    The Case for Nonhuman Rights

    No full text
Most of the world is nonhuman and everything we do affects them, and there are thousands of times more of them than there are of us. If we have rights and we’re in the minority, shouldn’t animals as well? On the next episode of Why?, we’ll dive into the world of animal ethics, exploring the legal, political, and moral implications of acknowledging that animals suffer. Jeff Sebo is a Clinical Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, and Affiliated Professor of Bioethics, Medical Ethics, Philosophy, and Law at New York University. He is the author, most recently, of Saving Animals, Saving Ourselves.https://commons.und.edu/why-radio-archive/1166/thumbnail.jp

O principal referencial teórico abordado foi fundamentado nas reflexões de Gérard Genette (2009) e Marie-Hèléne C. Torres (2011).Abstract: The main objective of this work is to examine the paratextual elements in twelve anthologies of the French author Guy de Maupassant's short stories, translated and published in the 20th and 21st centuries in Brazil, in order to disclose how the writer and his oeuvre are presented to the Brazilian reader, through the use of paratexts. I analysed only the translated anthologies with short stories from the author himself; anthologies that had other authors as well were not considered. The main theoretical framework was based on the reflections of Gérard Genette (2009) and Marie-Hèléne C. Torres (2011)

"Sebo bueno, indio muerto": the structure of an andean belief. The author analyses the pishtaco belief by way of his structural position in the Andean culture and its history. The characteristics of the mythical figure of the Andean fat collector are such that it cannot be considered as a deity. His indigenous meaning derives, first and foremost, from the symbolic function of fat in prehispanic and contemporary Andean cultures while his significance in colonial history is tied both to the practical properties of human fat in seventeenth-century European medicine, and to ethnographic data from Spain. Finally, his sacrificial value illuminates the articulation of these two meanings, reveling the structure of the belief."Sebo bueno, indio muerto" : la structure d'une croyance andine. Optimum Currency Areas theory and the Slovak suitability for the euro adoption

    No full text
This paper tests the present readiness of Slovakia to join the European Monetary Union (EMU) based on the classical Optimum Currency Area criteria, the degree of trade intensity and business cycle synchronization. The results do not fully confirm the hypothesis that Slovakia already constitutes an optimum monetary union with the rest of the EMU countries mainly the labour mobility is largely ineffective as adjustment mechanism. But, Slovakia is a open economy, its degree of trade integration is the highest among the Central and Eastern European countries and its economic and production structures are quite similar to the intra-EMU average. Moreover, Slovakia's business cycle appears at least as highly synchronized with the EMU''s one as some present, small and peripheral EMU member countries. This would indicate that this country is equally a suitable candidate for the EMU membership and that the Euro adoption should not increase the likelihood of asymmetric shocks.

From the short story Boule de Suif, written by Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), we intend to present the way the author works with two narrative levels, namely: the first level, in which he narrates a story in the context of the Franco-Prussian War in the 19th century, and the second level, in which the author takes us back to the novelized poem of oral tradition, entitled Il était un petit navire. Such narrative, which is mentioned only in one sentence, is configured as a kind of ruin or fragment that supports the surface or first-level structured narrative. As a method of analysis, considering that we have two narrative structures, we opted for the comparative method between the narrative structures. Thus, we concluded that Ricardo Piglia’s thesis is confirmed in that every tale always tells two stories, as well as recognizes the importance of the ruin or fragment as a noble material for literary creation, as noted by Walter Benjamin on its importance in the baroque creation.
