Simple modification of macroporous alumina supports for the fabrication of dense NaA zeolite coatings: Interplay of electrostatic and chemical interactions

Kapteijn, FreekContinuous thin zeolite NaA films have been synthesized on macroporous alpha-alumina supports subjected to a simple pretreatment and without seeding. By modifying the supports with a cationic polymer and even with glucose or polyethylene glycol and subsequent calcination at 673 K, a substantial improvement in terms of layer continuity and crystal intergrowth is observed compared to coatings prepared on unmodified supports. We attribute this positive effect to a fine interplay between the presence of a monolayer formed by carbon-oxygen species, mainly of the carboxylic type, on top of the calcined supports and to the negative net charge of the surface under synthesis conditions. The resulting double layer of solvated Na(+) ions on the support would act as nucleation promoter and formation of the NaA thin film. This new method presents several advantages and may form the basis to scale up membrane synthesis in view of the simple and cheap pretreatment together with the elimination of pre-seeding steps. Application of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier integrity

The application of contrast-enhanced MRI in the assessment of blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier integrity. Choroid plexus epithelial cells form a barrier that enables active, bidirectional exchange between the blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), known as the blood-CSF barrier (BCSFB). Through its involvement in CSF composition, the BCSFB maintains homeostasis in the central nervous system. While the relation between blood-brain barrier disruption, aging and neurodegeneration is extensively studied using contrast-enhanced MRI, applying this technique to investigate BCSFB disruption in age-related neurodegeneration has received little attention. This review provides an overview of the current status of contrast-enhanced MRI to assess BCSFB permeability. Post-contrast ventricular gadolinium enhancement has been used to indicate BCSFB permeability. Moreover, new techniques highly sensitive to low gadolinium concentrations in the CSF, for instance heavily T2-weighted imaging with cerebrospinal fluid suppression, seem promising. Also, attempts are made at using other contrast agents, such as manganese ions or very small superparamagnetic iron oxide particles, that seem to be cleared from the brain at the choroid plexus. Advancing and applying new developments such as these could progress the assessment of BCSFB integrity.</p
Outremização e revide de colonizado e colonizador em The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee (1974), de J. M. Coetzee

Coetzee, intitulada The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee, à luz da teoria pós-colonial, com enfoque nas teorias da outremização e do revide. A novela narra, em três versões, a expedição do colonizador holandês Jacobus Coetzee às desconhecidas terras do interior da África do Sul, no século XVIII. A análise das diferenças entre as três versões sobre os mesmos fatos revela que cada um escreve impregnado por diferentes ideologias, imputando, assim, subjetividade e, conseqüentemente, ficcionalidade aos eventos históricos narrados. A teoria da outremização revela as estratégias utilizadas para outremizar os sujeitos coloniais, o uso de estereótipos degradantes para subjugá-los e justificar a usurpação das terras. A teoria do revide revela o modo como os sujeitos coloniais revidam, através da mímica, da paródia, da cortesia dissimulada, sem violência, em oposição à maneira como o europeu vinga-se ao ser descentralizado, utilizando meios violentos para reassumir a posição de sujeito perdida em favor dos sujeitos coloniais. Conclui-se que os sujeitos coloniais eram autônomos antes da chegada do europeu, que os objetifica, que modifica drasticamente a realidade local. Nota-se também que para o colonizador, a própria descentralização é inaceitável, por isso ele revida violentamente ao perder a posição de sujeito. Coetzee, called The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee, is provided by post-colonial theory, focusing on the theory of alterity and intervention. In its three versions the novella narrates the fictional expedition of Jacobus Coetzee, a Dutch farmer and explorer, to the unknown hinterland of 18th century South Africa. An analysis of the three versions on the same event reveals that each one has been written from different ideologies underpinning subjectivity and ficcionality in the narrated historical events. The alterity theory reveals the strategies used to other the colonized subjects and the degrading stereotypes employed to subject the colonized and usurp their land. The intervention theory reveals the manner the colonial subjects react through mimicry, parody and sly civility, albeit without violence, against the European colonizer. So that he may reinstate himself in the position of subject, the latter’s reaction on being decentralized is always limited to violence and vengeance. Results show that the colonial subjects were indeed autonomous before the arrival of Europeans who objectified them and drastically changed their lives and their environment. Moreover, the violence used by the colonizers shows their radical refusal of decentralization and the loss of their subject status. Colonial encounters always smack of tragedy192 f,

Circulating N-Acetylaspartate does not track brain NAA concentrations, cognitive function or features of small vessel disease in humans
N-acetylaspartate (NAA) is the second most abundant metabolite in the human brain; although it is assumed to be a proxy for a neuronal marker, its function is not fully elucidated. NAA is also detectable in plasma, but its relation to cerebral NAA levels, cognitive performance, or features of cerebral disease has not been investigated. To study whether circulating NAA tracks cerebral NAA levels, and whether circulating NAA correlates with cognitive function and features of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). Two datasets were analyzed. In dataset 1, structural MRI was acquired in 533 subjects to assess four features of cerebral SVD. Cognitive function was evaluated with standardized test scores (N = 824). In dataset 2, brain (1)H-MRS from the occipital region was acquired (N = 49). In all subjects, fasting circulating NAA was measured with mass spectrometry. Dataset 1: in univariate and adjusted for confounders models, we found no correlation between circulating NAA and the examined features of cerebral SVD. In univariate analysis, circulating NAA levels were associated inversely with the speed in information processing and the executive function score, however these associations were lost after accounting for confounders. In line with the negative findings of dataset 1, in dataset 2 there was no correlation between circulating and central NAA or total NAA levels. This study indicates that circulating NAA levels do not reflect central (occipital) NAA levels, cognitive function, or cerebral small vessel disease in man
Noninvasive assessment of tumor microenvironment using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and 18F-fluoromisonidazole positron emission tomography imaging in neck nodal metastases
PURPOSE: To assess noninvasively the tumor microenvironment of neck nodal metastases in patients with head-and-neck cancer by investigating the relationship between tumor perfusion measured using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and hypoxia measured by (18)F-fluoromisonidazole ((18)F-FMISO) positron emission tomography (PET). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirteen newly diagnosed head-and-neck cancer patients with metastatic neck nodes underwent DCE-MRI and (18)F-FMISO PET imaging before chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The matched regions of interests from both modalities were analyzed. To examine the correlations between DCE-MRI parameters and standard uptake value (SUV) measurements from (18)F-FMISO PET, the nonparametric Spearman correlation coefficient was calculated. Furthermore, DCE-MRI parameters were compared between nodes with (18)F-FMISO uptake and nodes with no (18)F-FMISO uptake using Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS: For the 13 patients, a total of 18 nodes were analyzed. The nodal size strongly correlated with the (18)F-FMISO SUV (rho = 0.74, p < 0.001). There was a strong negative correlation between the median k(ep) (redistribution rate constant) value (rho = -0.58, p = 0.042) and the (18)F-FMISO SUV. Hypoxic nodes (moderate to severe (18)F-FMISO uptake) had significantly lower median K(trans) (volume transfer constant) (p = 0.049) and median k(ep) (p = 0.027) values than did nonhypoxic nodes (no (18)F-FMISO uptake). CONCLUSION: This initial evaluation of the preliminary results support the hypothesis that in metastatic neck lymph nodes, hypoxic nodes are poorly perfused (i.e., have significantly lower K(trans) and k(ep) values) compared with nonhypoxic nodes
