Robust Stability Augmentation of a Le Mans Prototype 1 race car using Incremental Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion
In this paper incremental nonlinear dynamic inversion, a sensor based approximate form of feedback linearization with favorable robustness properties, is applied to the traction control and stability augmentation problem of a Le Mans Prototype 1 race car. A cascaded side-slip and yaw-rate envelope protection system is developed in combination with a model following yaw-rate controller which acts inside the safe envelope. The vehicle is controlled through two limited slip differentials featured in the front and rear of the vehicle. A method is presented to account for load tranfer effects in the calculation of the limited control effectiveness associated the actuators . Simulations with a high-fidelity vehicle model demonstrate that the control system is robust against parameter uncertainties and is able to effectively keep the vehicle within the bounds of the safe envelope.Aerospace Engineerin
External interventions and the duration of civil wars
The authors combine an empirical model of external intervention, with a theoretical model of civil war duration. Their empirical model of intervention allows them to analyze civil war duration, using"expected"rather than"actual"external intervention as an explanatory variable in the duration model. Unlike previous studies, they find that external intervention is positively associated with the duration of civil war. They distinguish partial third-party interventions that extend the length of war, from multilateral"peace"operations, which have a mandate to restore peace without taking sides - and which typically take place at war's end, or at least when both sides have agreed to a cease-fire. In a future paper, the authors will examine whether partial third-party interventions - whatever their effect on a war's duration - increase the risk of war's recurrence. If that proves true, then even if interventions reduce the length of civil war, they may do so at the cost of further destabilizing the political system, and sowing the seeds of future rebellion.Children and Youth,Peace&Peacekeeping,Post Conflict Reconstruction,Post Conflict Reconstruction,International Affairs,Post Conflict Reconstruction,Social Conflict and Violence,Peace&Peacekeeping,Post Conflict Reconstruction,International Affairs

Strategies and genetic tools for engineering free-energy conservation in yeast
Microbial production of fuels and chemicals provides opportunities for replacing conventional production processes, which are based on chemical synthesis from non-renewable raw materials or on labour- and capital-intensive extraction from animal or plant tissues. Aeons of evolution, in which astronomical numbers of microorganisms competed for scarce resources, have optimized and streamlined the thousands of biochemical conversions in their cells for growth in specific natural environments. The resulting metabolic diversity, represented by many millions of microbial species, offers a great potential for developing novel microbial conversions of renewable substrates to products. Major advances in (recombinant) DNA technology have enabled the engineering of several microorganisms into efficient production platforms, which can be further modified for the production of a wide range of fuels and chemicals. For high-volume products based on microbial fermentation, such as transport fuels and commodity chemicals, the use of substrate can comprise up to 70% of the total product costs. These high substrate costs make a high product yield on the substrate essential for economic viability.BT/Industriele Microbiologi
Electronic structure and lattice relaxations in quantum confined Pb films
Epitaxial films that are only several atoms layers thick exhibit interesting properties associated with quantum confinement. The electrons form standing waves, just like a violin string, clamped at both ends. In ultrathin lead films, this so-called `quantum size effect' (QSE) alters the physical properties of the film (such as the resistivity, work function, or thermodynamic stability) in such a way that the even and odd numbered layers show different behavior. Films consisting of 5 or 7 atomic layers are much more stable than films consisting of 4, 6, or 8 atomic layers, for example. The results of photoemission spectroscopy measurements give a detailed insight in the energy of the electrons in the film and explain the observed stability difference between the even and odd numbered layers. Another physical quantity that is expected to depend on film thickness is the distance between the first and second atomic layers. Low Energy Electron Diffraction experiments indeed provide the first quantitative experimental analysis of atom layer relaxations induced by the quantum size effect: even numbered layers show an increase of the distance between the first and second atomic layers with respect to the odd numbered ones. By making the link between atomic and electronic structure, the findings of this thesis have interesting and important implications for the science and technology of materials and devices of nanoscale dimensions.Applied Science
Note sur les fragments de mosaïques de la donation Driant au musée de Tessé au Mans
Publication of mosaic fragments given to the Musée de Tessé at Le Mans. Almost all these fragments are identified by the author as coming from the so-called Maison de Fructus at Uthina (Oudna, Tunisia), whence P. Gauckler thought they had disappeared. Reconstruction of a scene of two Erotes fishing with a net in a sea filled with fish (n° 393 of the Inventaire des mosaïques by P. Gauckler) ; busts of two Seasons and an arbor with small vintagers (n° 396) ; traces of a design of laurel garlands. Finally, there are three disparate fragments which may come from the Byrsa Hill at Carthage (specifically, the villa Marie-Thérèse) or from another location. Brief commentary on the plan of the maison de Fructus, as well as the style and iconography of its pavements.
