Structural changes of synthetic paulingite (Na,H-ECR-18) upon dehydration and CO2 adsorption
Get PDFFunding: EPSRCThe structure of dehydrated calcined ECR-18, synthetic paulingite, topology type PAU, unit cell composition Na132H28Si512Al160O1344, has been determined by Rietveld refinement against synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. Upon dehydration the symmetry of Na,H-ECR-18 changes from Im3m to I 43m, with a corresponding decrease of cubic unit cell a parameter from 34.89412(1) A to 33.3488(3) A. This occurs as the framework distorts to afford closer coordination of Na+ cations by framework O atoms in 8-ring window sites of the seven cage types present. Na+ cations in 8R sites block the access of N2 molecules to the internal pore space at 77 K but CO2 adsorption at 308 K is observed, and is postulated to occur via a 'trapdoor' mechanism. In situ PXRD during CO2 adsorption at pressures up to 10 bar show reversible broadening of diffraction peaks that is attributed to local crystallographic strain.Peer reviewe
Dancing with delusion: an analysis of Alex Da Cortes immersive installations
No full textOver the last decade, Alex Da Corte has become known for creating immersive installations that transform galleries into dreamlike environments by integrating paintings, sculptures, and videos with lighting, flooring, sounds, and smells. Da Cortes installations are densely populated with readymade objects and consumer images that superficially reference the commodity culture of the immediate past and upon further inspection provide poetic insight into the human condition. Da Corte brings together objects that, while from a variety of sources, share a common history of use and disuse. In doing so, his assemblages take into account the shifting and fleeting status of desire in a digital era and the troubling oscillation between intimacy and distance that characterizes our encounters with objects as well as with one another. In this thesis, I will analyze how Da Cortes ongoing series of installations made in response to Arthur Rimbauds 1873 prose poem, A Season in Hell, slow down the immediate representational gratification we have become accustomed to in the digital era by activating the viewer emotionally in an immersive, virtual environment. In this context, I use the term virtual in opposition to the real, to refer to representation that can be either simulacral or directly mimetic
Assessing the quality of maternal health care in Indigenous primary care services
No full textLetter to the EditorImproving access to appropriate, good‐quality care in the antenatal and postnatal period is a key part of closing the acknowledged gap between Indigenous and other Australians in perinatal outcomes. Previous research in a large Aboriginal medical service in Queensland demonstrated sustained improvements in perinatal outcomes associated with a quality improvement approach.
