Ivalia Jacoby
Ivalia Jacoby (Figs 1–8) Ivalia Jacoby, 1887: 100 (type species Ivalia viridipennis Jacoby 1887 designated by Maulik (1926), type locality Sri Lanka, type in BMNH). Ancyloscelis Ogloblin, 1930: 100 –101 (type species Mniophila ruficolle Motschulsky 1866 by monotypy, type locality Sri Lanka, type probably lost). Scherer, 1969: 234 (synonymy). Amphimeloides Jacoby, 1887: 95 (type species Amphimeloides dorsalis Jacoby 1887: 96 by monotypy, type locality Sri Lanka, type in BMNH). New synonym. Taizonia Chen, 1934: 182 (type species Taizonia bella Chen 1934 by original designation, type locality Taiwan, type in DEIM). New synonym. Schereria Medvedev, 1984: 60 (type species Chabria minima Scherer 1984 by original designation, type locality Nepal, holotype in NHMB). Gruev & Askevold, 1988: 140 (synonymy). Notes on generic synonymy. Based on the study of various specimens, including type specimens of the type species, we conclude that Taizonia and Amphimeloides are junior synonyms of Ivalia. They share the following character extremely rare among flea beetles: metasternum is expanded anteriorly, becoming vertical and covering mesosternum (Fig. 5 A) so the latter also becomes vertical and sometimes invisible in ventral view. This character is shared by the types of all the type species, but varies slightly among other studied species of Ivalia. In its most developed state, the character is known to occur only in Clavicornaltica Scherer (Konstantinov & Duckett 2005), also a humicole feeder but easily distinguishable from Ivalia by its clavate antennae and other features. Other uncommon characters occuring in Ivalia and some other Oriental genera include the following: a. Metatibia curved in dorsal view with long metatibial spur (Figs 1, 3 E, F), first metatarsomere as long as or longer than two following tarsomeres combined (Figs 2 D, 3 F); b. Labrum deeply emarginated (Fig. 3 A); c. Thoracic sternites with elevated processes; d. Head with frontal ridge wide and swollen together with anterofrontal ridge in one callosity (see Figs 2 C, E, 3 A–B); e. Antennal calli poorly separated from vertex and from each other, sometimes not separated at all (Figs 2 C, E, and 3 A); f. Anterolateral callosity of pronotum very long, commonly reaching midpoint of lateral margin of pronotum (Figs 1, 2); g. Vaginal palpi of female genitalia relatively short with proximal ends fused (Fig. 4 E). Overall there are no characters to separate Ivalia, Amphimeloides, and Taizonia. As Ivalia is senior to Taizonia, Ivalia remains valid and because Amphimeloides and Ivalia were published in the same paper, we here choose Ivalia as the name to use. Diagnostic characters of Ivalia. Adult beetles small to medium sized (2–5mm), convex in lateral view. Color metallic or nonmetallic dark or light shades with spots or stripes. Antennal calli poorly to moderately developed, flat to slightly raised, anterior ends somewhat triangular, entering into interantennal space, sulci surrounding antennal calli poorly developed. Eyes small, lateral, orbit narrow, antennal sockets separated by a distance subequal to two times width of orbit or more. Frontal ridge short, wide, flat to moderately raised; anterofrontal ridge wide, flat to moderately raised. Antenna hardly reaching middle of elytron, distal antennomeres widened. Labrum deeply incised. Maxillary palp long, second and third palpomeres moderately thick, distally enlarged, last pointed. Pronotum transverse, without impressions, anterior coxal cavities open behind. Elytron with irregular punctures, posteriorly narrowed; epipleuron wide, horizontal, reaching near apex. Hind wing present or absent. Thoracic sternites with raised process in middle: prosternal intercoxal process with longitudinal vertically raised ridge along middle, process on metasternum usually circular. Metacoxa greatly enlarged, ventrally with a groove and ridge for reception of femur. Metatibia in dorsal view characteristically curved with either ends directed laterally; dorsal surface with sharp lateral margin and flat mesal margin. Tarsal claw appendiculate. Vaginal palpi joined at proximal end. Spermathecal duct not coiled. Material examined. Amphimeloides dorsalis Jacoby: Holotype. Labels: 1) Type HT; 2) Ceylon, G. Pimentelia maculata (Jacoby, 1895) comb. n. (Figs 12–14) Sermyla maculata Jacoby, 1895: 333 –334. Sermyloides unifasciata Jacoby, 1900: 257; syn. n. Type material examined. Sermyla maculata. Holotype: “ Type, H.T. / Mashonald, Salisbury / 1410 / 85 / Sermyla maculata Jac., Type / Jacoby Coll., 1909 - 28 a / AfriGa, specimen ID:, 320, specimen data, documented, IV 2004.” (BMNH; Fig. 15). Type locality: Zimbabwe, Harare, 17 ° 51 ’S / 31 °01’E. Holotype by indication “The single specimen before me …” (Jacoby, 1895). The species was described in Sermyla Chapuis, 1875, a younger homonym of Sermyla Walker, 1854 (Lepidoptera) and Sermyla Adams, 1854 (Mollusca). Sermyla maculata was transferred to Sermyloides by Jacoby (1900) in the description of the second African species. Sermyloides unifasciata. Marshall (BMNH). Diagnosis. Pimentelia maculata is easily recognizable against the only other species in this group. P. kuanduensis is only recorded from Angola and therefore is not sympatric with P. maculata (Fig. 11). Also it has more prolonged pronotum, is more slender and has on average shorter second antennomeres (pronotal length to width 0.60 in P. kuanduensis; 0.47–0.56 in P. maculata; maximal width of both elytra to length of elytron 0.63–0.79 in P. maculata, 0.56–0.61 in P. kuanduensis; length of second to third antennomere 0.56–0.62 in P. kuanduensis; 0.64–0.82 in P. maculata). Total length. 5.85–9.25 mm (mean: 7.56 mm). Head. Head reddish brown, yellowish brown or brown, rarely black, maxillary palpi brown or black. Antenna dark brown or black, only first or three to four antennomeres brown or yellowish-brown. Third antennomere in female specimens longer than second, fourth and following antennomeres conical and shorter than antennomeres of male specimens. Length of second to third antennomere 0.68–0.82 (mean: 0.77) in males, 0.64–0.75 (mean: 0.70) in females; length of third to fourth antennomere in male specimens 0.45–0.56 (mean: 0.52), in female specimens 0.52–0.63 (mean: 0.57; Fig. 14). Eyes big and rounded (Figs 12 a–e), width of eyes to eye distance 0.36–0.45 (mean: 0.41). Thorax. Pronotum trapezoidal, yellow, brownish-yellow, reddish-yellow or reddish-brown, sometimes with dark brown heart- or berry-shaped spot or entirely black (1 specimen), lightly punctuated. Pronotal width 2.15–3.50 mm (mean: 2.77 mm), pronotal length 1.10–1.90 mm (mean: 1.45 mm), pronotal length to width 0.47–0.56 (mean: 0.52). Elytra yellow or brownish-yellow, in 70 % of specimens with black sutural and elytral margins and black transverse bands around shoulder and middle of the elytra, which can rarely (2 specimen) be reduced to black spots. Elytra with deep punctuation and iridescent sheen, elytral length 4.60–7.50 mm (mean: 5.71 mm), elytral width 3.00– 5.20 mm (mean: 3.97 mm), maximal width of both elytra to length of elytron 0.63–0.79 (mean: 0.69; Fig. 12). Meso- and metathorax brownish-yellow or brown, legs yellowish-brown or brown, tarsomeres dark brown or black, length of basi-metatarsus to metatibia 0.31–0.41 (mean: 0.34). Abdomen. Brownish yellow. Male genitalia. Median lobe long and slender, in ventral view with v-shaped incision and strongly sclerotised structures beside incision, in lateral view sclerotised at apex without significant ridges. Paralell-sided and straight, orifice ovate. Median lobe with very delicate small pair of spiculae (Fig. 13). Distribution. Males. Length 6.3 –7.0 mm, width 2.9–3.4 mm. General color (Figs 127–128) yellowish brown except elytron black and opaque, tibia and tarsi darkened except base of tibia; apical margin of elytron yellowish brown. Antenna (Fig. 137) filiform and extremely slender, antennomere I not enlarged; ratio of length of antennomeres III to XI about 1.0: 1.1: 1.0: 1.1: 1.0: 1.0: 0.9: 0.8: 1.0; ratio of length to width from antennomere III to XI about 3.7: 4.2: 3.7: 4.3: 4.1: 4.4: 4.3: 4.4: 5.2. Apex of abdominal tergite VIII forming notch (Fig. 143), weakly convex at middle, with several long setae along apical margin; base weakly sclerotized. Median lobe of fifth abdominal ventrite rectangular, disc weakly depressed. Penis (Figs 139–140) slender, parallel-sided, abruptly narrowed from apical 1 / 6 to apex, apex pointed; almost straight in lateral view, curved at apical 1 / 6; tectum well sclerotized, extremely slender, apically widened, apex bifurcate; endophallus with clusters of dense stout setae, and with one longitudinal sclerite, apex weakly recurved and rounded, basally widened. Females. Length 6.7–7.5 mm, width 3.7–3.8 mm. Similar to male, but antenna shorter (Fig. 138), ratio of length of antennomeres III to XI about 1.0: 1.0: 1.0: 1.0: 1.0: 1.0: 1.0: 1.0: 1.3; ratio of length to width from antennomere III to XI about 3.5: 3.8: 3.7: 3.5: 3.3: 3.5: 3.6: 3.8: 5.6. Apical margin of abdominal ventrite V truncate. Gonocoxae (Fig. 141) slender, apex of each gonocoxa with seven or eight setae from apical 1 / 6 to apex; gonocoxae connected at middle, base widened. Ventrite VIII (Fig. 142) weakly sclerotized; apex narrow, apical margin a little emarginate at middle, surface with dense short setae inside and along apical margin, and with extremely long setae near apical margin; spiculum short. Spermathecal receptaculum (Fig. 144) a little swollen, hardly separated from pump; pump strongly curved; spermathecal duct short, stout, shallowly projecting into receptaculum. Host plant. Unknown. Remarks. Kimoto (1989) misidentified specimens of this species collected from Southeast Asia as Aulacophora opacipennis. Distribution. So far known from the north part of Sulawesi Archipelago (Gorontalo, Sulawesi Tengah and Sulawesi Utara provincies), Maluku (Bacan Isl.) and Aru Archipelago. The occurence in Aru Archipelago is somewhat questionable because this archipelago is placed far away from Sulawesi and the occurence there should be confirmed by additional material. Comments. Described from unknown number of specimens.
