Reprezentatywność badań reprezentatywnych. Analiza wybranych problemów metodologicznych oraz praktycznych w paradygmacie całkowitego błędu pomiaru
This monograph deals with the issue of the (non-)representativeness of research surveys and is situated within the context of methodological reflection on the quality of quantitative social research that mainly aims to identify errors related to the representativeness of a sample. The entire discussion is based on the theory of total survey error, which is widely recognized as the paradigm of quantitative research methodology. The author begins by describing the basic assumptions of this paradigm and analyzes errors that occur at different stages of the research process. The main part of this monograph focuses on four topics: (1) survey sampling frames, (2) sampling schemes, (3) errors resulting from an incomplete response rate, and (4) data weighing procedures. The main aim of this monograph was to analyze the methodological consequences of certain practical actions
The differentiation of survey procedures in cross-country comparative studies on the basis of 1537 surveys conducted in European countries in the period from 1981 to 2017
Pod uwagę wzięto pięć wiodących programów porównawczych, w tym: Eurobarometer & Candidate Countries Eurobarometer, European Quality of Life Survey, European Social Survey, European Values Study, International Social Survey Programme. This article presents differences in sampling procedures and fieldwork execution of national surveys within five major comparative cross-country projects, i.e., Eurobarometer/Candidate Countries Eurobarometer, the European Quality of Life Survey, the European Social Survey, the European Values Study and the International Social Survey Programme. The main part of the analysis is based on a dataset describing the methodology of 1537 surveys that were carried out in the period from 1981 to 2017 on representative samples of the populations of European countries. The author starts with a short overview of a cross-country project and then presents the scope of methodological archivisation of sampling and fieldwork procedures. Cross-projects and longitudinal differences in the quality of survey documentation are also explained. The main analysis describes the cross- and within-project differences in survey procedures with respect to 1) target populations, 2) sampling frames, 3) types of survey samples and sampling designs, 4) within-household selection of target persons in address-based samples, 5) fieldwork execution (e.g., length of fieldwork, modes of data collection, presence or absence of substitutions, use of advance letters and respondents’ incentives, presence of refusal conversions or back-checking procedures), and 6) fieldwork outcome rates
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Cross-Country Measurement Equivalence of Political Trust in the European Social Survey
One of the main goals of cross-cultural surveys is to compare countries on the basis of values of latent constructs. Such comparisons are only permissible, however, if the measurement process complies with cross-country equivalence. Using the data form the 7th wave of the European Social Survey, this article investigates whether the measurement of political trust is country invariant. The use of configural and metric equivalence tests demonstrate that this construct can be considered reliable and cross-country valid. However, if one applies stricter scalar equivalence test, the measurement of political trust is not fully invariant, and especially the item on trust in the legal system is posing major problems in a number of countries. This article is concluded by testing the concurrent validity of political trust scale and by offering some suggestions on how to compare European countries, even if the measurement of political trust is not fully cross-country invariant
The Effect of Using Different Types of Survey Sample on Sample Execution in the European Social Survey
Existing literature on survey methodology is not particularly saturated with studies of the relationship between the type of survey sample and the quality of their fieldwork execution. This paper focuses on three main types of probability sample, i.e., address, household and individual name sample, and examines whether limited capacity for controlling the process of within-household selection of a target respondent, that is always implemented in address and household samples, results in over-selection of easy-to-reach and cooperative respondents. Based on data from the cross-country European Social Survey project, it is demonstrated that individual name samples are associated with higher quality of fieldwork execution, while address and household samples significantly decrease fieldwork quality by over-selecting individuals more prone to staying at home and more willing to take part in a survey. It is also demonstrated that well-known survey outcome rates (such as response rate, contact rate, cooperation rate and refusal rate) are of little use in detecting fieldwork irregularities
Increase in the quality of methodological documentation of cross-national pan-European multi-wave surveys over the last 40 years - a research note
Social research methodologists have postulated that the transparency of survey procedures and data processing is mandatory for assessing the Total Survey Error. Recent analyses of data from cross-national surveys have demonstrated an increase in the quality of documentation reports over time and significant differences in documentation quality between the projects. This research note replicates previous results with an extended set of documentation-related quality indicators describing the degree of completeness of information at the consecutive steps of the survey cycle. It also extends earlier findings by indicating no significant relationship between the quality of the survey documentation and the quality of the survey itself. We analysed a meta-data set of survey characteristics, studying all available up-to-date methodological reports of 1,145 national surveys from four large-scale multi-wave projects: the European Quality of Life Survey (2003-2016), European Social Survey (2002-2018), European Values Study (1981-2017), and International Social Survey Programme (1985-2018)
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
