Linguistic practice on contemporary Jordanian radio: publics and participation

No full text
Contemporary studies of media Arabic often pass over issues of media form and the broader relevance of language use. The present thesis addresses these issues directly by examining the language used in Jordanian non-government radio programmes. It examines recordings and transcriptions of a range of programme genres – primarily, morning talk shows and “service programmes” (barāmiž ḳadamātiyya), and Islamic advice programmes, both of which feature significant audience input via call-ins. The data are examined through an interpretive form of discourse analysis, drawing on linguistic anthropological theory that analyses language as a form of performance, through comparison of radio programmes as ‘units of interaction.’ This is supported by sociolinguistic data obtained from the recordings, including phoneme frequency analysis, in addition to the author’s experience of 6 months of fieldwork in Jordan in 2014-15. The analysis focuses on four major themes: (1) the influence of media context, specifically the sonic exclusivity and temporal evanescence of radio, on language use, as well as the impact of digital media; (2) the indexicality of certain locally salient sociolinguistic variables, and the use to which they are put in radio talk; (3) the role of language in constructing the identity, or persona, of broadcasters; and (4) the role of language in constructing and validating authoritative discourse, in particular that of Islamic texts and scripture in religious programming. Through its analysis of these themes, using selected recording excerpts as demonstrative case studies, this thesis shows that specific strategies of Arabic use in the radio setting crucially affect both the publics – the addressed audiences – of radio talk, as well as the frameworks of participation in this talk – how and to what extent broadcasters and members of the public can participate in mediated discourse. The results demonstrate the unique value of an interpretive study of linguistic performance for highlighting broader social issues, including the inclusion and exclusion of particular segments of the society through linguistic strategies – Jordanians versus non-Jordanians, Ammanis versus non-Ammanis, and pious Muslims versus non-believers; and the use of language to reassert, or occasionally challenge, dominant ideologies and discourses, such as those of gender, nationalism, and religion. This study thus contributes an examination of contemporary Jordanian non-government radio language in its social and political context – something which has not been attempted before, and which provides important insights regarding both the nature of contemporary Arabic media language and its broader social and cultural import

Fusing Dexterity and Perception for Soft Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery: What We Learnt from STIFF-FLOP

No full text
In recent years we have seen tremendous progress in the development of robotic solutions for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Indeed, a number of robot-assisted MIS systems have been developed to product level and are now well-established clinical tools; Intuitive Surgical’s very successful da Vinci Surgical System a prime example. The majority of these surgical systems are based on the traditional rigid-component robot design that was instrumental in the third industrial revolution—especially within the manufacturing sector. However, the use of this approach for surgical procedures on or around soft tissue has come under increasing criticism. The dangers of operating with a robot made from rigid components both near and within a patient are considerable. The EU project STIFF-FLOP, arguably the first large-scale research programme on soft robots for MIS, signalled the start of a concerted effort among researchers to investigate this area more comprehensively. While soft robots have many advantages over their rigid-component counterparts, among them high compliance and increased dexterity, they also bring their own specific challenges when interacting with the environment, such as the need to integrate sensors (which also need to be soft) that can determine the robot’s position and orientation (pose). In this study, the challenges of sensor integration are explored, while keeping the surgeon’s perspective at the forefront of ourdiscussion. The paper critically explores a range of methods, predominantly those developed during the EU project STIFF-FLOP, that facilitate the embedding of soft sensors into articulate soft robot structures using flexible, optics-based lightguides. We examine different optics-based approaches to pose perception in a minimally invasive surgery settings, and methods of integration are also discussed

Transforming Obscenity into the Sublime: Hidden Sexuality in Rusva's Umra'o Jan Ada

At the end of the 19th century Muhammad Hadi Rusva had hardly any predecessors or indigenous prototypes on which to model his famous novel Umrao Jan Ada. The first tentative novelistic experiments in Urdu were inspired substantially by Victorian English prose, especially sensational or romance fiction by authors like W.M. Reynolds, Marie Corelli or F. Marion Crawford, which in the second half of the 19th century became extremely popular and vastly appreciated among Indian readers. Rusva was well conversant with such literature and even translated some of it into Urdu, and no doubt this was one of his sources of inspiration. But he was also well-versed in Urdu, Persian and Arabic and had received a classical schooling in various fields including literature; hence he was familiar with traditional literary means and conventions allowing Urdu authors to avoid openly expressing erotic feelings, and to write about love, lust and desire in a veiled and metaphorical manner. Drawing from all these resources, partly foreign and partly indigenous, Rusva created a masterly novel portraying and exploring the complexity of sex workers’ lives and work long before feminist discourse took these up. But he tackles sexuality and male-female relations in a manner often leaving the issues oblique and imperceptible on the surface, though, a reader aware of the relevant cultural and linguistic idiom is able to look behind the veil and perceive matters in their appropriate, often even obscene dimension. Rusva’s book thus seems an early harbinger of the controversy regarding obscenity in Urdu literature, which burst into full force in the 1940s. This article analyses the hidden and the overt in Rusva’s Umrao Jan Ada. It discusses the literary and linguistic techniques and tools used to depict what was “shameful” according to the prevalent morality and to speak about what according to this should have remained unsaid

Yugoslavia, packaging design then and now

Ti dejavniki so tehnologija in njen razvoj, materiali, politika, odnos do oblikovalca itd. The packaging of a product, in our case food packaging, plays an important role in the present day. In a mountain of products that more or less serve the same purpose, producers compete to get consumers to reach for theirs. In the middle of the last century, when the market was limited, there was no need for the battle that exists today. For this reason, throughout the thesis I explore the different factors that influenced packaging design in the past and the factors that influence it today. These factors are technology and its development, materials, politics, attitudes towards the designer, etc. In the theoretical part, I focus on three manufacturers from the former Yugoslavia, and put under the magnifying glass one iconic product that they still produce today. In the practical part, I am working on the redesign of two iconic packages, which I also discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis. Based on what I have researched, I present two new solutions where I try to improve the user experience, to maintain the visual language in relation to the history of the product and to take a sustainable approach

The excessive focus on entertainment in the content of the modern mass media has become the subject of academic reflection in Poland over the last decade. In the West this issue has been discussed for at least thirty years. Out of the various concepts that serve the purpose of describing and analyzing the focus on entertainment in the mass media the author focuses on the concept of infotainment, borrowed from American English; the meaning and scope of this concept in academic and journalistic texts is analyzed. It is indicated that the concept has a limited explanatory value when taken over without its cultural and linguistic context, and it is particularly useless as the name of a genre, used instead of the news. Discussing contemporary academic reflections on the focus on entertainment in the mass media and their content, three main currents are indicated and briefly described: the functional, historical and critically-discursive; the issue of the focus on entertainment of professional journalists is also addressed. The excessive focus on entertainment in the content of the modern mass media has become the subject of academic reflection in Poland over the last decade. Flood Risk Assessments for Small Catchments Under Climate Change—How Can Scotland Improve Its Policy for Enhanced Flood Resilience and Preparedness

No full text
\ua9 2025 The Author(s). Journal of Flood Risk Management published by Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Flood risk assessments (FRAs) are essential tools in Scottish planning policy to identify and minimise flood risk in new planning applications. Most FRAs in Scotland are performed in (very) small (< 50km2) < 100km2 catchments, particularly vulnerable to increases in rainfall intensity due to climate change. This study provides a historical overview of the literature used as guidance in FRAs in Scotland and then focuses on their application in smaller catchments, addressing three areas: understanding the different physical processes in smaller catchments, their representation within the guidelines and how these guidelines are applied in practice. Our results highlight the need to move beyond simple mathematical and hydrological methods for FRAs. We find that small catchments\u27 physical processes are not adequately represented in current methods, leading to higher biases and uncertainties in modelling. When applied in practice, these techniques are often used unconventionally for the fulfilment of established guidelines. Finally, climate change science implementation into guidance also needs refinement, with current regulations lacking a sound scientific basis, particularly for smaller catchments. We underscore the need for testing and application of innovative solutions found in academia and utilisation of additional data to provide improved methods for FRAs in smaller catchments, particularly under climate change

V diplomskem delu sem oblikovala in ilustrirala pesniško zbirko Subiluzija pisatelja Žiga X-a Gombača. In my thesis, I designed and illustrated the poetry collection Subiluzija by the author Žiga X Gombač. In the theoretical part, I researched the relationship between illustration and text in poetry and defined the illustration style is most suitable for describing the abstract content that appears in the poetry collection Subiluzija. I analysed three works of art and based on this analysis, justified the use of abstract illustration alongside the text. In the practical part of the diploma thesis, I illustrated the poetry collection, explained the illustration technique used, described the process of choosing motifs and researched the relationship between poetry and text in book form. In the book design process, I treated the book as a physical object and justified my choice of font, layout of the grid and the way the book was printed and bound
