19.1 A 300MHz-BW, 27-to-38dBm In-Band OIP3 sub-7GHz Receiver for 5G Local Area Base Station Applications
Recently, the so-called sub-6GHz band of the 5G new radio (NR) has been extended to 7.125GHz to address the relentless customer demand for higher data-rate communication. This demands a new design approach for the local area base-station (LA-BS) receivers (RXs) to cover a wide operating frequency range of 0.41 to 7.125GHz. Moreover, for NR bands above 3GHz, the maximum RF bandwidth (BW) is as high as 400MHz, in which a -35dBm modulated in-band (IB) blocker can be present. These impose stringent BW and IB linearity requirements for the baseband amplifiers in the LA-BS receivers. In addition to IB interferences, a -15dBm continuous-wave (CW) out-of-band (OOB) close-in blocker can also be present at 60MHz offset frequency from the passband edges, thus demanding a highly selective RX. A 4 GHz Continuous-Time ΔΣ ADC With 70dB DR and -74dBFS THD in 125MHz BW
A 4 GHz third-order continuous-time ΔΣ ADC is presented with a loop filter topology that absorbs the pole caused by the input capacitance of its 4-bit quantizer and also compensates for the excess delay caused by the quantizer's latency. The ADC was implemented in 45 nm-LP CMOS and achieves 70 dB DR and -74 dBFS THD in a 125 MHz BW, while dissipating 260 mW from 1.1/1.8 V supply. Discovery of active hydrothermal venting in Lake Taupo, New Zealand
The Horomatangi geothermal system of Lake Taupo, New Zealand, is a sub-lacustrine equivalent of subaerial
geothermal activity nearby in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). The setting of this system is rare within the TVZ as it
is directly associated with an individual volcanic feature, that of the 1.8 ka Taupo eruption vent. Two distinct
hydrothermal vent areas, named Te Hoata and Te Pupu, have been discovered during dives with the submersible
Jago. Venting of gases was seen at both sites and hot water (up to 45‡C) discharges at the Te Pupu site. Dilute water
samples have concentrations of SO4, Cl, Na and SiO2 above ambient lake water values. Gas samples have
compositions similar to other TVZ geothermal systems. Gas geothermometers indicate the existence of a hightemperature
hydrothermal environment beneath the lake with reservoir temperatures in excess of 300‡C. Chimney
structures were found at the Te Pupu site. They are up to 30 cm tall and mineralized by an ‘epithermal’ suite of
elements, including S, Hg, As, Sb and Tl. The walls of the chimneys are largely composed of diatoms and strands of
silicified filamentous bacteria embedded in an amorphous silica groundmass. Bacterial mats are commonly associated
with the gas vents and also occur at two hot springs. Close to the vents, commonly perched on top of dead chimneys
and/or exposed outcrops, are dense assemblages of what are probably a new species of sponge of the genus
Heterorotula. The sponges host a notably diversified, associated invertebrate fauna and represent a previously unseen
biomass on the lake floor. The sponges appear to have bored into the mineralized chimneys
Knickers and Bobs: An Unusual Collection of Fables, Modern Stories and Old Time Tales for Young People
This is one of the larger books in the collection, 8½ x 10½ x 1½. Of the forty-one stories here, only two are, despite the title, fables. The Tailor and the Bear on 221 has a clever tailor using fable-like means to overcome the bear and so to marry the princess. Johnnie Jones (250) is an updating of BW, in which Johnnie's mother eventually reads him the story of BW and explains to him that he has been such a cry-baby that people naturally did not think that he was hurt this time either. Most of the stories here are fairy tales heavy on magic. There is a fine colored picture of a dressed frog and a dressed mouse facing 60, but I can find no story that bears any relation to this picture!This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Zhong Qi
Pre- and postnatal bisphenol A treatment results in persistent deficits in the sexual behavior of male rats, but not female rats, in adulthood
Perinatal administration of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) reportedly inhibits the sexual behavior of sexually naïve adult male rats. In order to evaluate the effects of BPA administration during early development on later reproductive behavior, we administered one of five doses of bisphenol A daily to pregnant female rats throughout gestation and lactation, and quantified the appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors of the resultant male and female offspring over multiple sexual encounters in adulthood. Males receiving low dose perinatal BPA (50 μg/kg bw/day) showed persistent deficits in sexual behavior in adulthood. Males receiving the highest dose (5 mg/kg bw/day), however, were indistinguishable from controls with respect to consummatory sexual behaviors but showed decreased latencies to engage in those behaviors when sexually naïve, with significant non-linear, or U-shaped, dose–response relationships observed on the first and last day of testing. Adult female sexual behavior was not affected by early BPA administration at any dose tested. These results are consistent with previous reports that BPA exerts behavioral effects especially at low doses, and further indicates that BPA can cause lasting impairment of sexual behavior in males, but does not alter the normal development of female appetitive or consummatory sexual behaviors. Shared decision-making in back pain consultations: An illusion or reality?
Purpose: Amid a political agenda for patient-centred healthcare, shared decision-making is reported to substantially improve patient experience, adherence to treatment and health outcomes. However, observational studies have shown that shared decision-making is rarely implemented in practice. The purpose of this study was to measure the prevalence of shared decision-making in clinical encounters involving physiotherapists and patients with back pain. Method: Eighty outpatient encounters (comprising 40 h of data) were observed audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using the 12-item OPTION scale. The higher the score, the greater is the shared decision-making competency of the clinicians. Results: The mean OPTION score was 24.0 % (range 10.4-43.8 %). Conclusion: Shared decision-making was under-developed in the observed back pain consultations. Clinicians' strong desire to treat acted as a barrier to shared decision-making and further work should focus on when and how it can be implemented. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
A 280μW dynamic-zoom ADC with 120dB DR and 118dB SNDR in 1kHz BW
Micro-power ADCs with high linearity and dynamic range (DR) are required in several applications, such as smart sensors, biomedical imaging, and portable instrumentation. Since the signals of interest are then often small (tens of μν) and slow (<1kHz BW), such ADCs should also exhibit low offset and flicker noise. Noise-shaping SAR [1] and incremental ADCs [2] have been proposed for such applications, but their DR is limited to about 100dB. Although the ΔΣ modulator (ΔΣM) proposed in [3] achieves 136dB DR, it is at the expense of high power consumption (12.7mW). The incremental zoom ADC proposed in [4] combines a coarse SAR ADC and a fine ΔΣ ADC to efficiently achieve 119.8dB DR, but is limited to DC signals. The dynamic zoom ADC in [5] solves this problem, but requires external filtering to cope with out-of-band interference. This paper describes an interferer-robust dynamic zoom ADC that consumes 280μW while achieving 120.3dB DR and 118.1dB SNDR in 1kHz BW, resulting in a Schreier FoM of 185.8dB. It also achieves a maximum offset of 30μν and a 1/f corner of 7Hz.
