Emil Theodor Kocher: An innovator surgeon
Emil Theodor Kocher is considered along with Frank Lahey, Theodor Billroth, William Halsted, Charles Mayo, George Crile and Thomas Dunhill as one of the «Magnificent Seven», referring to the group of surgeons who managed thyroidectomy to make it a safe and efficient intervention that it is now practiced throughout the world. He was author of numerous contributions towards medicine. One of his most important contributions was to elucidate the function of the thyroid gland, through the observation and study of thyroidectomyzed patients, for which he was recognized by the academic and scientific community during the early twentieth century. © 2009 Universidad del Valle, Facultad de Salud

A sufficient condition for global regularity of the ∂¯-Neumann operator
AbstractA theory of global regularity of the ∂¯-Neumann operator is developed which unifies the two principal approaches to date, namely the one via compactness due to Kohn–Nirenberg [J.J. Kohn, L. Nirenberg, Non-coercive boundary value problems, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 18 (1965) 443–492] and Catlin [David Catlin, Global regularity of the ∂¯-Neumann problem, in: Y.-T. Siu (Ed.), Complex Analysis of Several Variables, in: Proc. Sympos. Pure Math., vol. 41, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 1984, pp. 39–49] and the one via plurisubharmonic defining functions and/or vector fields that commute approximately with ∂¯ due to Boas and the author [Harold P. Boas, Emil J. Straube, Sobolev estimates for the ∂¯-Neumann operator on domains in Cn admitting a defining function that is plurisubharmonic on the boundary, Math. Z. 206 (1) (1991) 81–88; Harold P. Boas, Emil J. Driving Forces of Inflation in New EU Countries (in English)
Driving forces of inflation in the eight new EU member states from Central and Eastern Europe are analyzed using the generalized dynamic-factor model (GDFM) developed by Forni et al. the impact of various macroeconomic variables on inflation is estimated by regressing the GDFM idiosyncratic component on these variables; the importance of second-round and indirect effects from energy shocks is assessed using a bivariate VAR. The author´s results suggest that, first, a significant part of inflation in the new members is driven by common factors, and, second, common component inflation is a better estimator of underlying inflation than a core inflation measure (i.e., headline inflation, excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco).generalized dynamic-factor model, idiosyncratic components, inflation
Structuring Urban Redevelopment Projects: Moving Participants Up the Learning Curve
Urban redevelopment projects implemented through public-private partnerships are the preferred way to revitalize inner-city areas. As the numbers of participants increase and deal structures become more complex, participants need more detailed knowledge of one another’s motivations and behaviors to achieve feasible redevelopment projects. This research describes the expectations and behaviors of private sources of debt and equity, especially their financial return requirements, and the actions public participants can take to reduce project risks. With this knowledge, lead public and private participants should be able to forge economically viable projects that generate greater public benefits while reducing the risks of urban redevelopment.
Emil Leon post: The contributor to the foundations of computer science from Augustów
The article is devoted to Leon Post, an outstanding mathematician and logician, the co-founder of fundamentals of theoretical computer science. The scholar from Augustów, with Jewish roots, left Poland in 1904 at the age of seven and settled with his parents in the United States. The author of the article looks at Post’s biography in a broad historical context, discussing in the first part of the text the history of Jewish settlement in Augustów and in Eastern Poland. Then he goes on to the presentation of Emil Post’s biography, showing his childhood, the controversy associated with conflicting information about the arrival of Post to America, his years of study, years of scientific work and the family situation of the scientist from Augustów. In the next part of the article, the scientific achievements of the researcher are presented. The greatest achievements of Emil Post include the creation of many-valued logic, the creation of a computational model, called today the “Post’s machine”, and the theory of μ-recursive functions, thanks to which he is now considered to be one of the founders of the theory of computing machines. Post’s work had also impact on the development of formal linguistics.KAZIMIERZ TRZĘSICKI, prof. zw. dr hab., kierownik Katedry Logiki, Informatyki i Filozofii Nauki w Instytucie Socjologii i Kognitywistyki Uniwersytetu w Białymstoku. "L'inedito". Introduction to Aldon Nielsen's seven unpublished poems
This is an Introduction to American contemporary experimental poet, Aldon L. Nielsen. Seven unpublished poems by the author are presented, together with a commentary on his compositional procedures, main themes, contents and techniques. Parallels to landscape, musical patterns, and rhythms are also touched upon in the three sections comprised in the Introduction: "Passages/Paysages", "Languagescape", " ' The music is all there' "

Fat Triangulations, Curvature and Quasiconformal Mappings
We investigate the interplay between the existence of fat triangulations, P L approximations of Lipschitz–Killing curvatures and the existence of quasiconformal mappings. In particular we prove that if there exists a quasiconformal mapping between two P L or smooth n-manifolds, then their Lipschitz–Killing curvatures are bilipschitz equivalent. An extension to the case of almost Riemannian manifolds, of a previous existence result of quasimeromorphic mappings on manifolds due to the first author is also given
