Lameness is a common symptom in horses, and there is a great need and interest for effective treatments of osteoarthritis, tendon and ligament strains in horses. We have examined biological treatments prepared from the patient’s own blood in a group of horses with a naturally occurring joint disease. The purpose was to analyze the concentration of cytokines and growth factors in the preparations. In this study, blood was drawn from 20 horses with osteoarthritis, all of which were trotters aged 2 to 7 years old. The blood was prepared in 4 different ways: 1) ‘Untreated’ blood was left in room temperature in blood vacutainer tubes for one hour before centrifugation and filtering of serum; 2) ‘Autologous conditioned serum’ (ACS) was incubated in a commercial ACS system at 37°C for 24 hours; 3) ‘Control’ blood was incubated in blood vacutainer tubes at 37°C for 24 hours; 4) PRP was prepared directly, without incubation, through a centrifugation process in a specialist syringe. ELISAs were
used to measure the concentrations of IL-1Ra, IGF-1 and TGF-b in the preparations. A Multiplex analysis was used to measure concentrations of the following analytes: IFNg, IL1- a, IL1-b, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 (p70), MCP-1, RANTES og TNFa. Results showed that IL-1Ra was present in untreated blood, and that it in fact increased in ACS. In this study, the increase was not as substantial as shown in previous studies in healthy horses. The control preparations also had a significant increase of IL-1Ra, compared to untreated serum. As shown in previous studies, our study also found that de novo synthesis of IL-1Ra happens with incubation of full blood, both when blood is incubated in serum vacutainer tubes and in special ACS systems. In PRP there was a significant increase of TGF-b compared to untreated blood. The basal level of IGF-1 in untreated serum was higher than expected in healthy horses, but there was no significant increase of IGF-1 in ACS or PRP. The Multiplex analysis had non-detectable values for most of the analytes. It is uncertain if this is caused by analytical errors or the actual condition of the samples.VE
Tematyka teodycealna w Marii Antoniego Malczewskiego
The aim of the sketch is to show the deep relation between the Weltnaschauung options in Maria (Mary, 1825) by Antoni Malczewski and the theological, philosophical and historiosophical reflection, which is a direct reaction to the last Partition of Poland. It also attempts to prove that - beside the Third Part of Dziady (Forefathers' Eve) - these options certify to continuity in realizing this subject matter between the period following the Partitions and early Romanticism. The author interprets the considerations relating to theodycea by making reference to The Book of Job and Ecclesiastes (The Book of Koheleth). Generalizing the attitudes of the biblical personages, he describes the attitudes of Polish writers and thinkers towards the tragedy of Poland's fall. In this context, the author differentiates motifs pertaining to the Weltanschauung as present in Malczewski's poem. They compose the purport of the work which goes along with the tradition of thought of theodycea up till modern theology
Shakespeare and England's Empire, 1780-1800.
This thesis is a study of Shakespeare and imperialism in England between 1780 and 1800. Chapters investigate landscape art and empire in the Boydell gallery, death and imperial subjectivity, gender and form in appropriations of Shakespeare by women artists and writers, caricatures that reference Shakespeare during these years, the use made of Shakespeare by prominent individuals to formulate their identities in the context of empire and the debates on the Quebec Bill in London’s parliament in May 1791. The thesis is primarily concerned to explore how gothic forms and representations were integrated into the history of Britain’s relationship to its empire; to assess the use of Shakespeare in academy painting and in forms such as engraving, graphic satire, relief sculpture and in writing. The study also emphasises affect: fear of imperial identities, the danger of overseas life, terror, nostalgia, affection in connection to the nation and its spaces, the increasingly imperial reach of relations with revolutionary France during these years, and pleasurable diversion in reappropriations of the plays in varying arenas
Embroidered rhetoric: the social, religious and political functions of elite women's needlework, c.1560-1630
This thesis focuses on the Elizabethan and Jacobean aristocracy and upper gentry to yield the first detailed study of the elite needleworking woman as fashioner of her social personage, and of the objects she produced as indices of social persona, religious conscience and political agency.
The first chapter explores how needlework mediates between wtiwomeann d their social context. It surveys the way in which needlework, both as practice and as object, functioned as a vehicle for projecting persona and personage into a social context which interpreted needlework according to complex value systems of personal virtue and the husbandries of conspicuous wealth. The chapter explores needlework as a site for intellectual expression. The theories developed in the first chapter are tested in a case study of Bess of Hardwick, whose textiles show her construction of a virtuous aristocratic persona proclaiming its self-assured place in the social hierarchy.
Chapter Two is the first study to consider the needlework of Elizabethan and Jacobean Catholics in the light of the Protestant proscription of iconic vestments. It recovers the history of lost needlework from English convents on the Continent, and of the English recusants' covert provision of vestments to Jesuit missioners. The first detailed case studs' of Helena Wintour's vestments reads Wintour's Jesuit-influenced Marian floral emblems and iconography alongside Hawkins's meditation handbook Partheneia Sacra to theorise Wintour's devotion to the Immaculate Conception, and explores the vestments' relationship to the liturgy and their iconographical importance to the Mass.
Chapter Three considers needlework gifts as political currency within patronage structures at the Elizabethan and Jacobean courts. Narrated with a contemporary vocabulary of grace, needlework gifts contribute to the construction of court-crown relations, symbolised by needlework gifts in Jacobean court masques. Through needlework gifts a `feminine commonwealth' availed itself of power structures at the court of James's consort that parallel his departments, and the women's political agency in a female political hierarchy is seen encoded within gifts of needlework in the Queen's Courts final masque. The case study uses Mary's needlework gifts to Elizabeth as an index of changes in their relationship. Mary's needlework joins parallel texts such as poetry, portraiture and planned masques in developing an iconographical vocabulary centring on the Judgement of Paris, with which diplomatic negotiations sought to clarify the Queens' relative positions
The Ophelia versions : representations of a dramatic type, 1600-1633
‘The Ophelia Versions: Representations of a Dramatic Type from 1600-1633’ interrogates early modern drama’s use of the Ophelia type, which is defined in reference to Hamlet’s Ophelia and the behavioural patterns she exhibits: abandonment, derangement and suicide.
Chapter one investigates Shakespeare’s Ophelia in Hamlet, finding that Ophelia is strongly identified with the ballad corpus. I argue that the popular ballad medium that Shakespeare imports into the play via Ophelia is a subversive force that contends with and destabilizes the linear trajectory of Hamlet’s revenge tragedy narrative. The alternative space of Ophelia’s ballad narrative is, however, shut down by her suicide which, I argue, is influenced by the models of classical theatre. This ending conspires with the repressive legal and social restrictions placed upon early modern unmarried women and sets up a dangerous precedent by killing off the unassimilated abandoned woman.
Chapter two argues that Shakespeare and Fletcher’s The Two Noble Kinsmen amplifies Ophelia’s folk and ballad associations in their portrayal of the Jailer’s Daughter. Her comedic marital ending is enabled by a collaborative, communal, folk-cure. The play nevertheless registers a proto-feminist awareness of the peculiar losses suffered by early modern women in marriage and this knowledge deeply troubles the Jailer’s Daughter’s happy ending.
Chapter three explores the role of Lucibella in The Tragedy of Hoffman arguing that the play is a direct response to Hamlet’s treatment of revenge and that Lucibella is caught up in an authorial project of disambiguation which attempts to return the revenge plot to its morality roots. Chapters four and five explore the narratives of Aspatia in The Maid’s Tragedy and Penthea in The Broken Heart, finding in their very conformism to the behaviours prescribed for them, both by the Ophelia type itself and by early modern society in general, a radical protest against the limitations and repressions of those roles.
This thesis is consistently invested in the competing dialectics and authorities of oral and textual mediums in these plays. The Ophelia type, perhaps because of Hamlet’s Ophelia’s identification with the ballad corpus, proves an interesting gauge of each play’s engagement with emergent notions of textual authority in the early modern period
