Koszul duality for Coxeter groups
Get PDFWe construct a “Koszul duality” equivalence relating the (diagrammatic) Hecke category attached to a Coxeter system and a given realization to the Hecke category attached to the same Coxeter system and the dual realization. This extends a construction of Beĭlinson–Ginzburg–Soergel [8] and Bezrukavnikov–Yun [9] in a geometric context, and of the first author with Achar, Makisumi and Williamson [4]. As an application, we show that the combinatorics of the “tilting perverse sheaves” considered in [6] is encoded in the combinatorics of the canonical basis of the Hecke algebra of (W,S) attached to the dual realization.Fil: Riche, Simon. Developing productive projects in rural and indigenous areas of the state of Oaxaca: Student experiences
Get PDFLa atención a las necesidades de la sociedad es una de las finalidades de la formación universitaria. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir las limitantes en el desarrollo de propuestas de proyectos productivos en zonas rurales presentadas por estudiantes de noveno semestre de una carrera de negocios, en la Universidad del Papaloapan, un análisis poco frecuente en el área de estudio. Se encontraron limitantes para identificar ideas de proyectos productivos rurales debido al tipo de formación académica de los estudiantes la cual es distinta al sector rural e indígena, aunado a un escaso interés de autoridades municipales y responsables de organismos públicos relacionados con los proyectos productivos; el poco interés se ve reflejado en la informalidad de los tiempos, incumplimiento de acuerdos y crítica a las propuestas presentadas. Se concluye que la universidad, antes de involucrar a los estudiantes en este tipo de actividades, debe habilitar a los profesores en este tema y establecer vínculos entre los diversos agentes públicos para permitir aportes estudiantiles importantes a las comunidades de origen.Meeting the demands of a society is one of the purposes of university training. The objective of this work is to describe the limitations in the development of proposals for productive projects in rural areas, presented by students of the ninth semester of a major in business at the Papaloapan University, a rare analysis in the study area. Limitations were found in identifying ideas for productive projects in rural contexts due to the students’ academic training, wich is different to rural and indigenous sector, coupled with little interest on the part of municipal authorities and heads of public agencies related to productive projects; such low interest is reflected on the lack of punctuality in the times, failure to comply with agreements, and strong criticism of the proposals presented. It is concluded that the university, before involving students in this type of activities, must train teachers in this subject and establish links between the various public agents to allow students from their business profile to make contributions to their home communities
Poetry as a performing art in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Get PDFThis thesis seeks to demonstrate that there is a direct relationship
between the emergence of poetry as a performing art in the English speaking Caribbean and phases of nationalist agitation from the uprisings
against unemployment, low pay and colonial neglect during 1937-8 to the
present. Though the poetry has many variations in scope, ranging from
light-hearted entertainment, its principal momentum has been one of
protest, nationalism and revolutionary sentiment. The thesis seeks to
relate tone, style and content both to specific periods and cultural
contexts, and to the degree of engagement of the individual artist in the
political struggle against oppression.
Frequently theatrical, the poetry has commanded a stage and a
popular audience. Though urban in style, it is rooted in older, rural
traditions. Creole, the vernacular of the masses, is a vital common
denominator. The poetry is aurally stimulating, and often highly
rhythmic. The popular music of the day has played an integral part, and
formative role in terms of composition.
The fundamental historical dynamic of the English-speaking Caribbean
has been one of violent imperialist imposition on the one hand, and
resistance by the black masses on the other. Creole language, with its
strong residuum of African grammatical constructs, concepts and
vocabulary, has been a central vehicle of resistance. It is a low-status
language in relation to the officially-endorsed Standard English. The
thesis argues that artists' assertion of Creole, and total identification
with it through their own voice, is a significant act of defiance and
patriotism.
Periods of heightened agitation in the recent past have each led to
the emergence of a distinctive form of performance poetry. Chapter two
examines the role of Louise Bennett as a mouthpiece of black pride and
nationalist sentiment largely in the period preceding independence. Her
principal aim is the affirmation of the black Jamaican's fundamental
humanity. She uses laughter both as a curative emotional release and as
an expression of mental freedom. She lays the foundations of a comic
tradition which does not fundamentally challenge the contradictions of
the post-independence period.
Chapter three relates the emergence of the Dub Poets of Jamaica to
the development of Rastafarianism into a mass post-independence
nationalist revival, and to the contribution of intellectuals, most
symbolically Walter Rodney, to the process of decolonization. Reggae
music, the principal creative response to the dynamics of the period both
in terms of lyrics and rhythmic tension, infuses the work of Michael
Smith, Cku Onuora, Mutabaruka and Erian Meeks examined in this study.
Chapter four illustrates the development of performed poetry in the
context of periods of insurrection and revolution in the East Caribbean.
It examines the Black Rower movement as a stimulus to cultural
nationalism and revolutionary sentiment, and its transcendence to
internationalism and socialism in the context of the Grenada Revolution.

La investigación sobre educación en emprendimiento y finanzas en Oaxaca: contribución de las instituciones públicas de educación superior
No full textSe reportan los resultados del campo temático Educación para la formación de emprendedores obtenidos del estado del conocimiento sobre la investigación en temas de emprendimiento efectuada en las instituciones públicas de educación superior (IPES) del estado de Oaxaca, periodo 2010-2015. Mediante una búsqueda exhaustiva y consultas de bases de datos se obtuvieron 15 trabajos sobre la temática mismos que a través de una metodología cuanti-cualitativa fueron sistematizados y analizados permitiendo dar cuenta de la situación que guarda la investigación en temas de educación en emprendimiento y educación financiera en uno de los estados del país con mayor rezago económico y educativo. Los resultados muestran la necesidad de impulsar la investigación en este campo pues sólo dos de las 34 IPES del estado lo hacen tomando como objeto de estudio el nivel de educación primaria y el universitario, siendo inexistente la investigación sobre el tema en el nivel de educación secundaria y bachillerato
Current concepts on oxidative/carbonyl stress, inflammation and epigenetics in pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Get PDFChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a global health problem. The current therapies for COPD are poorly effective and the mainstays of pharmacotherapy are bronchodilators. A better understanding of the pathobiology of COPD is critical for the development of novel therapies. In the present review, we have discussed the roles of oxidative/aldehyde stress, inflammation/immunity, and chromatin remodeling in the pathogenesis of COPD. An imbalance of oxidants/antioxidants caused by cigarette smoke and other pollutants/biomass fuels plays an important role in the pathogenesis of COPD by regulating redox-sensitive transcription factors (e.g., NF-κB), autophagy and unfolded protein response leading to chronic lung inflammatory response. Cigarette smoke also activates canonical/alternative NF-κB pathways and their upstream kinases leading to sustained inflammatory response in lungs. Recently, epigenetic regulation has been shown to be critical for the development of COPD because the expression/activity of enzymes that regulate these epigenetic modifications have been reported to be abnormal in airways of COPD patients. Hence, the significant advances made in understanding the pathophysiology of COPD as described herein will identify novel therapeutic targets for intervention in COPD
Progress in the peripheries: improvement and national image in the fictions of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, 1780 - 1830
Get PDFThis thesis examines the relationship between improvement and national image in Irish, Scottish and Welsh novels published between 1780 and 1830. Given the social, economic, and physical impacts of the agricultural and industrial revolutions in this period, the project focuses on texts that illuminate the tension between engaging with popular portrayals of picturesque landscapes, rural tradition and Celtic primitivism, and advocating or accepting the need for economic modernization that may compromise those national images. Exploring the dialogical nature of the ‘national tale’, a genre whose parameters are extended here to include regional focuses within the relevant national settings, this study contextualizes literary representations of landscape and estate management by incorporating analysis of contemporaneous non-fiction accounts found in tours and agricultural surveys.
This thesis is presented in four sections. The introduction examines the usefulness of ‘national tale’ as a genre label in current scholarly debate and explores the influence of writers such as Daniel Defoe, William Marshall and Tobias Smollett on textual representations of landscape and tourism. Chapter one focuses on English-language Welsh novels from the 1780s and 1790s, highlighting the potential ideological disconnect between sustaining a public image of Wales as a picturesque idyll and acknowledging the signs of industrialization. Chapter two explores Maria Edgeworth’s approach to antiquarianism, tradition and the travelogue in her post-Union presentations of benevolent improvement in Ireland. Chapter three examines the way writers such as Christian Isobel Johnstone and Alexander Sutherland negotiate the popular image of the Romantic Highlands while exploring the sustainability and consequences of improvement
How Survey Design Affects Inference Regarding Health Perceptions and Outcomes
Get PDFThis paper considers the role of survey design and question phrasing in evaluating the subjective health assessment responses using the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) dataset. A unique feature of this dataset is that respondents were twice asked during the survey to evaluate their health on a five-point scale, using two different sets of descriptors to define the five points, with the ordering of which set was first given determined randomly. We find no evidence to refute the assertion that the order was determined by random assignment. Yet we document differences in the response distributions between the two questions, as well as differences in inference in comparing the two populations (those that were asked one question first versus those that were asked the other). We then consider determinants of the degree of concordance between the two questions, as well as the determinants of individuals that provide conflicting responses. There appears to be evidence to suggest that individuals’ assessments of their health in response to the second question may be influenced by the battery of health questions that were asked following the first assessment. We find that information in self-assessed health responses is useful in examining health outcomes. Our results suggest that adjusting such responses to take into account framing and sequencing of questions may improve inference. In addition, we show that accounting for survey design may be important in models for predicting outcomes of interest, such as the probability of a major health event.

No full textHong Kong remains the backdrop to the science fiction movies of my youth. The city reminds me of my former training in the financial sector. It is a city in which I could have succeeded in finance, but as far as art goes it is a young city, and I am a young artist. A frustration emerges; much like the mould, the artist also had to develop new skills by killing off his former desires and manipulating technology. My new series entitled HONG KONG surface project shows a new direction in my artistic research in which my technique becomes ever simpler, reducing the traces of pixelation until objects appear almost as they were found and photographed. Skyler and Bliss presents tectonic plates based on satellite images of the Arctic. Working in a hot and humid Hong Kong where mushrooms grow ferociously, a city artificially refrigerated by climate control, this series provides a conceptual image of a imaginary typographic map for survival.
