    Retention of Programmable Metallization Cells During Ionizing Radiation Exposure

    abstract: Non-volatile memory (NVM) has become a staple in the everyday life of consumers. NVM manifests inside cell phones, laptops, and most recently, wearable tech such as smart watches. NAND Flash has been an excellent solution to conditions requiring fast, compact NVM. Current technology nodes are nearing the physical limits of scaling, preventing flash from improving. To combat the limitations of flash and to appease consumer demand for progressively faster and denser NVM, new technologies are needed. One possible candidate for the replacement of NAND Flash is programmable metallization cells (PMC). PMC are a type of resistive memory, meaning that they do not rely on charge storage to maintain a logic state. Depending on their application, it is possible that devices containing NVM will be exposed to harsh radiation environments. As part of the process for developing a novel memory technology, it is important to characterize the effects irradiation has on the functionality of the devices. This thesis characterizes the effects that ionizing γ-ray irradiation has on the retention of the programmed resistive state of a PMC. The PMC devices tested used Ge30Se70 doped with Ag as the solid electrolyte layer and were fabricated by the thesis author in a Class 100 clean room. Individual device tiles were wire bonded into ceramic packages and tested in a biased and floating contact scenario. The first scenario presented shows that PMC devices are capable of retaining their programmed state up to the maximum exposed total ionizing dose (TID) of 3.1 Mrad(Si). In this first scenario, the contacts of the PMC devices were left floating during exposure. The second scenario tested shows that the PMC devices are capable of retaining their state until the maximum TID of 10.1 Mrad(Si) was reached. The contacts in the second scenario were biased, with a 50 mV read voltage applied to the anode contact. Analysis of the results show that Ge30Se70 PMC are ionizing radiation tolerant and can retain a programmed state to a higher TID than NAND Flash memory.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Electrical Engineering 201

    An investigation of the uses of manipulative mathematics materials with select elementary school teachers in the public schools in the District of Columbia

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which select elementary school teachers utilized manipulatives. Sex, grade level, academic degree, in-service training, and years of experience merited examination to determine their relationship to the use of manipulative mathematics materials in the teaching of mathematics.In an extensive review of the literature it was revealed that there is a paucity of data concerning the extent of the use of manipulative materials by teachers in the elementary program. An increase in awareness of the pertinent background information relative to the use of manipulative mathematics materials may assist educators in determining how best to use certain manipulative mathematics materials.The sample consisted of 36 city-wide schools with a population of 544 teachers in grades kindergarten to six. Data were collected by using a questionnaire written by the researcher. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: Part 1 concerned demographic information and Part 2 concerned availability and use of manipulative mathematics materials. Data were submitted to the analysis of the Pearson-Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Significant results were achieved when the observed values were less or equal to.05 and.01.Three research questions were advanced: There were no statistically significant relationships among sex, grade levels, academic degree, in-service training, and years of experience and the extent to which teachers utilized manipulative materials in the elementary program. There was statistically significant relationships for each of the three research questions and they were rejected at the.05 and.01 levels.It was concluded that teachers tended to use certain manipulative mathematics materials to introduce and develop mathematics concepts by sex, grade levels, academic degree, in-service training and years of teaching experience. Further, it was recommended that local school systems and teachers need to have available a variety of manipulative mathematics materials. School systems and districts should purchase manipulative mathematics materials by grade levels, curriculum needs, and learner needs, concerns, and interests.     Design, Construction, and Modeling of a 252Cf Neutron Irradiator

    abstract: Neutron production methods are an integral part of research and analysis for an array of applications. This paper examines methods of neutron production, and the advantages of constructing a radioisotopic neutron irradiator assembly using [superscript 252]Cf. Characteristic neutron behavior and cost-benefit comparative analysis between alternative modes of neutron production are also examined. The irradiator is described from initial conception to the finished design. MCNP modeling shows a total neutron flux of 3 × 10[superscript 5] n/(cm[superscript 2]·s) in the irradiation chamber for a 25 μg source. Measurements of the gamma-ray and neutron dose rates near the external surface of the irradiator assembly are 120 μGy/h and 30 μSv/h, respectively, during irradiation.     Putting the “self” in self-deprecation: When deprecating humor about minorities is acceptable

    This study tested how source knowledge affects enjoyment of self- deprecating humor about a minority group. Participants made aware that the sourc of a message poking fun at people with disabilities was himself disabled had more positive evaluations of the cartoon and author than participants un-aware of his disability. Participants initially given no source information judged the author more positively the second time when they were given follow-up source information. Finally, some effects were moderated by the disability status of the message receiver, such that having a disability or knowing someone who does predicted higher liking of the cartoons when the author is disabled but lower liking when he is not. The results suggest a role for self-deprecating humor in intergroup relations, and predict when such humor will be accepted by mi-nority and non-minority group members.Klein College of Media and CommunicationCommunication and Social Influenc
