Description and validation of hydraulic performance and their environmental impacts on sewer systems

    No full text
The functionality of municipal infrastructures is a primary determinant of the ecological, economic and social conditions of a city. The urban wastewater system (sewer network) provides an example of such an infrastructure. High sewer network reliability is an important and mandatory requirement that must be satisfied under field conditions. The reliability of a system is a measure of the probability that the system is functional through some entire period of time. A buried sewer pipe is subject to a large number of influences difficult to predict in advance, since they are random and characterized by significant variability. These factors adversely affect sewer network reliability

WaterMet2: a tool for integrated analysis of sustainability-based performance of urban water systems

    No full text
This paper presents the "WaterMet2" model for long-term assessment of urban water system (UWS) performance which will be used for strategic planning of the integrated UWS. WaterMet2 quantifies the principal water-related flows and other metabolism-based fluxes in the UWS such as materials, chemicals, energy and greenhouse gas emissions. The suggested model is demonstrated through sustainability-based assessment of an integrated real-life UWS for a daily time-step over a 30-year planning horizon. The integrated UWS modelled by WaterMet2 includes both water supply and wastewater systems. Given a rapid population growth, WaterMet2 calculates six quantitative sustainability-based indicators of the UWS. The result of the water supply reliability (94%) shows the need for appropriate intervention options over the planning horizon. Five intervention strategies are analysed in WaterMet2 and their quantified performance is compared with respect to the criteria. Multi-criteria decision analysis is then used to rank the intervention strategies based on different weights from the involved stakeholders' perspectives. The results demonstrate that the best and robust strategies are those which improve the performance of both water supply and wastewater systems

Self-assembly of noble metal monolayers on transition metal carbide nanoparticle catalysts

    No full text
We demonstrated the self-assembly of transition metal carbide nanoparticles coated with atomically thin noble metal monolayers by carburizing mixtures of noble metal salts and transition metal oxides encapsulated in removable silica templates. This approach allows for control of the final core-shell architecture, including particle size, monolayer coverage, and heterometallic composition. Carbon-supported Ti[subscript 0.1]W[subscript 0.9]C nanoparticles coated with Pt or bimetallic PtRu monolayers exhibited enhanced resistance to sintering and CO poisoning, achieving an order of magnitude increase in specific activity over commercial catalysts for methanol electrooxidation after 10,000 cycles. These core-shell materials provide a new direction to reduce the loading, enhance the activity, and increase the stability of noble metal catalysts.United States. Dept. of Energy. Umelecký preklad ako osobitný druh jazykovej a interkultúrnej komunikácie

    No full text
V prvej časti príspevku stručne charakterizujeme román srbského spisovateľa Milorada Pavića Drugo telo. V jeho druhej časti konfrontujeme srbský originál so slovenským prekladom Karola Chmela. Na základe ich analýzy konštatujeme, že preklad umeleckých textov nepozostáva iba z výmeny lingvistických prostriedkov medzi dvoma jazykovými systémami, ale ide o zložitý proces založený predovšetkým na všestrannej erudícii prekladateľa. Hoci genetická príbuznosť srbčiny a slovenčiny uľahčuje ich obojstrannú zrozumiteľnosť, bez potrebnej jazykovej prípravy nezaručuje mechanicky ich bezproblémovú preložiteľnosť.In the first part of the article we briefly introduce a novel written by Serbian author Milorad Pavić called Drugo telo. In the second part the Serbian original version is compared to its Slovak translation by Karol Chmel. Based on the analysis we observe that translation of a literary text does not consist only of the exchange of linguistic tools between two language systems, but it is a very complicated process based especially on the general erudition of the translator, too. Even though the genetic relation of the Serbian and Slovak languages makes their mutual understanding easier, an automatic translatability is not guaranteed without the necessary linguistic preparation.V prvej časti príspevku stručne charakterizujeme román srbského spisovateľa Milorada Pavića Drugo telo. Jezička građa ukazuje na to da u lingvističkom smislu postoji kontinuum između emocija, motivacije i raspoloženja, te da pridevi koji ih označavaju čine skup nejasnih granica...This thesis is aimed at exploring adjectives denoting emotions in English and Serbian from a cognitivelinguistic point of view. The first goal of the thesis was to determine the structure of the category of adjectives denoting emotions in the two languages, with focus on the prototypical members and the position of other members of the lexical set in the whole category. The second goal of the research was to compare and contrast the conceptualization of emotions as represented in this class of words. The research was based on the data from the corpus, dictionaries and thesauri, and included 732 English adjectives and 418 Serbian adjectives denoting emotions. Also, the thesis comprises results obtained through a survey conducted among 120 native speakers of English and Serbian. The results of the survey show that the central members of the category of adjectives denoting emotions are the adjectives E happy and S srećan (“happy”). The boundaries of the category are fuzzy as it also includes the adjectives denoting personalizy traits. The paper deals with adjectives denoting prototypical emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger and fear, but also other emotional states such as calmness, interest, attraction, desire, empathy, love, pride, gratitude, shame etc. From the linguistic point of view it is noticable that there is a continuum between emotions, motivational states and mood, and the adjectives denoting them form a set with fuzzy boundaries..
