Main and Interactive Effects of Diabetes Distress and Stress from Life Events on Overall Psychological Distress
No full textThis study sought to extend previous research by examining rates of three different types of diabetes distress, and whether stress from life events amplified the association between diabetes distress and overall psychological distress in a community-based sample of 119 middle-aged and older adults with type 2 diabetes. Consistent with past research, individuals experienced a moderate level of diabetes distress. However, only some types of diabetes distress were associated with depressive symptoms, independent of stressful life events, whereas all types of diabetes distress were only related to anxious symptoms when stress from life events was also high.This has not been published yet (just accepted). Evaluation of a newly discovered water suppression pulse sequence for high-field in vivo 1H surface coil NMR spectroscopy.
No full textThe use of a water-suppressing spin-echo pulse sequence reported recently (V. Sklenar and A. Bax, J. Magn. Reson. 74, 469 (1987); M. von Kienlin, M. DeCorps, J. P. Albrand, M. F. Foray, and P. Blondet, J. Magn. Reson. 76, 169 (1987)) was evaluated for in vivo brain proton surface coil NMR spectroscopy. The studies were performed on cat brain using surface coils at 4.7 T. The sequence produced brain spectra with adequate water suppression, and a broader excitation profile than sequences which form spin echoes using 1331 pulses (P. J. Hore, J. Magn. Reson. 54, 539 (1983); H. P. Hetherington, M. J. Avison, and R. G. Shulman, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82, 3115 (1985)). The phase artifacts were smaller than those produced in 1331 methods, but theoretical analysis showed they should not be completely absent. The effectiveness of lengthening the spin-echo delay in the new sequence for suppression of unwanted lipid resonances was demonstrated. The sequence was shown to be capable of detecting lactate formation and clearance in a global cerebral ischemia experiment
Diffusion MRI in patients with transient ischemic attacks.
No full textDiffusion MRI has established value in patients with ischemic stroke but has not been systematically investigated in patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA).Clinical, conventional MRI, and diffusion MRI data were collected on 42 consecutive patients with symptoms of cerebral TIA. TIA imaging data were compared with those from a contemporaneous group of 23 completed stroke patients.Twenty of the 42 TIA patients (48\%) demonstrated neuroanatomically relevant focal abnormalities on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) imaging. When present, DWI/ADC signal changes in TIA patients were less pronounced and smaller in volume than those in completed stroke patients. TIA symptom duration was significantly longer for DWI-positive than for DWI-negative patients, 7.3 versus 3.2 hours. Diffusion MRI information changed the suspected anatomic and vascular TIA localization and the suspected etiologic mechanism in over one third of patients with diffusion MRI abnormalities. Of the 20 TIA patients with identifiable lesions on diffusion MRI, 9 had follow-up imaging studies; of these, 4 did not show a relevant infarct on follow-up imaging.Diffusion MRI demonstrates ischemic abnormalities in nearly half of clinically defined TIA patients. The percentage of patients with a DWI lesion increases with increasing total symptom duration. In nearly half, the diffusion MRI changes may be fully reversible, while in the remainder the diffusion MRI findings herald the development of a parenchymal infarct despite transient clinical symptoms. Finally, diffusion imaging results have significant clinical utility, frequently changing the presumed localization and etiologic mechanism
The campaign for democratic socialism 1960-1964.
No full textPhDIn early 1960 it seemed likely that the official Labour
Party defence policy would be defeated by a unilateralist
resolution at the Scarborough Conference. In response to
this possibility the Campaign for Democratic Socialism,
or CDS, was established.
The CDS projected the image of a grass-roots movement
inspired by Gaitskell's "fight and fight again" speech.
But it was run by a Campaign Committee which included
leading members of the Party like Tony Crosland, Roy
Jenkins and Patrick Gordon Walker, as well as less well
known members like Bill Rodgers, Dick Taverne, Philip
Williams, Brian Walden, Denis Howell and David Marquand.
This highly talented group launched an elaborate and
successful lobbying, publicity and briefing operation
which was influential in overturning the unilateralist
vote at the Blackpool Conference of 1961. After Blackpool
the Campaign helped many of its leading members find
seats in the House of Commons while continuing to put the
"revisionist" case through its newspaper Campaign.
The importance of the CDS in the history of the Labour
Party is, primarily, as the first internal pressure group
organised by the right of the Party. It was also the
first internal Party group to use such sophisticated
lobbying techniques. Moreover, the subsequent careers of
the leading members of the Campaign influenced the
development of the Labour Party. The CDS was an important
formative political action for many of them. Finally many
of the CDS supporters set-up or joined the SDP when it
was launched

Housing supply in Algeria: affordability matters rather than availability
No full textThis paper analyses the performance of the housing supply sector in Algeria. The country is witnessing a high rate of urbanization, and a fast growing labor force. The effects of housing policy on labor market, and ultimately economic growth are important. Similarly, policies that cause housing costs to rise significantly can have a much greater effect on the poor than does, for instance, a relatively small housing subsidy program. Accordingly, the scope of the research expanded to consider these broader issues, even if the focus continued to remain on how policies could be designed to improve the situation of the poor. After the introduction, the structure of the paper discusses briefly the methodology used. Then it presents the housing situation, policies and practices, followed by the dynamics of the housing sector. The main findings of the study, low levels of affordability and related problems are presented.
