    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Stability of flat glass panels under combined in-plane compression and shear

    The frequent use of structural glass elements, as well as the lack of extended standardized rules for designers, gradually increased the interesting of scientists and researchers in the analysis of structural behaviours associated to various combinations of boundary and loading conditions. Buckling failure certainly represents one of the most crucial conditions of collapse for structural glass panels. In the paper, the buckling response of simply supported glass panels subjected to combined in-plane compressive and edgewise shearing forces is investigated. Based on large series of numerical incremental simulations, the effects of loading ratios, imperfection shapes, slenderness ratios and glass types on their response are highlighted. At last, a normalized domain is proposed for their stability check

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Welcome at Challenging Glass! At this 9th edition of the conference, we are thrilled to welcome no less than 120 presentations - a record since the first edition of this international event back in 2008. Ever since, we have been keeping up our high standards in sharing knowledge, science and best practices on glass engineering and design. Thanks to the great work of bright authors and sharp reviewers, that is not different this time. What actually ís different this edition, is the introduction of a Glass Circularity Debate. We have seen several trends come and go over the past years, but the importance of circular design is to stay! Therefore, on top of the regular technical sessions on the topic, we bring five speakers to the stage who will pitch their views on the circular use of glass and discuss it with each other and the audience. You are warmly invited to actively participate! Furthermore, we are happy to welcome no less than five top-notch keynote speakers. The first keynote will focus on the Mirage project and will be delivered jointly by Dr Faidra Oikonomopoulou, Dr Telesilla Bristogianni and Mr Alexandros Cannas. The second keynote will be presented by Dr Peter Zoon, who will explain how glass plays an important role in crime scene investigations. It promises to be a criminal talk! Last but not least, Dr Corentin Fivet will share his work on new design paradigms for reuse during his closing plenary lecture. During the conference you will be able to retrieve all abstracts and papers, but also presenter details and programme updates with our conference app. After the conference, all papers will be available online, either through our online proceedings platform or through the peer-reviewed journal Glass Structures & Engineering (SpringerNature).     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    A 12 meters long segmented, post-tensioned steel-glass beam (TVT Gamma)

    The paper deals with the construction, the numerical modelling and the experimental investigation of an innovative hybrid steel-glass beam, spanning over 12 meterswhose constructional concept, patented by M. Froli for the University of Pisa, has the basic design aim to avoid or reduce tensile stresses in glass in order to drastically delay the initiation and propagation of cracks which afflicts traditional glass beams and to ensure at the same time ductility and high stiffness. After encouraging theoretical predictions and tests performed on a 3.33 meters spanned prototype (TVT Beta), the 12.00 meters spanned prototype TVT Gamma has been designed, built and submitted to a programme of experimental tests. The TVT Gamma prototype has a height of 1079 mm and a width of 600 mm. It is composed by two vertical glazed twin curtains reciprocally distant 600mm, and by a upper horizontal glass curtain. Each vertical curtain is composed by 19 triangular equilateral laminated glass panels while the top horizontal curtain is made by 10 rectangular laminated glass panels. The post-tension system consists of diagonal and longitudinal steel bars of different diameters disposed following a Warren scheme in the vertical curtains. The connection between steel knots and rounded vertexes of the glass panes is exerted just by means of mono-lateral contact pressures activated by post-tensioned diagonals and longitudinal steel bars. All the glass panels are therefore free from holes and gluing. The prototype has been submitted to a test programme comprising a dynamic characterization and a oligo-cyclical static loading increased up to collapse and performed on a four-point bending scheme. Aim of the tests was to assess the dynamic, the low cycles static behaviour as well as the failure and post-failure behaviour of the prototype and to compare them with numerical predictions. The cyclical static tests extended up to collapse evidenced the permanence of the prototype within its elastic domain under service cyclic loading and exhibited at collapse large ductile displacements as consequence of the tensile steel bars yielding that preceded the buckling of a compressed triangular glass pane, thus completely confirming the preliminary numerical predictions

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
