Ramkie: An Experiment in Organology
This short documentary film, directed and produced by Engela Britz, is a creative component that accompanies her (2019) minor dissertation entitled "Songs in the Dust: Riel Music of the Northern and Western Cape, South Africa." It documents an experimental instrument-making workshop featuring Gert Swarts, Klaas van Zyl and Kola Zandberg, which was hosted by the author in Brandvlei, Northern Cape, South Africa
A yodel-like vocal technique called ('Nxarra', 'Tjeedel' or 'Kwêr')
This audio sample contains three extracts. In these three extracts, riel singers employ a yodel-like vocal technique known as 'nxarra', 'tjeedel' or 'kwêr'. The Extracts are from 'Die Bloupoort' (Carnarvon), 'My Boesmanland' (Brandvlei), and 'Kriebêrre toe!' (Loeriesfontein) found on the music album, Ruk en Riel: Volume 1 (2016), released by the ATKV. The author worked as assistant director on the album and the content is used with permission from the ATKV for academic purposes. The audio sample accompanies Engela Britz's (2019) minor dissertation entitled "Songs in the Dust: Riel Music in the Northern and Western Cape, South Africa."</div
Brongebruik in die populêre historiese roman, met spesiale verwysing na Engela van Rooyen en Oswald Pirow
"Use of sources for popular historical novels, with special reference to Engela van Rooyen and Oswald Pirow"This paper focuses on the infl uence that an almost unknown Afrikaans novel, Mlungu Mungoma by Oswald Pirow, (published in 1949) had on aspects regarding characterisation and plot in the popular historical novel Vuur op die horison by Engela van Rooyen (2000). The connection between these two novels and the questions thatare raised concerning certain characteristics of the historical novel – more specifically the popular historical novel as opposed to clearly postmodern novels – is investigated. The principal problem statement is the following: in what way or ways do authors of popular historical novels (and in this instance Van Rooyen in particular) give recognition to and admit indebtedness to a text or texts that were used as sources – either as sources of inspiration (which is the case here) or for the historical presentation of the novel? Questions that the author addresses are the following:- What is the nature of the historical novel – how can it be characterised and distinguished from other kinds of fi ction?- Does the popular novel show an awareness of the complex relation between historiography and fi ction?- Is there an existing convention regarding the use and recognition of sources in the (late twentieth, early twenty fi rst century) popular historical novel? The author argues that the delicate balance between text and source should perhaps be admitted by authors of popular novels, even though the self-conscious way in which postmodern fiction approaches this relationship is absent from typical popular fiction discourse

Abstract: THE INSURANCE OF SELFSTEERING AND DISTANCE STEERED VEHICLESIn this contribution, the author focuses on automated and autonomously driven vehicles and in particular on the applicable Belgian law; it is furthermore limited to road and air transport (in the civilian sphere). The author defines these vehicles in terms of the mode of transport and the mode of steering, ie remote steering, steering without a driver and completely automatic steering. Before investigating the insurance law regime, he investigates the regulatory framework relating to vehicles used on the road as well as aircraft. He gives a succinct explanation of the conventions and legislative measures in place that regulate the use and steering of these vessels from a Belgian perspective with reference to the implications of their harmonisation in Europe. In his discussion of insurance coverage, he focuses on liability insurance, since the liability that may follow from the use of automated and autonomouslysteered vehicles is more complicated and interesting than looking at mere indemnity insurance. At the moment, it does not seem as if the insurance industry foresees a huge impact in the short term. In the long term, it is being forecast that liability insurance for motor vehicles will decrease, since 90% of all accidents are as a result of human error. It is to be expected, however, that the liability will shift from the driver of the vehicle to the manufacturer and the developer of the software of the steering mechanism and so forth. The author also investigates the phenomenon of drones, which create an aviation risk.He concludes that the insurance regime relating to automated and autonomously driven vehicles does not create insurmountable problems. The insurance coverage that may be provided for damages caused by unmanned aircraft, however, is disparate and fragmented, with many loopholes, and thus does not provide proper insurance for third parties who suffer damage. The potential to have proper insurance against the damage that may be caused by drones does not currently exi
Assessing, updating and utilising primary care smoking records for lung cancer screening
Background:
Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography for high-risk populations is being implemented in the UK. However, inclusive identification and invitation of the high-risk population is a major challenge for equitable lung screening implementation. Primary care electronic health records (EHRs) can be used to identify lung screening-eligible individuals based on age and smoking history, but the quality of EHR smoking data is limited. This study piloted a novel strategy for ascertaining smoking status in primary care and tested EHR search combinations to identify those potentially eligible for lung cancer screening.
Methods:
Seven primary care General Practices in South Wales, UK were included. Practice-level data on missing tobacco codes in EHRs were obtained. To update patient EHRs with no tobacco code, we developed and tested an algorithm that sent a text message request to patients via their GP practice to update their smoking status. The patient’s response automatically updated their EHR with the relevant tobacco code. Four search strategies using different combinations of tobacco codes for the age range 55-74+ 364 were tested to estimate the likely impact on the potential lung screening-eligible population in Wales. Search strategies included: BROAD (wide range of ever smoking codes); VOLUME (wide range of ever-smoking codes excluding “trivial” former smoking); FOCUSED (cigarette-related tobacco codes only), and RECENT (current smoking within the last 20 years).
Results:
Tobacco codes were not recorded for 3.3% of patients (n = 724/21,956). Of those with no tobacco code and a validated mobile telephone number (n = 333), 55% (n = 183) responded via text message with their smoking status. Of the 183 patients who responded, 43.2% (n = 79) had a history of smoking and were potentially eligible for lung cancer screening. Applying the BROAD search strategy was projected to result in an additional 148,522 patients eligible to receive an invitation for lung cancer screening when compared to the RECENT strategy.
Conclusion:
An automated text message system could be used to improve the completeness of primary care EHR smoking data in preparation for rolling out a national lung cancer screening programme. Varying the search strategy for tobacco codes may have profound implications for the size of the population eligible for lung-screening invitation
