Measurement of J ψ and ψ production in 800 GeV/c proton-gold collisions

No full text
With a data sample containing 1.1×105 J/+- decays reconstructed with 16 MeV/c2 rms mass resolution, we have measured the differential cross sections versus Feynman-x, rapidity, and pT for the production of J/ and in 800 GeV/c p-Au collisions. Our results are compared with leading-order QCD predictions and with previous measurements. While the shapes of the cross sections are in qualitative agreement with QCD predictions, the magnitudes disagree by factors of 7 (J/) and 25 (). Assuming an appropriate form for the differential cross sections in regions not measured we derive a total J/ production cross section (p+NJ/+X)=442288 nb/nucleon and a (model-dependent) total cross secton (p+N+X)=75522 nb/nucleon. For J/ produced at central rapidity, d(p+NJ/+X)/dyy=0=230546 nb/nucleon.</p

Nuclear dependence of J/ψ production by 800 GeV/c protons near xF=0

No full text
The nuclear dependence for 800 GeV/c proton production of J/ψ's has been measured near xF=0. $J/ psi-'s produced from beryllium, carbon, and tungsten targets were detected with the Fermilab E789 pair spectrometer. These data extend the results from E772 down to the range xF=-0.1 to 0.1 and indicate a gradually increasing suppression as xF falls below zero.</p

Production of J/ψ at large xF in 800 GeV/c p-copper and p-beryllium collisions

No full text
The differential cross sections dσ/dxF for J/ψ produced inclusively in 800 GeV/c p-Cu and p-Be collisions have been measured in the kinematic range 0.30≤xF≤0.95 through the decay mode J/ψ→μ+μ-. They are compared with the predictions of the semilocal duality model for several sets of parton density functions. No evidence for a suggested intrinsic charm contribution to the cross section is observed. The ratio of the differential cross sections for Cu and Be targets confirms the suppression of J/ψ production in heavy nuclei at large xF.</p

Inclusive J, ψ\psi' and χc\chi_c Production in Hadronic Z Decays

No full text
We report on measurements of the inclusive production of J, ψ\psi' and χc\mathrm{\chi_c} mesons in hadronic Z decays, based on 3.2 million hadronic events collected using the L3 detector at LEP. The J and ψ\psi' mesons are reconstructed through their decays into lepton pairs, while the χc\mathrm{\chi_c} mesons are reconstructed via the decay mode χcJ+γ \mathrm{\chi_c} \rightarrow \mathrm{J} + \gamma . The measured branching fractions are: \begin{eqnarray*} \mathrm{Br(Z \rightarrow J + X)} &=& (3.40 \pm 0.23\:(\mathrm {stat.}) \pm 0.27\:(\mathrm {sys.}))\,\times\,10^{-3} \\ \mathrm{Br(Z \rightarrow \psi' + X)} &=& (1.6 \pm 0.5\:(\mathrm {stat.}) \pm 0.3\:(\mathrm {sys.}))\,\times\,10^{-3} \\ \mathrm{Br(Z \rightarrow \chi_{c1} + X)} &=& (2.7 \pm 0.6\:(\mathrm {stat.})\pm 0.5\:(\mathrm {sys.}))\, \times\,10^{-3}. \\ \end{eqnarray*} In the absence of a clear χc2\mathrm{\chi_{c2}} signal, the upper limit at 90\% C.L. is set: \mathrm{ Br(Z \rightarrow \chi_{c2} + X) 3.2\,\times\,10^{-3}}. \end{document

Search for Exclusive B Decays to J and η\eta or π0\pi^{0} with the L3 Detector

No full text
A search for exclusive decays of \ensuremath{\mathrm{B_d^0}} and \ensuremath{\mathrm{B_s^0}} mesons has been performed in the channels \ensuremath{\mathrm{B_d^0}\rightarrow\mathrm{J}\eta},\,\, \ensuremath{\mathrm{B_s^0}\rightarrow\mathrm{J}\eta},\,\, \ensuremath{\mathrm{B_d^0}\rightarrow\mathrm{J}\pi^0} and \ensuremath{\mathrm{B_s^0}\rightarrow\mathrm{J}\pi^0}. The data sample consisted of more than three and half million hadronic \ensuremath{\mathrm {Z}} decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 through 1995. No candidate events have been observed for any of the modes thus determining upper limits at 90\% confidence level: 3.2×1043.2\times 10^{-4} on \mathrm{Br}(\ensuremath{\mathrm{B_d^0}\ rightarrow\mathrm{J}\pi^0)} and the first experimental limits: \begin{eqnarray*} \mathrm{Br}(\ensuremath{\mathrm{B_d^0}\rightarrow \mathrm{J}\eta}) & < & 1.2\times 10^{-3},\\ \mathrm{Br}(\ensuremath{\m athrm{B_s^0}\rightarrow\mathrm{J}\eta}) & < & 3.8\times 10^{-3},\\ \mathrm{Br}(\ensuremath{\mathrm{B_s^0}\rightarrow\mathrm {J}\pi^0}) & < & 1.2\times 10^{-3}.\\ \end{eqnarray*
