ter, comma 1-ter ord. pen. in the part in which this provision of law does not provide for the application of domicile detention even in cases of serious psychic infirmity occurred during the execution of the sentence. Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Strength of CAD/CAM Anterior FPD Framework Made with Zirconia and Peek Cemented using Resin Cement: An In-Vitro Study
No full textPURPOSE OF THE STUDY:
Introduction of Zirconia in dentistry has expanded the possible application of metal free ceramic restoration with great success and reliability. Among the clinical complications of Zirconia FPD’s, crown/connector fractures are reported most commonly. As PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) is high performance polymer, with low modulus of elasticity resulting in shock absorbing effect which makes it less prone to fracture. Fracture strength of Zirconia is well known, hence this study aimed to evaluate the fracture strength of PEEK and compare it with Zirconia.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE:
This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the fracture strength of Computer Aided Designing, Computer Aided Manufacturing, 3-unit anterior Zirconia and PEEK framework.
MATERIALS AND METHOD:
Prefabricated prepared teeth model for 3-unit anterior FPD in relation to 21, 22 & 23 was obtained and scanned using 3 Shape, Trios intraoral scanner and a metallic die was milled using base metal alloy. The metallic die was scanned using the same Intra oral scanner (3 shape, Trios). Five, 3-unit CAD/CAM Zirconia (Group A) and five, 3-unit PEEK (Group B) frameworks were fabricated and cemented to the metallic die using resin cement. A universal testing machine was used for the fracture strength evaluation. The load was applied to the specimen at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min until catastrophic failure occurred. This was repeated for all the FPD framework and the fracture strength mean value was recorded and statistically analyzed through Unpaired Student t-test.
RESULT:
The mean fracture strength of CAD/CAM Zirconia is 1862 N +18.8149 N and the mean fracture strength of CAD/CAM PEEK is 2563 N +19.7231 N. Fracture strength of CAD/CAM PEEK framework was higher than that of CAD/CAM Zirconia framework. The values were statistically significant by 1% (p value < 0.01).
CONCLUSION:
Since PEEK showed a significantly higher fracture strength value compared to Zirconia, it could be an alternative metal free, esthetic material for replacing missing anterior teeth
The strange case of the Turkish and Venetian judges in eighteenth-century Mani wall paintings
No full textInvestigating church wall paintings in Mani, Greece, the author identified a common theme of the Ainoi, the graphic interpretation of Psalms 148-150. Within this scheme there is often a specific depiction of the 'Judges of the Earth' as an Ottoman judge and a Venetian nobleman. This depiction is unique to Mani and is restricted to the mid-eighteenth century and those areas of Mani dominated by the rule of the kapetanoi. The paintings allude to the lack of established legal systems in that period of Mani's history and refer back to times of stable law under Ottoman and Venetian rule
Dual Chemical-Electric Propulsion Systems Design for Interplanetary CubeSats
No full textInterplanetary CubeSats enable universities and smallspacecraft- consortia to pursue low-cost, high-risk and highgain Solar System Exploration missions, especially Mars; for which cost-effective, reliable, and flexible space systems need to be developed. Missions to Mars can be achieved through a) in-situ deployment by a mothership and b) highly flexible stand-alone CubeSats on deep-space cruise. The current work focuses on sizing and establishing critical design parameters for dual chemical-electric propulsion systems that shall enable a stand-alone 16U CubeSat mission on a hybrid high-thrust & low-thrust trajectory. High thrust is used to escape Earth whereas low-thrust is used in autonomous deep-space cruise, achieving ballistic capture, and emplacement on an areosynchronous orbit at Mars. Chemical propulsion characterisation is based on V requirement and a heuristic optimisation of thrust, specific impulse and burn time while balancing transfer time and propellant mass. Limitations are set to minimise destabilising momentum. Electric propulsion characterisation is based on the V, power consumption, and trajectory requirements for fueloptimal and time-optimal strategies. Gene birth in a model of non-genic adaptation
No full textBackground: Over evolutionary timescales, genomic loci can switch between functional and non-functional states through processes such as pseudogenization and de novo gene birth. Particularly, de novo gene birth is a widespread process, and many examples continue to be discovered across diverse evolutionary lineages. However, the general mechanisms that lead to functionalization are poorly understood, and estimated rates of de novo gene birth remain contentious. Here, we address this problem within a model that takes into account mutations and structural variation, allowing us to estimate the likelihood of emergence of new functions at non-functional loci. Results: Assuming biologically reasonable mutation rates and mutational effects, we find that functionalization of non-genic loci requires the realization of strict conditions. This is in line with the observation that most de novo genes are localized to the vicinity of established genes. Our model also provides an explanation for the empirical observation that emerging proto-genes are often lost despite showing signs of adaptation. Conclusions: Our work elucidates the properties of non-genic loci that make them fertile for adaptation, and our results offer mechanistic insights into the process of de novo gene birth. © 2023, The Author(s).11Nsciescopu

No full textWhat does it mean to belong? How are twenty-first-century diasporic subjects fashioning identities and communities that bind them together? Aspiring to Home examines these questions with a focus on immigrants from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Advancing a theory of locality to explain the means through which immigrants of varying regional, religious, and linguistic backgrounds experience what it means to belong, Bakirathi Mani shows how ethnicity is produced through the relationship between domestic racial formations and global movements of class and capital. Aspiring to Home focuses on popular cultural works created by first- and second-generation South Asians from 1999–2009, including those by author Jhumpa Lahiri and filmmaker Mira Nair, as well as public events such as the Miss India U.S.A. pageant and the Broadway musical Bombay Dreams. Analyzing these diverse productions through an interdisciplinary framework, Mani weaves literary readings with ethnography to unravel the constraints of form and genre that shape how we read diasporic popular culture
