Vladimir Burtsev and the Russian revolutionary emigration: surveillance of foreign political refugees in London, 1891-1905.
PhDThe thesis describes the early life in emigration of the Russian revolutionary, historian
and radical journalist Vladimir L'vovich Burtsev (17/29 November 1862 - 21 August
1942). Particular emphasis is placed on the nature and extent of the police
surveillance of Burtsev and the émigré community in Europe during the period. The
relationship between the Criminal Investigation Department of London's
Metropolitan Police and their Russian counterparts in Europe - the Zagranichnaia
agentura, ('Foreign Agency') - is examined in detail.
Burtsev's biography has great contemporary relevance, unfolding, as it does, in an
atmosphere of increasing anxiety in Britain (both governmental and non-official)
about growing numbers of foreign anarchists, terrorists, and `aliens' in general (which
would lead, in due course, to the passing of the 1905 Aliens Act) and the increasingly
interventionist police methods of the era. The thesis describes Burtsev's relationship
with the émigré community and its British supporters, examines his (at times extreme)
political views and reviews the radical journalism which led to his trial and
imprisonment in 1898. This, the `Burtsev affair', signalled a major shift in British
government policy towards political refugees on the one hand and to international
counter-terrorist co-operation on the other and it is one of the aims of this thesis to
detail the reasons for these changes
Algorithms for approximate calculation of the minimum of a convex function from its values
The paper deals with a numerical minimization problem for a convex function defined on a convex n-dimensional domain and continuous (but not necessarily smooth). The values of the function can be calculated at any given point. It is required to find the minimum with desired accuracy. A new algorithm for solving this problem is presented, whose computational complexity as n â â is considerably less than that of similar algorithms known to the author. In fact, the complexity is improved from Cn 7 ln 2(n + 1) [4] to Cn 2 ln(n + 1). ©1996 Plenum Publishing Corporation
The concepts essence and hypostasis in papers of Vladimir Lossky and works of Cappadocian philosophers
This article presents the problem of different concepts correlation of essence and hypostasis, in works of Cappadocian philosophers (Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa) and papers of Vladimir Lossky. The author gives definitions to concepts and compares ways of their use by the Cappadocian Fathers and Vladimir Lossky. On the basis of it, the author makes a conclusion of the degree of personality concept correlation to theological grounds the Eastern Christian tradition.
The contemporary orthodox theologian Vladimir N. Lossky (1903-1958) made apophatism or negative theology a feature of his theology, according to Eastern Christian approaches. His radicalism in this regard has been widely criticized. In this paper, we first expose the apophatism of the author studied. In this sense, we discover apophatism as a theological attitude typical of orthodox theology that is manifested in the various aspects of Christian life (the dogma of the Trinity, the dogma of divine energies, the procession of the Holy Spirit, anthropology, liturgy, icons). In a second part of the study, we go through the different contributions that make up the critical reception of Losskian apophatism (Tyszkiewicz, Florovsky, Williams, Stăniloae, Zizioulas, Rogobete, Bernardi, Prosperi, Papanikolau, Nichols, Clément), to conclude by offering our own opinion on the matter.
'Conventions are conventions.....’: Some thoughts about the techniques of direction and misdirection – with particular reference to genre features - in the novels of Vladimir Nabokov, and an assessment of their intentions and effects.
The thesis deals with the development of Nabokov's treatment of a number of the more common routes and courses which are traditionally supplied by the author to ease the passage of the reader through fiction. It attempts to show how these marked paths and familiar signposts - 'melodrama,' 'totalitarian novel,' 'biography,' 'erotic confession,' 'critical edition,' 'family chronicle, 'mystery story,' and 'autobiographical confession' - emerge in the books as equally misguiding and misguided. The satisfactory application of such labels is demonstrated as becoming progressively more difficult as the novels proceed, with a rising degree of sophistication, to incorporate distinctive combinations of genre features usually considered as mutually exclusive. Further inquiries into the manner of fictional orientation and location encouraged by this regular disappointment of apparently familiar leads and landmarks, however, is increasingly seen to disclose the underlying procedures and desires of the reader to place and confine narrative. The manner in which Nabokov's reader is repeatedly obliged to return to a non-metaphorical 'first base' by way of these false trails, which seemingly point towards an authoritative text, and there to re-examine his own imaginative input is also traced..... Dull work recounting all this bores me to death. But yearn as I may to reach the crucial point quickly, a few preliminary explanations seem necessary

Genèse de la popularité de Vladimir Poutine
Genesis of Vladimir Putin’s popularity.
Starting with Crimea annexation by Russia, one witnesses a soaring support of the Russian population for President Putin. In order to explain this massive and enthusiastic allegiance to Vladimir Putin, one must explore what happened during Perestroika and Boris Yeltsin’s presidency. The author shows that both Perestroika and Yeltsin's rule were two different “ revolutions from above ” : the first one, that of Mikhail Gorbachev, was a democratic revolution supported by the progressive part of intelligentsia and (for quite different reasons) by a part of young Party and Komsomol functionaries ; the second one, that of Boris Yeltsin, was a liberal revolution imposed by new business elites and actively supported by Western liberals. Both revolutions had no longlasting support by general population, which remained unreformed and deeply “ sovietˮ. One should always keep in mind that during Yeltsin’s presidency State Duma was continuously dominated by communists . In fact , it was very smart Putin's tactics, to get support from the majority of unreformed population rather than from elites. Skilfully, Putin used a mix of nationalist and communist rhetoric (Soviet nostalgia plus imperialist values which remained intact since the end of Soviet era ) but without real nationalists or communists. During Boris Yeltsin’s reelection campaign in 1996, communists have been vilified, and could never recover from this denigration campaign, paving thus the way to Putin’s triumph.Ackerman Galia. Travel Marketing: Industry Relationships and Benefits
In the discussion - Travel Marketing: Industry Relationships and Benefits - by Andrew Vladimir, Visiting Assistant Professor, School of Hospitality Management at Florida International University, the author initially states: “A symbiotic relationship exists among the various segments of the travel and tourism industry. The author has solicited the thinking of 37experts and leaders in the field in a book dealing with these relationships and how they can be developed to benefit the industry. This article provides some salient points from those contributors.”
This article could be considered a primer on networking for the hospitality industry. It has everything to do with marketing and the relationships between varied systems in the field of travel and tourism. Vladimir points to instances of success and failure in marketing for the industry at large. And there are points of view from thirty-seven contributing sources here.
“Miami Beach remains a fitting example of a leisure product that has been unable to get its act together,” Vladimir shares a view. “There are some first class hotels, a few good restaurants, alluring beaches, and a splendid convention center, but there is no synergism between them, no real affinity, and so while visitors admire the Fontainebleau Hilton and enjoy the food at Joe\u27s Stone Crabs, the reputation of Miami Beach as a resort remains sullied,” the author makes a point.
In describing cohesiveness between exclusive systems, Vladimir says, “If each system can get a better understanding of the inner workings of neighboring related systems, each will ultimately be more successful in achieving its goals.”
The article is suggesting that exclusive systems aren’t really exclusive at all; or at least they shouldn’t be. In a word – competition – drives the market, and in order for a property to stay afloat, aggressive marketing integrated with all attendant resources is crucial.
“Tisch [Preston Robert Tisch, currently – at the time of this writing - the Postmaster General of the United States and formerly president of Lowe’s Hotels and the New York Visitors and Convention Bureau], in talking about the need for aggressive marketing says: “Never...ever...take anything for granted. Never...not for a moment...think that any product or any place will survive strictly on its own merits.”
Vladimir not only sources several knowledgeable representatives in the field of hospitality and tourism, but he also links elements as disparate as real estate, car rental, cruise and airlines, travel agencies and traveler profiles to illustrate his points on marketing integration.
In closing, Vladimir quotes the Honorable Donna Tuttle, Undersecretary of Commerce for Travel and Tourism, “Uniting the components of this industry in an effective marketing coalition that can compete on an equal footing with often publicly-owned foreign tourism conglomerates and multi-national consortia must be a high priority as the United States struggles to maintain and expand its share of a rapidly changing global market.
Scalar multiplet recombination at large N and holography
We consider the coupling of a free scalar to a single-trace operator of a large N CFT in d dimensions. This is equivalent to a double-trace deformation coupling two primary operators of the CFT, in the limit when one of the two saturates the unitarity bound. At leading order, the RG-flow has a non-trivial fixed point where multiplets recombine. We show this phenomenon in field theory, and provide the holographic dual description. Free scalars correspond to singleton representations of the AdS algebra. The double-trace interaction is mapped to a boundary condition mixing the singleton with the bulk field dual to the single-trace operator. In the IR, the singleton and the bulk scalar merge, providing just one long representation of the AdS algebra. © 2016, The Author(s)
Methods of trichlorosilane synthesis for polycrystalline silicon production. Part 1: Direct synthesis
Novel technical solutions and ideas for increasing the yield of solar and semiconductor grade polycrystalline silicon processes have been analyzed. The predominant polycrystalline silicon technology is currently still the Siemens process including the conversion of technical grade silicon (synthesized by carbon-thermal reduction of quartzites) to trichlorosilane followed by rectification and hydrogen reduction. The cost of product silicon can be cut down by reducing the trichlorosilane synthesis costs through process and equipment improvement. Advantages, drawbacks and production cost reduction methods have been considered with respect to four common trichlorosilane synthesis processes: hydrogen chloride exposure of technical grade silicon (direct chlorination, DC), homogeneous hydration of tetrachlorosilane (conversion), tetrachlorosilane and hydrogen exposure of silicon (hydro chlorination silicon, HC), and catalyzed tetrachlorosilane and dichlorosilane reaction (redistribution of anti-disproportioning reaction). These processes remain in use and are permanently improved. Catalytic processes play an important role on silicon surface, and understanding their mechanisms can help find novel applications and obtain new results. It has been noted that indispensable components of various equipment and process designs are recycling steps and combined processes including active distillation. They provide for the most complete utilization of raw trichlorosilane, increase the process yield and cut down silicon cost
