Fernandez-Roldan, J. A., Ivanov, Y. P., & Chubykalo-Fesenko, O. (2019). Micromagnetic modelling of magnetic domain walls and domains in cylindrical nanowires. arXiv preprint arXiv:1907.02318.[EN] Magnetic cylindrical nanowires are very fascinating objects where the curved geometry allows many novel magnetic effects and a variety of non-trivial magnetic structures. Micromagnetic modelling plays an important role in revealing the magnetization distribution in magnetic nanowires, often not accessible by imaging methods with sufficient details. Here we review the magnetic properties of the shape anisotropy-dominated nanowires and the nanowires with competing shape and magnetocrystalline anisotropies, as revealed by micromagnetic modelling. We discuss the variety of magnetic walls and magnetic domains reported by micromagnetic simulations in cylindrical nanowires. The most known domain walls types are the transverse and vortex (Bloch point) domain walls and the transition between them is materials and nanowire diameter dependent. Importantly, the field or current-driven domain walls in cylindrical nanowires can achieve very high velocities. In recent simulations of nanowires with larger diameter the skyrmion tubes are also reported. In nanowires with large saturation magnetization the core of these tubes may form a helicoidal (“corkscrew”) structure. The topology of the skyrmion tubes play an important role in the pinning mechanism, discussed here on the example of FeCo modulated nanowires. Other discussed examples include the influence of antinotches (“bamboo” nanowires) on the remanent magnetization configurations for hcp Co and FeCo nanowires and Co/Ni multisegmented nanowires.Peer reviewe

The travels of the freed barbarian: questions in R. Roldan-Roldan's prose

Roldan-Roldan is the author of a literary work that encompasses short stories, poetry, novels, and dramaturgy. One of his hallmarks is the recurrence of themes related to travel: identity, foreignness, alterity, exclusion, and exile. Starting from the travel narrative genre, the novel O bárbaro liberto (Mnaloah) is taken as an object of study, to investigate how those recurrences, cross this text specifically. Divided into two chapters, this dissertation is based on theoretical works such as Jerry Harrell Bentley (2004), Mary Anne Junqueira (2011) and James Clifford (1999) to outline an overview of the origin and historical evolution of the genre. On the other hand, discussions about the characteristics and limits of the genre are based on the approaches of authors such as Sofía M. Carrizo Rueda (2008), Luis Alburquerque-García (2011), Jonathan Culler (1999) and Sandra Nitrini (1998). In addition to escaping from a conventional travel pattern, the thematic axis of Roldan-Roldan's writing is inserted in a metalinguistic and intertextual perspective. Thus, the methodology uses, comparatively, the interactions that R. Roldan-Roldan's narrative establishes with other authors, cinema, theater and music as an analysis resource that highlights the particularities of the plot, narrator, space, time and characters. The identification, encounters, and dialogues between the narrator-character and the Other, as a social, cultural, and political subject are considered from the points of view of Edward Said (2013), Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2010) and Vilém Flusser (2011) and the paradigm proposed by Hal Foster (2014): the artist as ethnographer. The central objective of the dissertation, therefore, is to describe how the narrative is constituted, to analyze and interpret what the motivations, choices and meanings are contained in Roldan's prose journeys, as well as to discuss how the author's literature debates the relationships and the encounter with the Other.Não recebi financiament

Costs and benefits of debt and debt service reduction

The author evaluates the costs and benefits of debt and debt service reduction (DDSR) from the point of view of five countries that have concluded Brady deals: Costa Rica, Mexico, the Philippines, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He concludes that, contrary to widely held views, commercial banks have probably benefited from the operations. Commercial bank participation in DDSR is voluntary, so direct financial savings to the country are probably negative at present values. The benefit from DDSR is not that debt is bought at"bargain prices"at the expense of commercial banks. It appears difficult to justify a DDSR operation on purely financial grounds. A more realistic way to look at a DDSR operation is to view it as a"project"that involves a certain financial cost. The return on such a project is how the DDSR operation improves the macroeconomy, or contributes to development. The main purpose of DDSR is to establish a more efficient arrangement between debtor countries and commercial banks, leading to improved conditions for development. A DDSR operation that does not help development is costly and should not be undertaken. The impact of DDSR on development is usually measured by the increase in the growth rate of GDP, but it is too soon to measure that for these five countries. A suitable alternative is to look at the change in investment patterns. A strong policy framework is needed if debt and debt service reduction are to significantly improve development. In Mexico and, to a lesser extent, Venezuela, improved and sustained strong adjustment policies have generated the greatest development benefits. Gains have been less in smaller countries where policies were not as supportive. The author concludes that for a country to benefit from DDSR, it needs significant indirect benefits (such as increased domestic and foreign savings). Direct benefits are likely to be negative because of the commercial banks'financial gains and because DDSR operations are frontloaded. DDSR operations cannot be justified solely by direct benefits and savings in cash flow.Strategic Debt Management,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Financial Intermediation
