No full textJames B. Finley was born in North Carolina in 1781, but grew up in Ohio and Kentucky. He studied medicine and literature before becoming a Methodist preacher. During his career he spent the majority of his mission work with the Wyandot Indians of Upper Sandusky. Finley also served as the chaplain at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, from 1846 to 1849. He was instrumental in prison reform, including a library program and the separation of youthful offenders from older prisoners
