Zu Tisch in Kroton. Feinkeramik, Haushaltsware und Kochgeschirr des 4. und 3. Jh. v.

Health Hazard Evaluation Determination Report HE 79-115-650: Baumer Radiator Works: Denver, Colorado
Environmental samples to measure airborne particulates and lead (7439921), and blood samples to assess lead and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) content were taken at the Baumer Radiator Works (SIC-7539) in Denver, Colorado, on August 7, 1979. An evaluation request came from the owner and manager of the facility to determine the hazards from lead fumes and nuisance dust for an unspecified number of employees. One worker and the manager were exposed to airborne lead concentrations of 100 and 50 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. The OSHA standard for lead is 50 micrograms per cubic meter. Blood lead concentrations ranged from 29 to 65 micrograms per 100 milliliters (ml), and FEP concentrations ranged from 926 to 2,212 micrograms per liter of red blood cells. The normal range for blood lead is below 40 micrograms per 100 ml, and for FEP it is 220 to 870 micrograms per liter of red blood cells. Airborne particulate concentrations were below the OSHA standard of 15 milligrams per cubic meter. The author concludes that a health hazard due to lead exposure existed at this facility, and had existed for the past several months. Recommendations resulting from the evaluation include improvements to housekeeping and personal hygiene practices, and use of local exhaust ventilation during the soldering process. The function of simile in Remarque's "Im Westen nichts Neues"
Erich Maria Remarque's use of simile in Im Westen nichts Neues contributes greatly to the depth of the narrative and dispels the notion that this anti-war novel is nothing more than a simple soldier's account of the First World War. Definitions of simile and metaphor have existed since Aristotle. This study, however, treats simile as the literary equal of metaphor. Simile can be an even more powerful literary device than metaphor when cleverly and properly used. Remarque purposefully chose his more than 150 similes, many containing animal or nature images. Nearly all are used to show vividly and honestly war's reality while at the same time dismissing war's glory as a lie. Remarque also employs simile for antithesis. Seen through the perspective of the author, Remarque, and the narrator, Paul Baumer, the many similes represent the development Baumer undergoes up until the story's tragic end
Early growth and childhood obesity: a historical cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate to what extent prenatal, early postnatal, and late postnatal growth predicts risk of childhood obesity. METHODS: This was a historical cohort study of 1335 full term singletons born in southwest England in 1989. The main outcome measure was body mass index (BMI) at age 7. Absolute weights at birth, 6 weeks, and 18 months, and change in weights during the intervening periods were measured. Measures were examined as z scores standardised to the 1990 UK reference population. RESULTS: BMI at age 7 was positively associated with z scores for weight at all ages. Regression coefficients (95% confidence intervals) were: 0.16 (0.11 to 0.22), 0.19 (0.15 to 0.24), and 0.29 (0.26 to 0.33) for weights at birth, 6 weeks, and 18 months, respectively. Regression coefficients for birth weight, early weight gain (change in weight z score between birth and 6 weeks), and late weight gain (change in weight z score between 6 weeks and 18 months), adjusted for each other were: 0.32 (0.27 to 0.38), 0.31 (0.26 to 0.37), and 0.28 (0.23 to 0.32), respectively. There was no statistical evidence for interaction among weights, weight gains, or social deprivation. Social deprivation independently predicted BMI at age 7, the major influence being weight gain after 6 weeks of life. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that obesity risk is acquired gradually over the perinatal and postnatal periods, instead of during a prenatal or early postnatal critical window. The association of obesity risk with social circumstances and the timing of its origin offer pointers to some underlying determinants of obesity
