Characterization Of A New Stationary Phase Based On Microwave Immobilized Polybutadiene On Titanium Oxide-modified Silica

    No full text
Titanium oxide-modified silica was prepared by reaction of silica with titanium tetrabutoxide and then was used as support in the preparation of stationary phases with self-immobilized polybutadiene (PBD) and PBD immobilized through microwave radiation. Chromatographic performance of the stationary phases was evaluated in terms of the efficiency (plates/m), asymmetry (A s), retention factor (k) and resolution (Rs) of two standard sample mixtures, one of then containing the basic compound N,N-dimethylaniline. A microwave irradiation of 30 min at 520 W gave the best efficiency (86,500 N m-1), greater than that of a 6-day self immobilized phase (69,500 N m-1). Self-immobilized stationary phases prepared with bare silica were also studied for comparison. These resulted in lower chromatographic performance, 43,800 N m-1, when compared to the self-immobilized phase prepared with titanized silica. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Preparation Of A Polybutadiene Stationary Phase Immobilized By γ Radiation For Reversed-phase High-performance Liquid Chromatography

    No full text
Polybutadiene (PBD) has been immobilized on HPLC silica by γ radiation doses in the range from 5 to 180 kGy. Columns prepared from these reversed-phase materials, as well as from similar non-irradiated materials, were tested with standard sample mixtures and characterized by elemental analysis (% C) and infrared spectroscopy. A low dose of 5 kGy is sufficient to produce a layer of immobilized PBD which functions as an efficient and stable stationary phase. Higher doses give thicker immobilized layers having less favorable chromatographic properties. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Structure Of The Shrub-arboreal Component Of An Atlantic Forest Fragment On A Hillock In The Central Lowland Of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

    No full text
The present study describes and evaluates the horizontal and vertical structures of a lowland forest fragment on a hillock in the municipality of Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (22°31'56"S and 42°20'46"W). Twenty plots (10×2m) totaling 0.5ha were laid out following the slope grade using DBH≥5cm as the inclusion criterion. A total of 734 individuals were encountered, yielding a total density of 1468 ind./ha and a total basal area of 10783m2. The richness values (129 species/41 families), Shannon-Wiener diversity (4.22) and equitability (0.87) indices indicated an accentuated floristic heterogeneity and low ecological dominance. Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae showed the greatest species richness, corroborating other studies that indicated these species as the most representative of Atlantic Forest areas in southeastern Brazil. The species with the greatest importance values (VI) were Aparisthmium cordatum, Guapira opposita, Lacistema pubescens, Xylopia sericea, Tapirira guianensis and Piptocarpha macropoda. The high diversity observed was influenced by earlier anthropogenic actions and by the current successional stage. The forest fragment studied demonstrated closer floristic similarity to areas inventoried in a close-by biological reserve than to fragments dispersed throughout the coastal plain. Similarities in soil type, degree of soil saturation and use-history of forest resources all support these relationships. The fragmented physiognomy of the central lowland in this region and the use-history of the landscape make these small remnant forest areas important in terms of establishing strategies for landscape restoration and species conservation.344232239An update of the Angiosperm Phytogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG II (2003) Bot. Evaluation Of The Applicability And The Stability Of A C18 Stationary Phase Containing Embedded Urea Groups

    No full text
Chromatographic evaluations of a new C18 urea phase in 150×3.9 mm HPLC columns, involving the separation of different test mixtures, indicate good performance for both polar and basic compounds when compared with a commercial C18 reversed phase and also show promising results for the separation of some herbicides. An aging study was performed by passing a potassium phosphate mobile phase buffered at pH 7 through 50×3.9 mm HPLC columns. The column stability was evaluated by means of the chromatographic parameters obtained for the separation of some compounds of the Neue test mixture, containing apolar, polar and highly basic analytes. The applicability of the new C18 urea phase was evaluated with a herbicide mixture. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Preparation And Characterization Of A New Hplc C18 Reversed Phase Containing Thiocarbamate Groups

    No full text
A HPLC stationary phase that possesses an internal thiocarbamate functional group is described. The new C18-thiocarbamate silane was synthesized by the reaction of a trifunctional alkoxysilane with a mercaptan. The silylant agent was bonded to silica (5 μm) and the new stationary phase was then endcapped. Surface characteristics of the packing before and after chemical modification with HMDS and TMCS were determined by different physico-chemical methods, such as elemental analysis and infrared and solid-state 13C and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Chromatographic properties of the C18-thiocarbamate silica were evaluated under reversed phase conditions by separation of four different test mixtures that including compounds from the Engelhardt, Tanaka, and Neue test mixtures. Chromatographic evaluations of the C18-thiocarbamate phase show promising results for the separation of basic analytes. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Multi-agent model predictive control for transportation networks: Serial versus parallel schemes

    No full text
We consider the control of large-scale transportation networks, like road traffic networks, power distribution networks, water distribution networks, etc. Control of these networks is often not possible from a single point by a single intelligent control agent; instead control has to be performed using multiple intelligent agents. We consider multi-agent control schemes in which each agent employs a model-based predictive control approach. Coordination between the agents is used to improve decision making. This coordination can be in the form of parallel or serial schemes. We propose a novel serial coordination scheme based on Lagrange theory and compare this with an existing parallel scheme. Experiments by means of simulations on a particular type of transportation network, viz., an electric power network, illustrate the performance of both schemes. It is shown that the serial scheme has preferable properties compared to the parallel scheme in terms of the convergence speed and the quality of the solution. Optimization of condition-based asset management using a predictive health model

    No full text
In this paper, a model predictive framework is used to optimize the operation and maintenance actions of power system equipment based on the predicted health sate of this equipment. In particular, this framework is used to predict the health state of transformers based on their usage. The health state of a transformer is hereby given by the hot-spot temperature of the paper insulation of the transformer and is predicted using the planned loading of the transformer. The actual loading of the transformer is subsequently optimized using these predictions. If you want to cite this report, please use the following reference instead: G. Bajracharya, T.
