    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A quantum OFDM framework for high-fidelity image transmission

    Quantum communication offers a promising solution to overcome the limitations of classical communication, especially in addressing channel noise and signal fading. Inspired by classical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), this study introduces a novel Quantum OFDM (QOFDM) framework for image transmission over noisy quantum channels. In the proposed system, the input image bitstream is channel encoded and then quantum encoded using qubit sizes ranging from 1 to 8, optimizing the trade-off between complexity and performance. This data is processed via serial-to-parallel conversion, and the Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) is applied to create orthogonal subcarriers. After reconversion to serial, a cyclic prefix is added to mitigate inter-symbol interference. At the receiver, the cyclic prefix is removed, the signal is converted to parallel, and Inverse QFT (IQFT) is applied to recover the quantum states. The system then performs parallel-to-serial conversion, quantum decoding, and classical reconstruction to retrieve the transmitted image. Performance evaluation using Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) shows that QOFDM outperforms classical OFDM in both image quality and noise resilience. The eight-qubit configuration achieves notable channel Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) gains, 22 dB in urban environments, and 16 dB in indoor settings over classical BPSK, despite higher computational demands. These results demonstrate the significant potential of QOFDM to improve multimedia communications

    A quantum OFDM framework for next-generation video transmission over noisy channels

    Quantum communication presents new opportunities for overcoming the limitations of classical wireless systems, particularly those associated with noise, fading, and interference. Building upon the principles of classical orthogonal frequency division multi-plexing (OFDM), this work proposes a quantum OFDM architecture tailored for video transmission. In the proposed system, video sequences are first compressed using the versatile video coding (VVC) standard with different group of pictures (GOP) sizes. Each GOP size is processed through a channel encoder and mapped to multi-qubit states with various qubit configurations. The quantum-encoded data is converted from serial-to-parallel form and passed through the quantum Fourier transform (QFT) to generate mutually orthogonal quantum subcarriers. Following reserialization, a cyclic prefix is appended to mitigate inter-symbol interference within the quantum channel. At the receiver, the cyclic prefix is removed, and the signal is restored to parallel before the inverse QFT (IQFT) recovers the original quantum subcarriers. Quantum decoding, classical channel decoding, and VVC reconstruction are then employed to recover the videos. Experimental evaluations across different GOP sizes and channel conditions demonstrate that quantum OFDM provides superior resilience to channel noise and improved perceptual quality compared to classical OFDM, achieving peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) up to 47.60 dB, structural similarity index measure (SSIM) up to 0.9987, and video multi-method assessment fusion (VMAF) up to 96.40. Notably, the eight-qubit encoding scheme consistently achieves the highest SNR gains across all channels, underscoring the potential of quantum OFDM as a foundation for future high-quality video transmissio

    Rethinking video transmission : a quantum Fourier transform-based approach for error-prone channels

    Reliable video transmission over error-prone channels remains a significant challenge due to the inherent trade-off between compression efficiency and noise resilience in conventional systems. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel quantum Fourier transform (QFT)-based framework that integrates video compression and transmission within a unified quantum frequency-domain representation. The framework converts video data into a classical bitstream and maps it onto multi-qubit quantum states with variable encoding sizes (n), enabling flexible control over compression levels. Through the application of the QFT, these states are transformed into the frequency domain, where only selected coefficients are transmitted to reduce bandwidth requirements. At the receiver, the transmitted components are used to reconstruct the full representation, followed by inverse transformation and decoding to recover the video sequence. The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated using peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), and video multi-method assessment fusion (VMAF). The results demonstrate that increasing the number of qubits enables exponential compression, achieving ratios up to 2n:1, while maintaining high reconstruction quality under ideal transmission conditions. However, higher-qubit configurations exhibit increased sensitivity to channel noise, leading to a more rapid degradation as the signal-to-noise ratio decreases. In contrast, lower-qubit configurations provide improved robustness, maintaining more stable reconstruction quality under noisy conditions, albeit with reduced compression efficiency. Among the evaluated configurations, the two-qubit system achieves an effective trade-off, providing a compression ratio of 4:1 while maintaining strong visual and structural fidelity along with enhanced resilience to channel impairments

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
