    No full text
The story of Timko Export Management Company offers a number of lessons to international entrepreneurs. This case would best be used in an international entrepreneurship class or a strategic management class at the junior or senior level. It should take about three hours of class time and a bit more time outside of class in preparation

Benchmarking the Beam Longitudinal Dynamics Code BLOND

    No full text
The relatively recent Beam Longitudinal Dynamics code BLonD has already been applied to a wide range of studies for all present CERN synchrotrons. Its application area ranges from studies of RF manipulations, over single and multi-bunch interactions with impedance, to the action of feedback loops and RF noise. In this paper, we present benchmarks and comparisons with measurements, theory, or other codes, which have increased greatly the trust in the code. Tests related to bunch-to-bucket transfer, feedback loops, diffusion due to noise injection, as well as collective effects, are presented

Effect of probiotics on the fecal microflora after radiotherapy: A pilot study

    No full text
Background and Aim : The development of gastrointestinal symptoms following pelvic radiotherapy depends on morphological and functional modifications of the intestinal epithelium after radiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of preventive administration of the preparation ′′5′′ Strain Dophilus and Hylak on the fecal microflora after radiotherapy in patients during radiotherapy. Materials and Methods : Fourteen patients were randomly selected and subdivided into two groups: The first group was administered ′′5′′ Strain Dophilus (L Group) and the second group was administered Hylak (H Group). Radiation was delivered by a Cobalt 60 unit by using the four field box technique. The doses were divided into 2 Gy per day over 5 to 7 weeks to give the total cumulative dose of 50 Gy (2 Gy/day). High risk patients (e.g., patients with prostate cancer), received dosage 65 67 Gy (2 Gy/day). Results : Both experimental and clinical studies have shown that probiotics can effectively modulate intestinal inflammation by altering the composition and the metabolic and functional properties of gut indigenous flora. Conclusions : Many bacteria were found to be sensitive to irradiation. It would be necessary to check the possible effects of cytostatics on bacteria in larger studies

Nitrogen dioxide calibration standards for portable monitors

"Mine operators and Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors use portable gas monitors in underground mines to measure worker exposure to various gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Even in relatively small concentrations, NO2 can produce harmful side effects in underground workers. Mines using equipment powered by diesel engines, carrying out explosive blasting operations, and performing extensive arc welding and/or cutting work will have measurable quantities of NO2 released by these processes. Workers in these areas often use gas monitors to warn of excessive gas concentrations and to help them determine when to increase ventilation air that will dilute these gases, thus minimizing exposures to this gas. Portable gas monitors, used to measure NO2 levels, must be calibrated before each use. Calibration is typically performed using a small portable pressurized cylinder containing a certified gas mixture. The certified NO2 standard mixture, usually 10 ppm NO2 concentration, is diluted with either air or nitrogen gas. To determine the stability of commercially available portable gas standards, two different cylinders containing NO2 in nominal 10-ppm concentrations were examined. One cylinder was diluted in air, the other, in nitrogen. Baseline NO2 mixtures were generated using a standard liquid NO2 permeation tube operated at a constant temperature. Final dilutions of the test gas mixtures were made with air or with nitrogen using a mass flow-controlled gas dilution system. This study showed that, when a permeation-type NO2 generator is used, the electrochemical sensors in portable NO2 monitors provide identical results for gas mixtures whether they are diluted with air or with nitrogen. Two different gas monitors, one with a two-electrode sensor and one with a three-electrode sensor, were used to measure gas concentrations in the two commercially available cylinders. One month after the cylinders were delivered, the NO2-in-nitrogen cylinder, stated to contain 10 ppm NO2, measured 8.13 ppm. The NO2-in-air cylinder, also stated to hold 10 ppm NO2, measured 6.88 ppm. Therefore, before using NO2 gas cylinders to calibrate monitors, it is recommended that their concentrations be verified either by manufacturer recertification or by comparing the stated cylinder gas concentrations to a laboratory-based permeation tube-generated standard. The relationship of sex and sexual orientation to self-esteem, body shape satisfaction, and eating disorder symptomatology

    No full text
There is increasing interest in understanding what role, if any, sex and sexual orientation play in body dissatisfaction, its correlates to distress, and its relationship to disordered eating. The goals of the present study were to examine: (a) differences in sex and sexual orientation in internalization of societal pressure to modify physical appearance, components of body image dissatisfaction, self-esteem, and eating disorder symptomatology and (b) whether the internalization-eating disorder symptomatology was mediated by the different components of body image dissatisfaction and low self-esteem. The present data support several key trends in the literature: men generally reported less body dissatisfaction, internalization of socio-cultural standards of beauty, drive for thinness, and disordered eating, but a greater drive for muscularity than women; results also indicated that different components of body image dissatisfaction and low self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between internalization and eating disorder symptomatology. Gay men reported significantly more body dissatisfaction, internalization, eating disorder symptomatology, drive for thinness, and drive for muscularity than heterosexual men. Compared to heterosexual women, lesbians reported increased drive for muscularity, lower self-esteem, and lower internalization; however, they did not significantly differ on body dissatisfaction, drive for thinness or disordered eating. Correlation coefficients between body shape dissatisfaction and several aspects of mental distress were significantly larger for gay men than heterosexual men; the same coefficients did not differ between lesbian women and heterosexual women. Results of path analyses indicated that the relationship between internalization and disordered eating differs f

DNA sequence of the araBAD-araC controlling region in Salmonella typhimurium LT2

    No full text
The araB and araC genes of Salmonella typhimurium have been cloned onto the plasmid pBR322. Restriction analysis and subcloning of restriction fragments localized these genes to a 4.4 kb DNA fragment. Complementation analysis revealed that the cloned araB and araC genes from S. typhimurium complemented araB and araC mutant strains of escherichia coli. Conversely, cloned araB and araC genes from E. coli complemented araB and araC mutant strains of Escherichia coli. Conversely, cloned araB and araC genes from E. coli complemented araB and ara C mutant strains of S. typhimurium. The DNA sequence was determined for the S. typhimurium araB and araC controlling region and for the initially translated portions of these genes. The nucleotide sequence of the araB promoter was 87% homologous with the same region in E. coli and contained no deletions or insertions relative to the E. coli sequence. The presumed AUG codon corresponding to the amino terminus of the S. typhimurium araC protein was in the same location as in E. coli. There was, however, considerable divergence for the E. coli sequence preceding the translation start site. The nucleotide sequence of the initial 237 bp in the open reading frame of the S. typhimurium araC gene was 78% homologous with the same sequence in E. coli. By comparison, the amino acid sequence for this region was 91% conserved

Disordered eating, drive for thinness, and body dissatisfaction in gay men

Although there is a traditional assumption that body dissatisfaction is mainly isolated to women, we now know that is not the case. Emerging evidence suggests that men have equal levels of body dissatisfaction, but for different reasons: while women tend to want to reduce body mass, men generally prefer to increase their muscularity, particularly in their chest and arms. Early research on eating disorders and body dissatisfaction in men focused on ways in which homosexual men were similar to women in body dissatisfaction and eating pathology, leading to an assumption that homosexual men were at greater risk for eating- and body-related pathology. Extant research indicates that homosexual men are more likely to desire a thinner body, and engage in disordered eating behavior than heterosexual men; however, this has not been fully explored. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not homosexual men differed from heterosexual men primarily in their levels of drive for thinness and muscularity. Women (both homosexual and heterosexual) were included for comparison. Participants completed the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ), Drive for Thinness (DFT), Drive for Muscularity (DFM), and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT). Differences between groups were assessed with a series of Mann-Whitney U Tests. The results suggest that, compared to men, women reported higher dissatisfaction with their body shape (p.8), DFT (p>.5), or EAT (p>.2); heterosexual women reported higher SATAQ scores (p=.004) while homosexual women reported higher DFM scores (p=.004). Consistent with previous research, these data suggest that sexual orientation may be a risk factor for body dissatisfaction and eating disturbances for men, but less so for women. It is unclear, however, what role measurement bias may play in these findings as these questionnaires are typically geared to women and feminine physiques. Future research would do well to address the causes and validity of this inequality, and how it may be addressed in a clinical setting. Moreover, clinicians should be aware of, and sensitive to, body dissatisfaction and disorder
