The role of product modularity in supporting circular supply chains: a multiple case study analysis
LAUREA MAGISTRALEQuesta tesi si propone di affrontare il ruolo che il disegno modulare può svolgere a supporto di una catena di fornitura circolare (CSC) concentrandosi sui principali vantaggi o limiti ed evidenziando l'impatto specifico che ogni diversa strategia di disegno modulare può avere sulla circolarità.
La necessità di affrontare questi temi nasce dall'attenzione urgente che molte aziende e autorità politiche stanno attivamente ponendo sulle questioni di economia circolare. La pressione della società verso la creazione di un “mondo circolare” in cui le risorse vengano recuperate è davvero alta e il design dei prodotti viene spesso presentato come un passo importante che le aziende possono compiere verso questo obiettivo. Questo, unito ai pochi approfondimenti in letteratura sul legame tra disegno modulare e e CSC, rende i temi trattati in questa tesi molto attuali e rilevanti.
Pertanto, le domande di ricerca che racchiudono questa esigenza e alle quali lo studio intende rispondere sono: “In che modo le aziende sfruttano il disegno modulare per perseguire obiettivi di economia circolare?” e “Quali design modulari supportano gli obiettivi di economia circolare?”. Di conseguenza, è stato condotto uno studio esplorativo su 10 casi, che includono vari attori rilevanti nel settore delle tecnologie dell'informazione e della comunicazione, degli elettrodomestici e quello automobilistico, e che forniscono diverse prospettive per inquadrare il ruolo del disegno modulare nelle CSC.
Dall'analisi dei risultati emersi, si può affermare che il disegno modulare ha davvero un ruolo fondamentale nel supportare il passaggio ad una CSC, con importanti benefici ma anche limiti che devono essere considerati. In particolare, è stato possibile notare come alcune specifiche tipologie di disegno modulare, ovvero quella a bus e quella sezionale, siano quelle che supportano maggiormente la circolarità piuttosto che quella a slot. Inoltre, i dati raccolti hanno rivelato una serie di fattori contingenti che possono impedire all'azienda di sfruttare appieno il ruolo che il design modulare può avere a supporto della CSC.
Lo studio affronta in particolare tutti quei fattori che influenzano la relazione tra modularità e CSC, offrendo una nuova prospettiva sulle sfide e le dinamiche in corso. Il disegno modulare viene presentato come un orchestratore fondamentale per la circolarità, ma per comprenderne appieno le potenzialità è necessario esaminare un più ampio spettro di variabili e attori. In pratica, questo studio fornirà un quadro finale che descrive in dettaglio tutti i diversi aspetti che devono essere considerati nell'esaminare il ruolo del disegno modulare per la CSC, uno strumento importante che sia le aziende che le autorità politiche potranno utilizzare nell'approcciare questo argomento.This thesis aims at addressing the role that modular design can play in supporting circular supply chains (CSC), focusing on the main advantages or limitations and highlighting the specific impact that each different modular design strategy can have on fostering circularity.
The need of facing these issues arises from the urgent attention that many companies and policymakers are actively putting on circular economy topics. The society pressure to create a more “circular world” where resources are recovered is really high, and working on product design is often presented as an important step that companies can make toward this objective. This, combined with few insights found in literature about the link between modular design and circular supply chains, make the issues discussed in this thesis very timely and relevant. Therefore, the research questions that encapsulates this need and which the study aims to answer are: “How do companies leverage modular design to pursue circular economy objectives?” and “Which modular designs do support circular economy objectives?”
Consequently, an exploratory study of 10 cases was conducted, which include various relevant players in information technology communication (ITC), household appliances and automotive industry, and provide different perspectives to frame the role of modular design for CSC.
From the analysis of the results that emerged, it could be stated that modular design has really a fundamental role in supporting the shift toward CSC with important benefits but also limitations that have to be considered. In particular, it was possible to notice how some specific type of modular designs, namely bus and sectional, are the ones that support more circularity rather than the slot one. Moreover, the data collected revealed a series of contingency factors that may prevent the company to fully exploit the role that modular design can have in supporting CSC.
The study particularly addresses all those factors that influence the relationship between modular design and CSC, offering a new perspective on the challenges and the ongoing dynamics. Modular design is presented a fundamental orchestrator for CSC, but a wider spectrum of variables and actors has to be examined to fully understand its potentiality. In practise, this study will provide a final framework detailing all the different aspects that have to be considered in defining the role of modular design for CSC, an important instrument that both companies and policymakers could use in approaching this topic
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
