E-readers and adolescent engagement: a formative design experiment
Introduction As the use of e-readers becomes commonplace and more affordable, they will make their way into the hands of students. This research provides information about how the devices might be used as a tool to improve adolescent students‘ reading engagement and also helps to identify the struggles and pitfalls educators may face in implementing classroom use of e-readers. Purpose of the Study This study investigated how the use of dedicated electronic reading devices could be implemented as an intervention in an eighth grade language arts classroom to improve students‘ reading engagement. Methods and Procedures Six students from an eighth grade, heterogeneous class in a sizeable suburban middle school in a large, regional district participated in formative design experiment (Reinking & Bradley, 2008). Quantitative and qualitative data were collected prior to and after implementation of the e-reader intervention to determine a baseline of the students‘ reading engagement and to assess any changes. Additionally, qualitative data were collected throughout the intervention. Quantitative data were analyzed using a pairedsamples t-test for the following measures: Reading Engagement Index (Guthrie et al., 2007), Adolescent Motivation to Read Profile (Pitcher et al., 2007), Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (Mokhtari& Reichard, 2002) and The Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (Wigfield & Guthrie, 1997). Qualitative data were coded for recurring themes derived from the following sources: classroom observation and field notes, teacher reflective journal, student and intervention specialist interviews and student written reflections. Results and Discussion Analyses revealed that using an e-reader for assigned school reading had a positive impact on aspects of students reading engagement. Classroom implications, unanticipated effects and changes to the educational environment are also discussed.Ed. D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Kristine Lynch Shurin
The impossibility of boosting distributed service resilience
We study f-resilient services, which are guaranteed to operate as long as no more than f of the associated processes fail. We prove three theorems asserting the impossibility of boosting the resilience of such services. Our first theorem allows any connection pattern between processes and services but assumes these services to be atomic (linearizable) objects. This theorem says that no distributed system in which processes coordinate using f-resilient atomic objects and reliable registers can solve the consensus problem in the presence of f+1 undetectable process stopping failures. In contrast, we show that it is possible to boost the resilience of some systems solving problems easier than consensus: for example, the 2-set-consensus problem is solvable for 2n processes and 2n-1 failures (i.e., wait-free) using n-process consensus services resilient to n-1 failures (wait-free). Our proof is short and self-contained. We then introduce the larger class of failure-oblivious services. These are services that cannot use information about failures, although they may behave more flexibly than atomic objects. An example of such a service is totally ordered broadcast. Our second theorem generalizes the first theorem and its proof to failure-oblivious services. Our third theorem allows the system to contain failure-aware services, such as failure detectors, in addition to failure-oblivious services. This theorem requires that each failure-aware service be connected to all processes; thus, f+1 process failures overall can disable all the failure-aware services. In contrast, it is possible to boost the resilience of a system solving consensus using failure-aware services if arbitrary connection patterns between processes and services are allowed: consensus is solvable for any number of failures using only 1-resilient 2-process perfect failure detectors. As far as we know, this is the first time a unified framework has been used to describe both atomic and non-atomic objects, and the first time boosting analysis has been performed for services more general than atomic objects. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. The Manchester International Consensus Group recommendations for the management of gynecological cancers in Lynch syndrome
\ua9 2019, The Author(s). Purpose: There are no internationally agreed upon clinical guidelines as to which women with gynecological cancer would benefit from Lynch syndrome screening or how best to manage the risk of gynecological cancer in women with Lynch syndrome. The Manchester International Consensus Group was convened in April 2017 to address this unmet need. The aim of the Group was to develop clear and comprehensive clinical guidance regarding the management of the gynecological sequelae of Lynch syndrome based on existing evidence and expert opinion from medical professionals and patients. Methods: Stakeholders from Europe and North America worked together over a two-day workshop to achieve consensus on best practice. Results: Guidance was developed in four key areas: (1) whether women with gynecological cancer should be screened for Lynch syndrome and (2) how this should be done, (3) whether there was a role for gynecological surveillance in women at risk of Lynch syndrome, and (4) what preventive measures should be recommended for women with Lynch syndrome to reduce their risk of gynecological cancer. Conclusion: This document provides comprehensive clinical guidance that can be referenced by both patients and clinicians so that women with Lynch syndrome can expect and receive appropriate standards of care
Ante-Autobiography and the Archive of Childhood
This essay examines the concept of children’s autobiography via several autobiographical extracts
written by the author as a child. Although only a small proportion of people will compose and
publish a full-length autobiography, almost everyone will, inadvertently, produce an archive of
the self, made from public records and private documents. Here, such works are seen as providing
access to writing both about and by children. The essay explores the ethics and poetics of
children’s writing via the key debates in life writing; in particular, the dynamic relationship
between adults and children, both as distinct stages of life and dual parts of one autobiographical
identity. The term “ante-autobiography” is coined to refer to these texts which come before or
instead of a full-length narrative. They are not read as less than or inadequate versions of
autobiography, but rather as transgressive and challenging to chronological notions of the genre
I\u27m Not Rockefeller: Implications for Major Foundations Seeking to Engage Ultra- High-Net-Worth Donors
· This article describes how a group of 33 ultrahigh- net-worth philanthropists (UHNWPs) approach their giving.
· A few key areas dominated their giving priorities: education; health; poverty and social welfare; and children/youth initiatives each were a priority for more than a quarter of participants – with education expressed as an interest of 55 percent.
· A third of the 24 who responded to the question spent less than 10 percent of their full working time devoted to philanthropy, and 13 dedicated less than 20 percent of their working time.
· UHNWPs view their peers as their most trusted information resource. After peers, the most commonly cited source of information was the popular press.
· UHNWPs typically are ambivalent or uncertain about the value of evaluation.
· Partnerships between organized philanthropy and UHNWPs has potential benefits for both, if barriers of job responsibilities, training, communication styles and vocabulary can be overcome
An Institutional Repository Initiative and Issues Concerning Metadata
Ankara University has become one of the fist open access initiatives in Turkey. Ankara University Open Access Program (AUO) was formed as part of the Open Access project (http://acikarsiv.ankara.edu.tr ) and supported by the University with an example of an open access institutional repository. As for the further step, the system will require the metadata tools to enable international recognization. According to Budapest Open Access Initiative, as suggested two strategies for open access that are self-archiving and open access-journals AUOA system aims to be compatible with international standards. In this sense, the program will adapt generic framework to the requirements of repository metadata tasks within Turkish language-based interface. Therefore, this paper outlines a method for creating a format using Dublin Core(DC) elements of an institutional repository at Ankara University. Handling metadata repository by cataloguing staff is the most professional method; however, professional creators such as catalogers are limited in their availability at Ankara University. This raises problems; although, the tools that are used to submit digital objects will allow authors generated metadata format. The research presented in this paper proposes a format for Turkish language-based metadata crosswalks. The crosswalks are encoded as DC records that could be generated by author. The DC metadata set is an accepted scheme for using simple description of digital information. In this paper, it will be discussed how essential elements of metadata repository can be created to simplify the process of submission and repository management of the progra
Clinicopathological Features in Endometrial Carcinoma Associated With Lynch Syndrome in China
Objective: To Study the clinicopathological characteristics of Lynch syndrome-associated endometrial carcinoma in China. Methods: Twenty-seven patients who fulfilled Amsterdam criteria 11 were classified as having Lynch syndrome-associated endometrial carcinoma (group A), and 33 1 patients without a family history of cancer were classified as having sporadic endometrial carcinoma (group B). Results: There were 81 malignancies in 27 families with Lynch syndrome-associated endometrial carcinoma, including colorectal cancer (24.7%), endometrial carcinoma (21.0%), and liver (12.3%), stomach (9.9%), lung (6.2%), and breast (6.2%) cancers. Mean age at the time of diagnosis was 49.7 years in group A and 56.3 years in group B (P = 0.004). Second primary cancers occurred in 33.3% of patients in group A and 5.1% in group B (P = 0.000). The most common second primary cancers were colorectal cancer (44%) and ovarian cancer (22%). The percentage of obese patients was higher in group A (P=0.013). There was no difference between the 2 groups in incidence of diabetes mellitus or hypertension or in histological type and International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage. The 5-year survival rates for groups A and B were 96.2% and 79.6%, respectively. Prognosis for group A was better than for group B (P = 0.045). Conclusions: Some clinicopathological features of Lynch syndrome-associated endometrial carcinoma, Such as early onset and multiple primary carcinomas are similar in the Chinese and American/European Populations. However, the Chinese population had a unique family cancer distribution that included lung and breast cancers. Well-differentiated grade and good prognosis imply better biobehavior of Lynch syndrome-associated endometrial carcinoma In the Chinese Population.OncologyObstetrics & GynecologySCI(E)6ARTICLE4651-6561
Hydroponics and alternative forms of agriculture:opportunities from nanotechnology
Globally, soil quality is decreasing, putting additional pressure on our food system. As soil degradation continues and freshwater supplies become scarce, development of farming approaches that use both land and water more efficiently and productively to grow food is essential. This need has created a niche for scientists and farmers to develop techniques to improve either land productivity or to use alternative agricultural techniques. Twenty four percent of the UK farmers now employ some form of precision farming, whereby a range of sensors, drones, or satellite imagery is used in order to generate data about the growing crop’s specific needs and requirements in terms of water, fertilization, or other inputs. Precision farming can be employed through a range of different techniques which will be discussed further in this chapter.</p
