Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Neogene biostratigraphy from dinoflagellates in NW South America, Colombian Pacific
This study presents the quantitative and qualitative palynological analyses of 50 samples from the well Buenaventura 1-ST-P, located in the Colombian Pacific, contributing to the knowledge on the distribution in space and time of Neogene dinoflagellates from this tropical area of South America. An integrated biostratigraphic framework of the studied section was developed combining data from the dinoflagellates observed here and from calcareous nannofossils, pollen and spores known from the same samples. Also an integrated paleobathymetric curve of the studied column was established with information from lithology, benthic foraminifera and dinoflagellates. A high resolution chronostratigraphic framework was obtained based on the correlation of the integrated biostratigraphy and the paleobathymetric curve with the eustatic cycles proposed by Haq et al., (1988)
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
100 years of Dinoflagellates and Paleoceanographic changes in Basin Magdalena, Baja California Sur
Part of the oceanographic and climatic reconstruction of the Pacific margin of Baja California Sur, from 1909 to 2009 is presented here. This reconstruction is based on the changes shown by the dinoflagellates and other palynomorphs from 51 samples from a core taken in the Magdalena Basin. The anoxic bottom of this basin contains laminated sediments, and is influenced by the cool northern waters of the California Current and southern warm waters of the Norequatorial Current. Changes in taxonomic composition and abundances of the palynological assemblages are compared to regional measurement records and Indexes of Coastal Upwelling (CUI; NOAA), Sea Surface Temperature (SSTI; GISTEMP) and rainfall (CICESE-peaccBC). Results illustrate the mixed regional oceanographic characteristics, and reflect the SST warming, suggesting a stronger regional tropicalization from ~1990. Resultys show significant correlations of heterotrophic dinoflagellates with SSTI (0.6-0.7) and in minor degree with CUI (0.4-0.5), verifying the position of the basin at 60 km from the shore. In particular, the dinoflagellate Selenopemphix presents (0.54) correlation with SSTI, and (0.52) with CUI. Other heterotrophic marine palynomorphs like the copepods, also show a correlation (0.71) with SSTI. Autotrophic dionoflagellates are correlated significantly almost equally to SSTI (0.37) and to CUI (0.42). In addition, concentrations of pollen and spores show a significant correlation (-0.30 a -0.52) with SSTI, while angiosperm pollen does not present any significant correlation to regional rainfall. These relations are confirmes by results from factorial analyses (FA) and principal components (PC), indicating the importance that upwelling related coastal fog has to provide humidity to desert regions like those in Baja California Sur. Results from FA and PC suggest a relation of gimnosperm and spores to rainfall
Palynological record in sediments of the Snow Hill Island Formation (Early Maastrichtian) in The Naze, James Ross Island, Antarctica, and its relation with palaeoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes
The Antarctic Peninsula is important to understand the geological evolution of the Antarctic continent during the Upper Cretaceous. Study of the dinoflagellates allow to define the geological ages of the sediments deposited during this period, specify their sedimentary environments and interpret that the general paleoecology. Here, I present the results of the dinoflagellate study of 47 samples of an outcrop section from the Cape Lamb member of the Snow Hill Island Formation, located at The Naze peninsula of the James Ross Island, neighboring the Antarctic Peninsula. These data were integrated with lithological, palynological and megafossil data obtained in the literature. The results indicate that the section represents sedimentation from ~ 75 Ma to ~ 70 Ma. The presence of Kallosphaeridium? helbyi (126.3-72.1 Ma) and Chatangiella granulifera (89.8-72.1 Ma), together with Pterodinium cretaceum (75-67.5 Ma) indicates that the lower strata were deposited during the late Campanian between 75 and 72.1 Ma. While Manumiella bertodano (72.1 - 66 Ma), together with Odontochitna operculata (123.9-70 Ma), Xenascus ceratioides (129.9-70 Ma) and Stiphrosphaeridium anthophorum (163.5-70 Ma) indicate that the upper strata were deposited during the early Maastrichtian, between 72.1 and 70 Ma. Dinoflagellate assemblages are abundant and dominated by autotrophic taxa. The combination of all the data indicate deposition mainly in neritic environments. In the upper part of the Campanian (~ 73 Ma), a slightly deeper environment is interpreted, below mean wave base (> 20 m), indicated by the predominance of shales. While in the lower part of the Maastrichtian interval (~ 71 Ma), a transitional environment (intertidal) is indicated by the presence of theropod dinosaurs, decapod crustaceans, and the acritarch Michrystridium pilosum. This shallow interval seems to correlate with a eustatic low sea level. In conclusion, a marine environment with high productivity is determined, with a temperate paleoclimate free of glaciers for this interval. The results improve the chronostratigraphic framework and increase our knowledge of the paleoclimatic changes of the Antarctic Peninsula from ~75 to ~70 Ma
Palynological record in laminated sediments from the southern Gulf of California, and its relation with paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic change
The detailed study of laminated sediments helps improve the current paleoclimatic models and provides the opportunity to recognize signals or factors useful in the reconstruction of sedimentary environments. Palynomorphs contain information on the environmental conditions at the time of deposition and on the transport of material from nearby continental areas. In particular dinoflagellate cysts can be used as indicators of productivity of marine basins. The objectives of this study are: 1) to describe the palynological
assemblages preserved in laminated sediments from Pescadero basin, southern Gulf of California, deposited from 1483 to 1994, and 2) show the probable relation of the variability of the palynological record and that of pluvial precipitation (PP), winds from the northwest (NWW) and sea surface temperature (SST). Here are documented the palynological assemblages observed in samples from 2 cores, colected from Pescadero basin. The samples were processed with acid digestion, without oxidation and Lycopodium
spores were for the quantitative analyses. In both cores (1907-1994 and 1483-1968), the concentrations show predominance of the marine assemblages (<=40,000 specimens/gr sediment) over the continental (<=15,00 specimens/gr sediment) and fungi (<=8,00 specimens/gr sediment), and all of them decrease in the same time intervals. The correlation and principal component analyses show that the concentrations are related primarily to marine primary productivity and secondarily to terrigenous influx. According to regional models, strong NWW encourage intense upwellings, thus increasing the concentration of marine palynomorphs, particularly dinoflagellate cysts. Conversely, the concentrations of palynomorphs decrease during periods with higher PP (Chapter II). Furthermore, in the core representing sedimentation from 1907 to 1994, the dinoflagellate cysts observed show good correlation with the NWW and SST in the area. These cysts include 19 species of the Gonyaulacales (G, photosynthetic) and Perdiniales (P, heterotrophic) orders, which are dominated by Bitectatodinium spongium (G) and Brigantedinium spp. (P) respectively. Concentrations of both orders are higher during periods with a warm/positive phase of ther Pacific Decadal Oscillation, when the local NWW and upwelling events tend to increase
Palynological record in laminated sediments of the basin San Lazaro, Baja California Sur and its relationship with paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes from 1988 to 2009
Estas condiciones indican que las surgencias aumentan la productividad marina, al llevar nutrientes a la zona fótica, mientras que aumentan la productividad continental al proveer humedad en zonas desérticas costerasWe present the results from the palynological analyses of 50 samples of the core SOLE 09-01, taken from San Lazaro Basin, located to the southwest of the continental margin of the Baja California peninsula in the pacific side. The samples represent sedimentation from 1998 to 2009 AC with an approximate resolution of 4 months. We document and analyze the concentrations of marine and continental palynomorphs and compare them with regional rainfall, sea surface temperature (SST), and the indexes for coastal upwelling, Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Total concentrations present a mean of 6,588 pal / g sed, with the maximum (14,692 pal /g sed) during the interval from 1996 to 2004, while the minimum concentration (957 pal /g sed) was observed in the sample corresponding to 1992.3. Of the 41 dinoflagellate species, the heterotrophic Brigantedinium sp. is the most abundant (99.6%). The influence of the California Current is reflected by the almost continuous presence, of the autotrophic Ataxodinium choane, which has been reported from temperate to sub-polar environments. However, from 1996 there is an increase in the presence of the thermophilic species Stelladinium stellatum, Dubridinium caperatum, Votadinium calvum y Quinquecuspis concreta, which reflect the influence of the tropical Northern Equatorial Counter current. This increase coincides with a reported rise in SST. The concentrations of heterotrophic dinoflagellates and continental palynomorphs are strongly modulated by a combination of ODP conditions and ENOA events. So that they reach high values during Niña events and negative ODP conditions, and they decrease during Niño events and positive ODP conditions. These relations are particularly evident in the 1996 Niña, and the 1998 Niño. In contrast, both types of palynomorphs have no significant correlation with measured regional rainfall. These conditions indicate that upwelling increases marine productivity by bringing nutrients to the photic zone, and increase continental productivity by increasing the available humidity in coastal desert region
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
