Naming Authority and Clustering Using Author Names from UVa CS Department's Technical Report Collection

    No full text
We examined naming authority and author name clustering in academic works. Specifically, we focused on a collection of reports from the University of Virginia’s Computer Science Department. Our research yielded a test list of names and a resulting file that correctly groups names referring to the same author, to the best of our knowledg

The structure and the evolution of essential patents for standards: Lessons from three IT standards

    No full text
This paper examines the structure and the evolution of the patents declared as essential for three major technical standards in information technology (MPEG2, DVD and W-CDMA). These standards have many essential patents, which are owned by many firms with different interests. Many patents have been applied even after the standard was set. We analyze three important reasons for why the essential patents are many and increase over time: they cover a number of different technology fields, there exist R&D competition even in a narrowly defined technology field and a firm can expand its patent portfolio by using continuations and other practices based on the priority dates of its earlier filed patent applications in the USA. Around 40% of the essential US patents for MPEG2 and DVD standards have been obtained by using these applications. However, our empirical analysis suggests that a firm with pioneering patents does not obtain more essential patents, using these practices.standard, essential patent, continuations

Design and implementation of Click Admin --- a web-based network research platform

    No full text
This thesis describes the design and implementation of Click Admin, a web-based network research platform. Click Admin was designed to be a robust tool for network administrators to be able to research how people would prefer to use their network when presented with different scenarios, e.g., different queueing types, different queueing priorities, individual bandwidth allocation, offered incentives for cooperative users, etc. The main goals of Click Admin are to allow network administrators to (1) gather data on how their users would prefer to use the network in any given scenario, (2) configure the flow of traffic to simulate the given scenario, and (3) monitor and analyze how users actually use the network in the given scenario. At it's core, Click Admin is merely an interface to Click Modular Router, which is a flexible, yet fast modular router toolkit allowing network administrators to reroute traffic in any number of ways. The research capabilities of Click Admin come in the form of a survey system that network administrators can use to design unique experiments and present different scenarios to users, asking them to specify how they would prefer to use the network in each scenario. After determining how each user would prefer to use the network, the Click Modular Router is then dynamically configured to simulate the given scenario. During each simulation, basic network analysis tools are used to capture the flow of traffic, for the purpose of monitoring and analyzing how users actually use the network in each scenario. With these tools, network administrators can gain insight not only into how users use the network, but how they would prefer to use the network in any number of different real-world scenarios, and can possibly even predict future trends in network usage and improve network performance.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Abdul Hassa

Life Admin When Life Turns Upside Down: A Book Review (Of Sorts)

    No full text
Prof. Elizabeth Emens is a law professor, a parent, and the author of Life Admin: How I Learned to Do Less, Do Better, and Live More - a book published in 2019. Life Admin made its way into our stack of “life improvement to-reads” (not to be confused with our stack of educational pedagogy to-reads, our parenting to-reads, our for-enjoyment to-reads, our legal education to-reads, or our political and non-fiction to-reads). As we face luxurious 10-30 minutes between Zoom classes, Zoom faculty meetings, Zoom student counseling, and Zoom parent-teacher council, we wondered in the context of a COVID Cares academic symposium: what might Life Admin have to teach us, here and now, in the midst of this chaos? This book review is generous and practical. Prof. Emens did not intend her advice to be delivered during a pandemic, but we suspect the challenges we and our caretaker colleagues in academia face right now are not new—they are simply exacerbated by the challenges of 2020. This review of Life Admin distils the book down to its most basic themes relevant to us “Super Doer” lawyer and professor types who juggle the constant mental load of service, teaching, scholarship, and parenting demands. It brings comfort in numbers and shared experience, we hope, and some tips for readers who have never been more overwhelmed by the admin of life than right now
