Using Life Design Counseling for Career Construction to Facilitate Sustainable Employability and Decent Work in a Developing Country Context
Identifying and dealing with the adaptability needs of an unwed pregnant teenager
This article describes a way of identifying and dealing with the adaptability needs of a pregnant teenager from a life
design perspective. The participant was selected purposively from among a group of undergraduate students at an
institution for unwed mothers. The intervention involved life design counselling and occurred over a period of three
months. Data on participant adaptability needs to facilitate life design counselling were gathered using the Career
Adapt-Abilities Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, as well as qualitative techniques (including the Career
Interest Profile, a genogram, a lifeline, a collage, idioms and role models). Following the intervention, the participant
revealed heightened self-insight with regard to her personal experiences, a ‘changed’ experience in respect of certain
aspects of her context and pro-active behaviour with regard to the challenges she was facing. The process of life design
can have a positive effect on an unwed pregnant teenager.http://www.elliottfitzpatrick.com/jpa.htmlgv201
Life design counselling effects on the career adaptability of learners in a selective independent school setting
This collective case study applied life design counselling to augment the career adaptability of learners in a South African
independent school setting. Five purposively selected learners attending Grade 11 (age range: 16–18) completed eight
group-based life design counselling sessions. Data on their career adaptability pre- and post-intervention were gathered
from sessional notes. The data were thematically analysed. Following the intervention the participants displayed improved
career adaptability as evidenced by their demonstrated efforts to address aspects related to career concern, control, curiosity
and confidence. Life design counselling appeared to have a positive effect on the career adaptability of learners in an
independent school setting.http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/rpia202016-05-31hb20152024dz
The value of life design counselling for an adolescent who stutters
This study reports the results of a life design approach case study with an adolescent with stuttering. A variety of
postmodern techniques were used to engage the adolescent in life design conversations about a preferred and
meaningful future. Post-intervention, the individual seemed more capable of making a career choice with a sense of
empowerment or personal agency. Life design counselling enabled the individual to engage in meaningful career
exploration.http://www.elliottfitzpatrick.com/jpa.htmlgv201
CAREER AND SELF-CONSTRUCTION OF EMERGING ADULTS: THE VALUE OF LIFE DESIGNING
This article describes a potential way of counselling emerging adults from a life design perspective to construct a self that could enable them to be agents of both their own development and the development of others. Theoretical issues relating to a dynamic, developmental and systems framework of the understanding of wellbeing are described and the process involved is delineated. The research design was qualitative and comprised case studies. Six participants who subscribed to the definition of ‘emerging adults’ and were comparatively representative of the ethnic diversity of South Africa, were selected purposively from a group of individuals who applied for career counselling in a private practice context. The intervention involved life design counselling and occurred over a period of six weeks. Information related to participants’ self-construction was gathered using qualitative techniques, including the Career Interest Profile, the Career Construction Interview, a timeline, video clips, a collage, and semi-structured interviews. Following the intervention, the participants revealed heightened insights with regard to aspects of their sense of a relational-moral self. Results indicated that life design counselling could enhance elaborative personal development (enhancing self-awareness and reaping the benefits of developing an improved relational-moral self) and the promotion of an awareness of the importance to promote social justice in work-related contexts
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
